Did you Opt-Out of having your personal details made available from the motor-vehicle register ?

It looks like the NZTA are going to provide a "back-door" to motor vehicle dealers, finance companies etc.

Anyone who supports the existing system, where your details (if you are opted out are protected) should dash off a quick email to

info@nzta.govt.nz

and let them know you opted out for a reason, and you don't want to lose protection, just because it suits Wilson Parking or Freds automart to know who you are.

If you haven't already opted out, your personal details are available to a wide range of companies and individuals.

That dodgy fella who likes your Harley, or wants to stalk your girlfriend can trace you from registration details unless you actively opt out - its not done by default.

You can opt out online.

You just need your driver licence number, and a registration number. The system will automatically add any other vehicles in your name if you want it to.

I have to bump this thread.

If people don't OPT OUT and if people don't email and say they want to have their personal details kept confidential, then they will all be made available.

Please, OPT OUT and send an email to NZTA saying you want OPT OUT to mean that your personal details are not available.

Otherwise you will lose it.

Good post. Thanks for posting it up.

So this would mean if you opt out, something like CarJam would no longer give your full name and general area in which you live when someone puts in your reg?

If you are not opted out, anyone can get your personal information by filling out a form, MR31.

This is full information, including your full address, not just the general area.

And "authorised persons" of which there is a massive list can get it electronically from the NZTA.

Once you opt out, its no longer automatically released. The NZTA have to consider the application and be convinced that its not dodgy.

But, lots of companies don't like this. They want to be able to get it easily.

We are talking about Wilson Parking so they can send you private tickets, finance companies, car dealers, private investigators, etc etc.

IF WE DONT USE IT WE WILL LOSE IT !
