I'm running the Taupo half marathon in one piece motorcycle leathers to rasie money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of NZ and to raise the profile of "Nearly There".

The event is on the 7th of August. Please check out the Nearly There link in my sig for details on how you can show your support.

Cheers!
Allan Ure.

I always knew you were completely mental.

Make sure you burn those leathers when you finish. They'll have so much salt in them the flames should be a pretty blue colour.

Good on you.

The chafing!
Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.

I've walked a couple of halves and that was bad enough...

lycra bike pants should stop any chafing.... my brother used to do a lot of cycling and always wore lycra bike pants under his "normal" shorts. The lycra doesn't chafe and no one will see it :(

Yeah, keeping cool is going to be the hardest part. Looking at having new ice packs at least 3 or 4 times during the run (shuffle). Will be wearing a 3l camel pack too. I'm really looking forward to the event, it's going to be heaps of fun!

Planning the next stunt, twill be a half or full marathon distance.
So far the possibilities are:
Run the event with a ball and chain (proper heavy one)
Run backwards
Wear some other costume... a bear suit or something?
Skip instead of run
Piggy back someone the whole way

Your ideas welcomed!

Well done Mr Fruity!!! :woohoo: What a wicked achievement and an even more wickeder cause :niceone:

In the vid I see you lost a bit of traction, at 1:45mins and again at 3:05mins, a few slippery poo deposits from the herds? Great rear end slide recovery. Probably can't say the same for the innards of your leathers though huh?

There was quite a good idea in this article - how many rubix cubes you can solve while running the marathon.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-13110107

One guy was crawling a marathon dressed as a snail - one mile per day

You could do it as a socially responsible message - "Alcohol and sport don't mix".

I'm sure you'd puke, presenting the ugly side of alcohol. ALAC could sponsor you.

Thought i better go for a run to see what i'm in for next Sunday. It was warm but not hot, about 12-14deg i'd guess.

:eek5:

Did 6km, it was MUCH harder running with the helmet on. Gets really hot really fast. May have bitten off more than I can chew here! 50/50 chances of making the full 21km I recon. Let's hope it's a cold day!

Ah yes, race pace walking is much harder than it looks (it looks hard enough). Uses totally different muscle groups to running.

Overloaded both hammys with all the knee locking, they packed it in for a couple of months, and the chafing was horrendous.
