View Full Version : Buell or Ducati?

Hey guys. Need some help here from people that have ridden the following. I've done a search and read lots of threads on the Buell XB12R. I'm currently considering buying one as a daily rider doing around 27km trip (54km return) and the odd weekend blast.
My past bike was a Ducati 750SS and I loved it but now I would prefer a more Cafe racer style bike. I love the look of the XB12R and have read mostly good things about them. The alternative would be a Ducati Monster (currently looking at a 620 dark).
The confusing thing about the Monsters is there is so many flippen variations. 600, 900, 620, 800ie, 1000ie etc etc. The other alternative is a Triumph Street Triple however I do prefer the v twin engines over in-lines.
So how do the three bikes compare.
* I appreciate the Monster and Triumph would have a more upright seating position would the XB12R be too hunched over?
* Is the pillion ride on a XB12R horrible compared to a Monster or Triumph?
* Like for like would the XB12R be cheaper to annually than the Monster or Triumph?
* Would a 620 dark feel slow compared to my older 750SS?
For those that say I really need to ride them to know what I prefer, I simple can't in my area as there is no XB12R's around for sale and to be honest I am so limited for time to do multiple test rides.
I'm probably leaning towards the XB12R as it has a larger engine, I like the styling, its differant/rarer and I would guess cheaper to run over a year. However i have always loved the Dukes.
Any other constructive comments you think may help?
Thanks guys :) KCG

* Depends, it's not as bad as most sports bikes.
* Not as comfortable, no, but again not as bad as some. If it's a deal breaker consider an XB12S.
* Yes.
* Haven't ridden a 750SS but the 620 is reasonably punchy for it's capacity. Nowhere near the torque of the other two though.

I would go with the duck. The buell just feels bigger and not as easy to throw around.I commute about the same distance on a m750 and it's easier to ride through traffic.

Thanks MIXONE. The commute is basically SH1 and bugger all traffic. Leave at 4am and return in the afternoon so not weaving through loads of cars. The Monster certainly looks a lot more chuckable. Just not so keen on the maintenance levels of the Duke.

So a wee diversion through pauatahanui is on the cards of a nice crisp morning?
As for chuckability... the three you're looking at are all very good. The Duc possibly the more nimble, the Triumph quick and predictable, but in the tight the Buell is very hard to beat.
I'd think twice before puting myself at the mercy of Triumph NZ. Engines in the 620 are easier to live with than you might remember from the 750. The Buell has good local support in Wgt MCC, but in any given year they'll most likely see it just for tyres.

Street is a hell of a lot of bike. Definitely worth a testy.
I'd go up cc on the Ducati as IMO the 620 is a wee bit 'lacking' and though a very nice ride it is a entry level Ducati. It is not a lot more $ for a bigger one.

personally, the financial turmoil of Buell both past and present would prob put me off wanting one.
Also, if you are doing much 2-up then you are going to want 900cc plus.
Havent ridden a duc for a while or triumph but if you are looking V twin you could do a lot worse than a SV1000 or even VTR1000 bang for buck.

Crazy if ya don't mate.......in fact I'd love a crack on 'em both myself! Not so much the 620 Monster (I'll something a bit more in the testicular department thanks, Pete), but even as a diehard Ducati lover an XB12R is one bike I'd like to own at some stage.

Harley have ceased Buell production, but we have no problems getting parts for them and won't for another nine or so years.

Thanks so much everyone for all your replies. I've bit the bullet and doing a deal on an XB12R. If it all goes through ok I'll post up pics when it arrives.
I looked at the Motoguzzi and always liked them and the Triumph also was very appealing. I also considered an Aprilia 1000 Mille, TL1000S, VTR SP2 but visually I like stuff that people think what the heck is that when they see it. I like different stuff. There's a really nice Triumph Street Triple in Wellington. Ultimately though I wanted something that was as late a year as possible with the lowest Km's and was really tidy.
Here's a pic of my old bike.

With those three bikes you've mentioned, I'd go for the Street. Never liked the smaller engined Monsters, they don't go that well. The XB12R is a great bike too, but, I found, not so nice to ride everywhere (I'd still own one)

I've always wanted a 916 but couldn't bring myself to buying one and even then I'd prefer a Senna.
I must say the bike pricing is cray out there. There was a 916 that went for $6500 on TM and ones for $11k. Get what you pay for I'm guessing. There is stuff with 40, 50, 60km's on the clock for around $4,5,6k and then for another $1500-2000 you can have a bike MY2000+ and under 20km's. Its such a mixed market. I was watching these to give you an idea.

I'm sure your right. It really came down to running cost. This one aint going to be a Sunday toy but a daily commuter so I was worried at the yearly running cost of the Ducati and the Buell costs are minimal. At the end of the day though I can always sell it as they seem fairly popular.

Buells are an aquired taste but I have an XB12R that I purchased while the TL1000s goes through a much deserved rest and rebuild . I got it because they look awesome and are simple , no radiator to get stones through , no bloody valve clearance shims to test the maths and character , lots of character . Once you set them up the handling is better than good , capable of lean angles and corner speeds beyond my ability.
look forward to pics

All the derision the 'push rod tractor engine' endures is especially meaningless when the service dept hands you the bill.
Plus it's one of the best fun engines in a road bike.
I've had my XB12X almost six years and remain Ducati-envy free.

Two things really... I like stuff that is different and the Buell is certainly a bike that people think what the heck is that and secondly maintenance. I've had a Ducati and love them but as a daily rider I think it may be too costly per year. I guess only time will tell.
I mostly think its just a flippen awesome looking bike. I'm not worried about 0-160, top speed or whether its quicker than this or that through the corners. Too many cops around now for that and there will always be a faster bike or rider. I'll enjoy it for what it is.

ahhh few goodies on it already I see, you can get some cool shit at a price, best mod on Rashika's is hydrolic clutch conversion (04's were shockers) do you have the race ECU with that can?
Reckon the last of em in the red is the nicest looking, the screens a bit much tho so a dark tint IMO would finish it off well.
Reconmend puks too good drop protection for the tank/frame and actually help with wind flow.

I dropped my XB12X when virtually stationary - mossy concrete slope, foot slipped twice and down she came.
No damage. Landed on the crash pucks and hand guards. The blinkers even fold out of the way. Done it on other modern bikes too and it's cost thousands.
I also like the fact that it is 'regular' maintenance free.
Check the oil, hit the muffler with a bit of rattle can black plaint every now and then and wave a hose at it - and it's done. There are no bright finish parts on mine.

I don't. The 2010 CR has the dirt bike bars standard, it's the best layout of all the Buells for me.
The engine's just stunning, Chris Sales took mine for a wee play on Manfeild, came in saying "Fark, it's got power from... just everywhere". There's days I'd swap it for the engine out of my XB12R, though.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
It's a wee self-reminder that the thing most likely to kill me isn't making a mistake, it's panicking about it, which almost always results in a second mistake... etc, etc.

Finally got a chance to take a couple of better pics. Loving the bike. Very similar in nature to my 911.

Nope, Made right there in Bunnythorpe about 200 metres North of the roundabout.
I've owned a 964 Turbo and that was a handful. Would love a 964RS.

964RS would be the ideal machine for me, I think the Turbo is going a bit far...
