The unpixelated version is on various web sites. (Not that I'm suggesting using one).

I've seen one American describe one (there are several pictures) as "one of the most badass pictures to come out of Afghanistan".

Yeah, NZHerald getting a beating over the publishing. Some websites still have unedited pics...but most are now pixelated.

Interesting commentary on the publishing of photos here from Ex SAS top dog - http://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/podcasts/audio/30091001.mp3

Actually, I'm not sure why NZ soldiers should need anonymity unless they are doing shit that strictly speaking they shouldn't be.

In the UK the SAS would regularly come face to face with Irish terrorists in undercover operations, there anonymity was protected for this reason. What is NZ's SAS doing that should require it?

If they are using PMCs then that might be a reason. Places like Blackwater and NVM have been in a fair amount of trouble for "doing things they shouldn't be"

These guys work all over the world with terrorism. Osama Binladen got from Afghanistan to New York easily enough, ya reckon he couldn't have made it to NZ?
That is why they are protected!

pretty fucked really.

Utgarde made a fuck up by getting that photo out so quickly - AFP news types spread it far and wide.
Once it was thought to be a SAS unit, publishing the photo included pixelated faces to help protect their identities. The Herald fucked up bigtime, but since then has removed the unedited pics from online. All major western media has removed the unedited versions.
They would LOVE to publish them - the faces are extraordinary. Amazing photos. But its not right to fuck them over like that.

Regardless of your thoughts on NZ being involved in Afghan. Our government has sent our guys over there. By publishing their pics, you place them at risk, more risk than they are already facing.

Why do that to our own guys?

Syria in within lazy reach though.

Probably because some Colonel told them to.

I don't think the guys on the ground much give a fuck.

I mean, did Willie Apiata VC think "Oh no's, people know what I look like now - I'm going to have to become a gardener".

jaffaonajappa
