hey,
just moved over from the Gold Coast, QLD and start work next week in Newmarket for potentially 6 months (1 month trial though)
still early days but already missing riding,
only 3 months into my RE back home (lams up to 650cc) and can upgrade after the 12 months.
wondering with my current RE Australian license, will I still be restricted to 650cc here, not that i want anything over 500 as my bike in Oz was a Honda VTR250.
seen a few older Suzuki Bandits on Trademe for around $2000-
but would need to work at least a month before being able to buy one.
so maybe could hire a bike for the first month, either from someone on this site who has an older bike not in use that they might want some weekly income from or go to a hire place...
i read about the buyback option thingy but not really keen. too much of a loss.
i will ride rain, hail though rather shine.
i would still need to buy gear as well rainy gear i suppose, some more costs to add in...
im 5'9, 71kg, average build, medium helmet head.
former www.netrider.net.au but thought would join the kiwis since in NZ.
any tips, advice would be great.

Suggest if you are used to a 250, that you stick to 250-599cc since the power increase takes a bit of getting used to. Around Auckland traffic, even a 250 is probably ample for your requirements anyway. Plus the registration/ACC and insurance charges escalate over 600cc.
You can get second hand gear from Trademe, but best to buy a new helmet rather than used. You can find new helmets on Trademe too.
Make sure you also have a read through the NZ Road Code to understand the unique NZ rules - turning left, and uncontrolled intersections - which many Kiwis don't understand after 30+ years, and which are thankfully due to change next year!

yea, after finding out about the 50kph limit does make it wises to use smaller bike.
not too small though as would love to hit h'way speeds with ease for the Saturday ride etc.
400cc seems a happy medium though.

It's worth going along to a local motorcycle training school for a defensive riding course, and for tips on NZ riding. That may also help you to find local motorcycle enthusiasts for group rides.
400cc is a good medium size, and not too heavy for manoeuvring through Auckland traffic.
Ride safe!

yea, never done a lot of wet weather riding back home, maybe 2 wet rides.
soo, defensive riding course could be option fa shiz
400cc would be optimum, but would still be hippy with a 250cc again.

Welcome :)
I would think that on a restricted licence you will be subject to our restricted scheme which is currently limited to 250cc. However there are plans to adopt the LAMS model sometime soon. It was going to be July 1st I think, but I haven't read up on it lately.
Best check with the NZTA (http://www.nzta.govt.nz/) for a start.
Have fun :2thumbsup
