I didn't realise anything that small was considered an earthquake, our aftershocks are considerably bigger than that

Yeah, went to a comedy club a few months back, about 2-3 weeks after the biggun.
The 'ad-break' guy tried pumping the crowd with this zinger;
"We were out back getting out gamefaces on, we're going to rock it like Canterbury!"
I was the only one who laughed, because this guy used to try do magic tricks at school and was never ever funny. Still had the same haircut :shutup:

I'll be parked in front of the TV news tonight then.
I'm sure the media will be able to find evidence of DEVESTATION and are sure to be able to find a couple of talkback radio listeners to talk of their personal experience and how SHAKEN AND JITTERY they are.
Are all you JAFA's thinking of moving out?
I mean it can't be safe there.

There's lots of reasons why it should. Calling it an earthquake would be hard to take if you live in Chch for sure, but if nothing else it will make people think about their preparedness for the real deal. Not immune.

A magnitude-2.9 earthquake rattled Auckland on Friday night but GNS seismologist Lara Bland said it was "unlikely" the earthquake had any connection to the rockfall given the relatively small shake and time lapse between the two events

Point #1: The Auckland "earthquake" is a non-event. Especially more so to the cantabrian's who live/have lived through much worse.
Point #2: It is a good wake-up call for other parts of the NZ population who have not considered their own "emergency actions" and kit (probably most of Auckland...)

Torches are a dime a dozen these days and any $2 shop stocks them dirt cheap. Unfortunately we aren't big enough to compete in the bottom end of the market and we have to sell stuff we can stand behind.
So, yeah, you can do a range of stuff really cheap, but it's the old story you get what you pay for. I've sold to customers who went that way only to find that when they needed it to work, it died, and that is for a range of different items.
It's hard for us up here to really appreciate what Chch is going through, and all we can do is sympathise and help where we can. It's not going to be over quickly, either.
