Can any one tell me how hard it is and what I am to expect when I undo the 3 nuts holding my triple tree down, reason puttting rissers on and hav to put all cables behind instead of infront, other chioce is to undo and bleed brakes and clutch, but hav never bleed a clutch before? :weird: These are my only 2 chioces due to set up of bike and rissers ect?

You'll need to support the bike if you remove the whole clamp (use a jack)
Stand the bike straight "up&down" with support under the bike, the front wheel should have no wieght on it but still touching the ground and put a block at the front to stop it rolling away(when clamp removed).
Remove the clamp, and put your new clamp on... you wont need to bleed anything.
If you have weight on the front wheel when you remove the clamp, the wheel (and forks with it) will roll forward and you'll have a hard time getting the clamp back on.

Its not a biggy if you get it wrong... you'll just need to work a little harder.

Dont do it on its side stand... the forks might twist (no biggy either tho)

Did mine on the side stand. Loosened one side(not fully- enough to push the fork through)>adjusted height>tighten then did the other exactly the same way. easy peasy on my bike. good luck :niceone:

Yeah, adjusting the hieght one side at a time is OK on the stand, thats how I do it...but removing the whole clamp may not be... either way Its not a major issue if you get it wrong

As long as you don't undo the bottem yoke bolts nothing will move by undoing the top yoke.On most bikes the top yoke doesn't hold the steering stem in place anyway. That's looked after by a large nut under the top yoke. The nut you see on top of the yoke just holds the yoke it's self in place, not the steering stem.
You can do it with the bike on it's side stand if you don't have a main stand,in fact you could do it with the bike standing on it's head so long as you don't touch the steering stem nut,an your not going to be doing that just to lift the top yoke.
Cheers.

Sounds to me you aren't replacing the triple clamp itself (or are you?), so another way of doing this is one side at a time as mentioned by others above. Leave the triple clamps attached to the steering head bearings i.e. don't undo the centre, but undo the fork clamps on one side and shove that fork down just enough to clear the top clamp to get the cables through and then lift the fork tube back up where it ought to be and do it up again and repeat on the other side. You can usually shove a fork tube down quite a way against its spring without any hassle if you have the bike jacked up.

I think he wants to remove the whole clamp to put his lines and cables in behind the clamp?... so the stem nut will need to come off, Merv's idea is good if you can do it to the big cruiser, push down one tube and slip your lines through that is? if you know how to remove the front wheel it might be a good option

Only reason I have said do it one side at a time is that sometimes that bloody big centre nut is a bastard to undo, you'll need a spanner big enough and watch you don't scratch the top of the lovely triple clamp doing it. Just undoing the side fork clamps usually only needs about a 14mm spanner. Usually the cables only thread through between the centre and one fork tube and not both so you don't need all sides off at once. I wasn't talking about any need to take the wheel off because the fork compression is more than enough to drop the top below the triple clamp and allow just enough room for the cables.

Also if you are putting risers on you are replacing the bars so will have to take the handgrips and levers off and you may be able to thread the cables and hydraulic lines through without even undoing the forks at all if the spacing between the forks and the centre is great enough.

Thanks guys, yep all I need to do is shift all my cables from the front of the TT to the back, with out having to re-bleed clucth and brake, So if I undo the 2 top fork nuts and the middle steering nut can I lft the triple tree off for a minute then put it back on and just make sure its all alined, or are there some nasty surprises under there waited for me?

I spun the shaft getting the nut off once on GPz900, I ended up having to pull it down and re-seat the stupid thing... pain in the butt.
