People back then must have been more sensible than today - no fences to keep spectators out of harm's way...

These days we're too stupid to look after ourselves - so OSH tells me anyway...

Thanks for posting the Cust film. Interesting to see how the circuit changed quite quickly - a year or so later the farmers shed was built at the start line, the roof of which became the lapscoring/timekeepers stand. Spectators were kept behind the hedges too....
Ten years later you'd have seen me helping the old man lapscore...till he lost patience and sent me off to wander the pits and round the circuit...a great time for a kid.
Garages all over ChCh and Rangiora kept used oil in drums all year until it was collected and rolled into the surface to keep dust down - actually quite a good surface to ride on.

I seem to remember in the 80's going out there and watching a race... obviously not the same track, was it a one of or had they been running that race all that time?

they've had reunion race meetings every few years and I beleive it's as cloe to the original track as possible.
great footage, somewhere here I've got about 1 1/2 hrs interveiw i did with Len Perry and about 1 hr I did with Syd Jensen too
must get em digitised and share em...

Last GP at Cust was '62 - first at Ruapuna was '63 I later owned the 500 Manx which won the Senior both years....wish I still had it.

There's been a couple of revival meetings on the circuit but it won't happen again...a big part of the circuit now has a large number of lifestyle blocks fronting it and getting road closure has become damm near impossible.
