I always thought that it would be at the end of the year. So it would be just enough time for me to get my full and not have to worry about all this stuff.

Only thing i have seen so far is that the learner age is going to 16 from 15 as of August, nothing about changes to anything else.

Searched high and low, called NZTA, and everything else. Does anyone know when the laws regarding Power to Weight Ratio's are coming in? Legitimately? I hear the goverment decided on it sometime last year, but have spent the last year doing what they do best, F-all, except bickering on live-online tv like kids about what their favourite colour is and whether May has 29 or 31 days.

I know this seems 'slightly' on the aggressive side but its infuriating as I have my heart set on a MC19 that is very so much within reach, but no point getting it if the new laws come in close. Any and all feedback welcome.

What "new learner laws"? There's been submissions and discussion, but no laws have been passed. I get at least three people a day telling me they're "just going to wait and buy a 650 when the new law starts" but no one can actually point me to where it's been agreed on and when it will come in to place.

They are putting in new "harder" restricted tests from February for the newbies getting learners from August. That's all I've heard so far.

I'd be very surprised if anything was passed before the start of next year...

I know the learner rules are changing. I was querying the new weight to power ratio law for bikes. Not sure if that will be in place at the same time or not...

i've been searching for some info on the subject as well and i came across to that:

http://www.nzta.govt.nz/consultation/driver-licensing-amendment-2011/q-and-a.html

i first though that it would come in to effect in august together with the raise of minimum age but it seems that the power to weight ratio won't come in to effect before feb next year...

anyway, the power to weight ratio stuff will more likely to be similar to the australia LAMS list. we currently dont have many of the bigger bikes available here on the nz market - usually they are special models, tuned (de-tuned?) to comply with the regulations.

pretty hard to pinpoint when at this stage and i wouldn't be holding my breath.

pretty obvious thou, if you can get your restricted/full do it asap.

cheers,
Ricardo

Really? As far as I can tell the bill covering licensing age (15 to 16) etc passed but the amendment rule that relates to motorcycle license conditions has yet to be signed off...

AS I understand ...

The changes so far, means the LTSA require NO other law change ... to change the licence conditions ... it is now at their descretion when they do so ...

By 2020 ... the goverment .... in an attempt to reduce unemployment ... will have lowered the retirement age to 35 ...
