Best 250cc dual purpose? WR250F and good?

Is there a 250cc bike thats great for trails and long trips on the road aswell?
I was thinking of getting a WR250F but have been told will be pretty shit on long trips like chch to the brass monkey kinda of trips

I have the F and it is not suited to long road trips. Talk to Rosie and Andy Mac about the WR250R they are probably far better for it - including having a 6 speed gearbox. That model didn't exist when I bought my F, if it had I would've bought one I am sure.

had a jap import dr250 which was the same as a drz250 good for shingle roads and trips, 130kms flat out and sit on 100kms nice. if you trail ride with mates on two strokes or high power four strokes then you have to work hard to keep up.. i'd buy another road rego'd one tomorrow if i had the spare cash

note it was geared up high for the road

I'm really pleased with my WRR, it's a good compromise between off road ability, and on road comfort, being more road-oriented than the WRF.
We've given it a few additions (large tank, luggage racks etc) to get it set up for touring, and I've done about 17,000km on it over the last year and a bit.
But, everyone's definitions of "on road comfort" and "off road ability" are going to be different so it's good to think about where you'd be riding, and the kinds of people you'd be riding with, then doing some test riding to see what is going to work.

If I had the money, I'd drop my TT350 and get a WR250R in a heartbeat.

The TT in it's day was an enduro weapon (Stephane Peterhansel - ISDE Gold Medal) and the WRR is it's softer modern equivalent.
