Good luck. After 72 hours you will be free from the physical addiction .. once that is passed it's all psychological addiction ...

Well ive tried to cut down before etc but that never worked, and the patches gave me some trippy dreams and didn't really do much. Just thought it's time to grow a pair and do it.

All the girls will be happy for the non-smoky kisses now lol

Good on ya! I agree that cold turkey is the only way that really works.
I sat the pack on the mantlepiece and every time I wanted a smoke I just went over to them and said, "No, you bastards, you can f***well stay there!"

Haven't smoked for over 15 years.

Good on ya mate - hang in there. A few tips from someone who's done it.

Cold turkey is best. Don't try to give up - do it.

The psychological hurdle is the hardest. Once you've made that commitment to yourself that you're not smoking any more, it gets easier.

Buy rewards for yourself with the money saved.

Put extra effort into oral hygiene - mouth ulcers are common (your mouth is used to the germ-killing smoke).

Good luck.

Cold turkey is best. Don't try to give up - do it.

Yes Yoda...

But he is correct... "do not try, do or do not...there is no try."

I use to smoke 2 packs a day (was cheap in the navy) but when I left I couldn't really afford it so much and especially when I started cough up black green shit in the morning... I said fook that... so gave up cold turkey...

Most after the first couple of days is psychological and as every one has pointed out that, the hard part... but in the long run well worth it...

Good luck

And i have made the decision when i did it that i wouldn't be trying to, because if you are trying, you don't really want to give up.

If you just do it, that is when you are ready to quit.

You dont save the money you would have spent on smokes (thats a bullshit line) you spend it on other things. Other things that mean more you than a smoke ever did.
Yes I worked it out that I would spend $4000 per year on smokes...now I dont.

Yea i haven't saved anything yet, but i may set up an automatic transfer of what i would used to spend on smokes and put it onto a savings account, use it to fund a trip somewhere.

Good thinking that man! I have not had a smoke in 18 months and dont even think about it now. The first couple of days when the habit wanted feeding were probably the worst, but if you have made the decision to stop smoking you will be fine. All you have to do is not have one smoke, and that is easy.

I was a heavy smoker and had smoked for over 35 years, I simply decided to stop and did! Never regretted it. Your industry is notorious for smokers, stay focussed.

We have a woman that has recently started working in my office. She is a smoker. The smell of smoke was very obvious when she first started. She has elected not to smoke during work hours (she is the only smoker, and it is a bit lonely out in the carpark by yourself) no pressue or anything, her call.

Now all i can smell is her baccy! She is a Port Royal Smoker and it reeks! Imagine saying that, not so long ago I used to enjoy the odd rolly Port Royal

I used to love it, but the cold baccy smells revolting. I dont usually mind the smell of smoke, in fact I quite like it :pinch: depends on the brand I think. You can smell a smoker a mile away. I never realised that. YUK! So glad I dont smoke anymore!

You know this is something my kids commented on. Despite the fact we never smoked in our car, and always smoked outside, when we eventually stopped, they commented on how nice our house smelled. We had non smoking forends visit us and say the same :pinch: I know that now, but when you smoke, no matter how much you try to make things "not smell" they still do.

On ya mate. I've never smoked so don't appreciate how hard it would be to give up. I've always hated the stink of it. Even when I'm following a car and the drivers window is down I get the stink... So I reckon I've got evidence to prove it's bad for my health to stay behind cars!!!

Has been 6 weeks for me after 25 years of slavery. It's great to be able to go for a walk or something and not panic because there are only a couple of smokes left in the packet and it might be an hour before I get to a shop.

Well done all.

I stopped 3 years ago, one of the hardest things I've ever done. And you're right, trying to stop doesn't work, seeing yourself as a non smoker works.

Only downside is; I'd love a cigar, from time to time. But I can't have one, I'm non smoker.

To take an idea from a book I read, it's just the little nicotine monster inside you screaming and writhing because he's starving to death. He's going through more pain than you are. From now on the only way you'll ever be worse off than him is if you start smoking again.

You just need to smile and think "take that, you fucking little fucker".

Over time he'll become weaker and weaker until he fades away.

Just don't have another ciggie or you'll end up right back at square one.

Good luck

I've been watching this thread with interest. I've also "tried" to give up dozens of times, but this time I've decided to actually give up.

The last time I tried was with patches and gum, but like always found myself smoking again. So I made the smokers promise next time will be for real.
Believe or not being a professional smoking giver upper had benefits of hindsight, and I actually learned a few things that are helping.

1) I promised myself my next visit to the quack would include a request for Champax (no they don't have strings...well not anymore anyway:facepalm:) It's now coming up to day 14 on the course and tomorrow is rip up the ciggies day.

2) I promised my daughter and son(not myself) I would be smoke free before her 10th birthday, which is the begining of August.

3) I didn't tell anyone I was quitting (until now) so there was no other pressure from anyone else. (being a freedom of choice thought, I'd like to think having my last smoke was as much my own choice as picking up my first)Wost thing when you are giving up is getting drilled by someone because they "thought you were giving up!"

After two weeks backing off on the smokes, scoffing mints and "leaning" on an e-cig, I'm already finding it easier this time. Had a smoke this morning and shock horror! I couldn't stomach that first puff of the day!:shit::shit:

Have you read Allen Carr's 'Easyway to Stop Smoking' ? I know alot of smokers that quit Cold Turkey (including myself) 5 + years ago read this book.

I have some freaky memories of my quit. Like throwing my laptop out a window during the first week, jumping on it like a madman & screeming my head off. Don't know what the neighbours thought .... I bought that book & the rest is history.

There is a sort of inner peace after you quit... very rewarding.

Good on ya !
