View Full Version : Roys Hill, 3 July race report

Thanks to all those that came along and made for a most excellent days racing. Unfortunately a couple went away with injuries that hopefully will not be too serious.
We had about 8 riders from Welly and 2 from Auck, about 35 entries in total, we had 180 degrees of sunshine all day long, 2 bucket grades and a handful of Motards.
I had a very enjoyable day out and my bike worked faultlessly. Although I can't beat Henk I went past him anyway and rode of into the distance, Tyler blew the Aprilia/Loncin up again, given the hard charging after FXRs this seems to have become the norm.
Helen crashed twice, once for practice and once for real. Brent had a lapse of something and placed my bike in the sideways position on the grass which provided him with a retirement after a quick fix to get me back on the track.
Hope to see you all again soon.

What a cool track! Great weather too which was really awesome. Not used to riding on a hot and dry track but I could get used to it haha. Very happy I came up, very happy my new bike went really well and I really enjoyed the racing. I would love to come up and race all the time but I don't have enough money.
Cheers to the event organisers and flag marshals, great job guys.
I saw a photographer out there towards the end of the day, where abouts do we find the photos online? Would love to see pictures of the day.
Hope Helen is doing ok, I went and saw her and Malcolm in hospital and she looked like she was doing ok but very upset and in a fair bit of pain (not to mention feeling very sick, poor girl!).

Awesome weekend, great weather, great racing and great company.
The tourists (myself inculded) did seem to spend a bit of time on the deck but I guess you get that.
Get well soon Helen.

I think there was actually 10 from Welly, as Moools and dad/son (sorry can never remember which is which) were also there today and they hadn't been at practice yesterday so don't think we'd counted them but not 100% sure. Auckland was definitely under-represented, but wait for the N.I. round.
Great to catch up with friends and meet others. Sorry I missed Grant's crash, but I'm sure there'll be plenty more for me to spectate lol (sorry Grant, can't resist - and that's Henk's corner, even though plenty of others seemed keen to see what all the fuss was about).
Thanks to everyone who helped out, especially Yungatart and her mistress ;) (I'm the one that tagged along for the 30 lap A grade race as I never bothered introducing myself). thanks heaps too for your help with Hels, I was glad you were on that flag point.
NigelA was running around with a camera in the 30 lap race, but not sure where he plants the pix. We'll try and get some video footage up sometime this week, but no promises.
Hope everyone got home safely, the last part of the Taupo bypass was closed due to an accident, which is never nice to see.
See a lot of you down in Kaitoke in October :) (lots more sleeps till that one)
Michelle
Oh and a huge thanks to Jason, making the kids sleep in the lounge so you can find beds for six and a dog is going above and beyond in my book.

Hi all, I am a VERY lucky girl!! I will have a black arse cheek and tail bone for quite awhile but no breaks whatsoever. They wanted to keep me in but luckily I managed to escape and am home now. Body is sore but I had a great time. This will be my first ever crash from trying to push myself and I got lucky really!!
Thanks to all the stewards and esp Janet and everyone else for really taking care of me. Sorry to all those that got held up by my off and especially the guy that had lent me his bike. Can someone please pass on his name and contact details - I have a feeling that I have a bit of "putting right" to do!
I actually had a great weekend and rode better and faster than I ever have. I know exactly what I did wrong and remember the whole incident - I have some practice to do to start getting off the bike (an not in a crashing way). If I had have got more off the bike I would've made the corner sweet!!
Much, much thanks goes to RDJase - thanks for being a great mate! :niceone:

Glad you're home safe and sound. Funny, I was thinking about one of our conversations on the weekend, and wondering if you had enough food out for doodles and how she was going to cope with two nights away.
I have to say though, karma's a bitch. Something to do with whiplash, which we all thought hilarious late this avo.
I didn't even realise it was you down until I got back (I didn't recognise the bike and couldn't get a clear view of you), but realised it was bad when Janet was by you (I think it was her, not really sure, it was all a bit of a blur).
Let us know if we can do anything.

Funny you say that, she was my reason for having to go! :)

Yes, karma is a bitch. Especially cause I had to email work and tell them I actually had a broken arse and would be off work for a few days!!

A big thanks for a great weekend, simply put it rocked.
Can you please tell me your booking agent for weather, it was mint. I want to use them to book same weather for 2 weeks time here in Wellington with a slightly warmer morning.
Much thanks to Nigel, Steve and the rest of the organizers for letting bikerbee out on both days. She learnt heaps and definitely enthusiastic to do again. I have never seen her so content and proud of herself as she was when we got home.
And now to the garage to play mechanic.

Glad you guys enjoyed some real HB hospitality and, as for our weather, well, it IS like that most of the time, so no special orders necessary!
Hels now has a Roy's Hill record, up until yesterday there had never been a red flag incident there, now there has been two, and she owns them both! Hope you are feeling okay chicky, did my ambo mates look after you well?
Nice to meet a few of you in person. No doubt, we'll do it again...

As a result of the above incidents, the Roy' Hill Behaviour Management Plan has been ammended...
Hope you are doing OK. I'm having an easy day nursing sore ribs. Elbow or ripple strips got them, not sure which?

Cheers mate, I am OK. One of my arse cheeks is alot bigger than the other and I have some very impressive bruising from slamming my arse onto the ripple strips before flying and cartwheeling into the distance. Of course today I am finding a few more aches and pains, especially on my foot. But at the end of the day I got off sweet!
Will be back in October and I promise to try my hardest not to cause anymore red flags!!

Was fantastic seeing you out there Amy and you did such a good job. I have to get some road tyres on our XR100 so I can get my red-head girl out there too. She will be starting at a similar level to you.

Must have been one of my slow laps :brick:
Cheers for doing them also, always an interesting read. Think its time we added a few weights to that 117, starting to get too fast now.

Yes, confirms that you are getting slower, 40.81 yesterday and last Oct 39.39.
The guy you should be worried about is #6. Yesterday 41.35 and last Oct 43.53. Thats more than 2 seconds a lap faster... now, who's your daddy?
#94 was 40.92 last Oct and yesterday blown again.
Last Oct saw Fishie at 38.39, Fixer at 38.66, and Andrew A at 38.67.
So they must be unofficial lap records
As for #117, I have a cunning plan, which involves a a dead leg, a faulty killswitch, and a :innocent:bit of teamwork at the start line.

Was an awesome day. Thanks to Steve B for the use of his bike once again. I did have a lapse of something :facepalm:in the second race. Sore ribs and shoulder. But not as impressive as "Str8 Jacket" by the sounds of it. Having just got back on the bike after a big off at Mt Wellington I know you will be keen as to get back on the bike. Cheers to a quick recovery.

I know things will change before the next bucket meet, and as soon as I'm back on track, will totally screw it all up.
What I haven't realised is that things have started to change for me. I'm a shocker at concentrating. I've watched birds (seagull at Mt Welly, falcon at Roy's Hill), pulled off to watch racing because it was more interesting than actually riding, decided I'm too hungry to bother riding and generally can't be bothered.
First practice on Sunday (well, only one), I worked out that lunch seemed way more interesting than riding, so pulled off early to grab a bread roll (it was good). I don't eat breakfast usually, but had forced some cereal down my gullet, so wasn't really hungry. Anyway, I think it all helped for a change. I actually concentrated on what I was doing and rode okay for me.
Flagging I chose a couple of points I was having issues with, and paid attention to what lines people were taking, and what they were doing. Not sure what lap times I'd been doing in previous races, as didn't really have time to look before handing it over to Henk. But, I did notice in the last race that my times were around 3s better than whenever I'd last looked.
I need to work on starts, acceleration, braking, gear changes, overtaking, confidence - so not much really. Concentration should be remedied by that.
I do enjoy riding, I'm just not really convinced about the racing scene, but I know I'm not a good supporter either (hence me even bothering to learn to ride in my 30's). I get on the road bike, go for a blat and thoroughly enjoy exploring our beautiful countryside, and wonder why I bother riding the bucket.
Thanks again to everyone who made it a fantastic weekend, I do always enjoy the social side of it, it's just the racing I'm not convinced about (I've had plenty of people trying to force me to be competitive in other sports, and just given up on them, rather than arguing - first time I remember doing that I was about 6).
Anyways, those who injured themselves, heal quickly. See a lot of you again at Kaitoke in October or Roy's Hill in December for the N.I. rounds :)

From what I saw, you were going all good out there on the track. Im sure everyone can work on acceleration, braking, gear changes, overtaking, confidence, so wouldnt let that get ya down, hell your out there doing it which is the main thing!
The weekend was the first time in 2 months that my bike had been started and wheeled out of the garage, kept it on two wheels and completed all three races(first time this year I think) and turn 1 is still as much fun as ever sliding the rear wheel into the corner.

Sounds fair enough to me mate. You have to be doing for yourself, whether it is for the pleasure or the challenge. When I started, the biggest learning I did was about the emotional ups and downs. I wasn't expecting them. For other people the challenges will be completely different.
You could always sell your bike to a bald middle-aged guy who should be painting his house and building a deck
See you in October Chicky.
