I've seen a youtube video of a guy with a goldwing and car rear tire, pops wheelies, scrapes the outriggers (hehe) etc. He swears by it.

There's a guy in Christchurch that has done that, what would insurance say in the event of an accident using a tyre not designed for a bike? is it legal for a WOF?

There's a KB'er from Wellington who has tried this also, I think (wasn't sure if he was taking the piss TBH)

The car tyre is obviously not going to work as well as a proper motorcycle tyre. But even amongst motorcycle tyres there are lots of options, and we all have to pick one.
Perhaps they like the look of it, and performance and stability are secondary concerns for them.

But hey it saves wear and tear on the side stand, cos its stands up by itself!

The bike used by hopper in 'easy rider' from way back in the 60's or 70's is on display in a museum in the USA complete with a firestone car type crossply rear tyre . As all the roads over there are straight & merkins can't ride around corners it seems a logical choice:innocent:

There is still a ''following'' in the states that use car tyres.Perhaps if the riding you do is 600k trips on 8 lane freeways its all good.Fk all use on a blast Whangarei to Kaitaia though.

There is even some idiots over there that have stuck them on Concours 14's

I wonder what the handlings like..
Turn in might be a bit heavy. Putting 5-10bar in them might give a bit of a nice radius for turning though, just hope it isn't a hardtail

:shit: reckon you'd need at least a truck tyre for a Concours :dodge:

This would work with an old style bias-ply car tyre cause they have more of a round cross-section.
Doing it with a modern, low-profile tyre with distinctly different sidewall and carcass construction is just...retarded.

I've watched a video of one in operation, the contact patch on a lean is far bigger than a motorcycle tyre because the tyre shape changes as the weight moves to the edge. Better braking in straight line conditions, cheaper, better mileage etc. I would try one if my bike would take it, you just adapt your ridng style.

are you sure about that? not trying to pick a fight or anything but my understanding was that both the movie bikes (there were a couple of reach I think) were stolen and parted out early in the 70's?
going to do some research on that now. I always liked the Billy bike better than the Captain America bike.

You are both right.
One was destroyed in the end for the fire shots. The other was stolen.
The one on display is the one blown up. They took what was left, and rebuilt it.

I wonder what the Insurance co would think about it in the event of a claim. Or whether it would be wof legal?
The contact patch might be bigger, but surely it wouldn't have the same gripping characteristics that a purpose made motorbike tyre would. Certainly not if it rolled onto the tread shoulder while cornering.
If the car tyre tread tried to stay flat on the road while cornering, then the tyre would tend to push the bike straight ahead. Remember the three wheeler farmtrikes a few years ago?
Think I'll stick with bike tyres on my bike, and car tyres on my car.

You're right. I had forgotten that the drive on a trike was the biggest effect on the turning ability of the trikes. I know they could be sods of things to turn at times
