From the 10th July the system of helmet importation will change.
Acceptable international approvals will be:
UN/CE 22
AUST STANDARD AS1698
NZ STANDARD NZ5430
SNELL
BRITISH STANDARD BS6658
JIS T8133
FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD 218 (DOT)

In the case of DOT, the helmet must be MANUFACTURERED and sold in the US. As few, if any, helmets are made in the States be warned.

I wouldn't be surprised if this might herald a crackdown on unapproved helmets.

well helmets are used by other sports like motor racing, as well as us bikers.. There's lots they could do to directly help bikers, this is more passive..
but we won't go there..

Oh no, you know what this means don't you? I'll have to buy myself a new helmet... :whistle: I really don't want to waste my money on buying a lovely new helmet, but if I must to avoid breaking the law, then I must. :yes:

Check inside it or on the strap for standards marks.

there should be a sticker on the back of the lid, or somewhere inside, possibly on the strap.
Doesn't mean that all of a sudden, you're illegal. Just means your next lid will be that standard or better

Thats interesting thanks Lou. Are there any brands being sold new that arent to standard or is this an attempt to get people using old and unsafe ones to upgrade?

Facing the same problem I had at the track. Can't find out if it is up to standard or not as it doesn't have a sticker on it saying if it is or not. My Motocross helmet has a appropriate sticker, only its 5 years old

The HJC CS10 should be European Standards approved - it will have a label sewn onto the strap anchor with an E# in a circle on it.

The Snell approved & some DOT approved helmets will have the Snell sticker pictured on the LTSA link hidden under the helmet liner, stuck to the polystyrene layer of the helmet shell in the top.

This is the crunch. Responsibility to ensure the helmets are legal is falling on the retailer.

Yeah, there's the model desription and legal sticker saying that HJC have no legal obligations if you get killed, thats it



The HJC CS10 should be European Standards approved - it will have a label sewn onto the strap anchor with an E# in a circle on it.
There's 'E1' on the strap. Guess thats a good thing?

That's the UN/CE 22 on the top of his list.E stands for Economic Comission for Europe,3 is the country that issued the standard - and that has always been a helmet standard,nothing has changed.I'd think there would be a grandfather clause - the helmet you now have is still legal,but any new helmet will have to comply.Same for the retailer,they sold them as legal at the time....but all sales from X date etc.Look out for the helmet sales!
