Fast and Loose (just like the other wind problem).
Just relax and let it go (just like the other wind problem)

Don't tense up on the bars, loosening up allows you to change your lean angle as each gust hits. With small to medium gusts it basically shifts the bike around under you rather than moving you about in the lanes.

Oh...I was just gonna warn you about the beans...
I love riding in stormy conditions - dunno why - just that fighting the elements thing I guess.
I tuck down tight and apart from that, just let the bike do what it wants - stay loose on the bars, relax the arms - don't fight it. Keeping a reasonable speed seems to help too. Go too slow and it seems worse. Not sure about going too fast...

I do hold on to hard. My right arm is sore when I get back from a ride. Ive ordered some wide bars as i feel a little cramped to. So losen up then.
It was my first going to get something ride, what to the chemist. They get a bit jumpy when you walk in with a helmet on.

Another tip to help with that is only use the inside arm for control, leave the other one loose, gives greater precision and less effort cos you arms are fighting each other.
Yeh I can't blame them!

Years ago, five of us were in single file on the Desert rd with a howling cross wind. Four of us were leant way over into the wind, high, full fairing bikes. The odd one out was on a Honda 450 Rebel. She had a lower seat and did not seem troubled by the wind at all.
I ride a low heavy cruiser and strong cross winds dont upset the bike.
Keeping a straight line in gale force winds can be hairy. If the wind is coming from my right, I try to stay closer to the centreline. A good strong wind will push you sideways more than you may realise.
Sooner deal with heavy rain than strong winds.

Yep. In a side wind is the only time cruisers are more aerodynamic than sports bikes.

Just remembering last January, following a dude on a Daytona up to Waiouru from Taihape. The wind was blowing like forty bastards that day as is so often the case on the Desert Road.
This guy was having way more trouble with the wind on his Daytona than I was having on the gixxer. Not sure why this should have been the case, but he had slowed wayyyy down to little more than a walking pace. 'bout the only time I've passed anyone on a Daytona...It didn't seem too bad to me - I'd ridden in much worse conditions.
Daytona is a bit taller than the gixxer I suppose...might be part of it.

My bars are 24 1/2" wide. Ones I have coming are 29" but will probably cut them a bit.

I run renthal fatbars on mine, about 30in wide, no issues with them. Gaps for filtering need to be slightly wider or slightly more careful though. Probly couldn't cut them much even if I wanted to due to switch clusters.
Depends a lot on the style of bike to what feels right to ride, one of my other ones has quite narrow angle clip ons, but being a 250gp frame it's better that way than with wider ones.

+1 to above comments on relaxed arms.
Here's another one for you. If the wind is consistently blowing from one side, a tip I got from a long distance rider (he rode the length of Africa) was to point the knee nearest to the wind sideways i.e. out into the wind. I have tried it and it does seem to help.
You just look like a dork.

In addition to (or instead of) sticking the windward knee out...shift your arse over on the seat to the windward side. That way, you are providing the windward lean, not the bike, and because the bike stays more upright it will tend to track more predictably.
+1 to relaxing. Tensing up simply transfers your wind-buffeted body movements to the bars, making the bike wander erratically.

In all of my 1 or 2 trips worth of experience riding in strong winds, I found it was best to keep a relaxed grip on the bars, hold on with your legs but let the bike do its own thing underneath you, keep in mind that the bikes designed to go straight, so if you find yourself fighting it...
but it starts feeling a bit odd when you find yourself leaning out of a corner due to the wind..
thats my 5c anyway

faster speed == wheels going around faster, which means gyroscopic forces increase and hold the bike on line.
when in doubt, give it the berries as an old friend once said was the answer to everything.
:)
i reckon it works.
AND you can tell the cop it was so you where safer and not weaving all over the place in the gusts.

not only for the gyro effect, but also because the vectorial composition of wind (front and lateral) is much more favorable...

+2 to a point. and of course there is the problem that cagers tend to slow down in the wind.

I went for a pootle to the end of the Purerua peninsula yesterday (movie release soon) & it was blowing a bastard straight over the exposed ridges. To add a little interest the last half of the road has lovely deep, fresh metal from culvert to culvert. Oh the joy! Of getting their & back without a bin..
The combination of the bike snaking around in deep gravel & getting a nasty gusting had me almost releasing the bars but still having to be pretty positive with the throttle. As long as I was on the gas I still had control even though the bike was being pushed sideways by the wind & the wheels felt as if they were on separate bikes.
Body weight central to let the bike move, not me & throttle to keep it vaguely heading were I wanted to go. I told myself heaps of times "this is fun!" I almost believe that today.

Just relax and let it go (just like the other wind problem)
+1. If you grip with your knees and keep your arms relaxed then when the wind gives you a little push you kinda just bounce straight back and carry on without issue.
If your arms become stiff and the wind pushes you then that energy gets transmitted through you into the bars, and ends up steering the bike, and you'll end up getting pushed all over the road.

It's just normal behaviour.
This is a discussion forum, not a wiki.
People will start a new thread, and ask the question. They won't generally search for the pre-existing answer.
Asking for "sensible" behaviour is like not expecting (insert description of something we blame car drivers for).
Geez, don't want to answer, don't post.

Relax your shoulders, arms and your tight grip on the handles.
Grip the tank with your knees.
Maintain a safe speed - the slower you go the more the wind is likely to affect you (or so it seems).

best one I had was on the way back from Pearoa in a strong cross wind & a large truck coming the other way on the windward side, the resulting gust blew my foot off the plate & turned my head left. Damm near blew my pillion off as she wasnt expecting it.

Haven't we had this exact same thread a bazillion time before? Have the other threads been archived, or do we just have a dumber class of KBer now, who can't use the search function?
Well advice I got on this thread helped me on windy day today. That leg thing helps a lot.
Search function is for oldies......

A few weeks ago I was blown across to the wrong side on SH16 coming up to a sweeping left hander which tightened up at the second half. The ground had gone from dry to wet and I had a lil more speed on than I was comfy wet as I was just coming from dry roads.. To my terror there was a Granvia heading straight at me. But since I'm a noob (even though I already know to loosen up on the bars, grip with the knees) I panicked and did everything wrong  Target lock on the van, froze and arms went stiff - just barely made it back to the centre line and passed with what felt like cm's to spare. Lack of experience in my case. And I drifted back out as the corner tightened up but very lucky nothing coming so I had a chance to tell myself to relax and get the fk back to the other side! I knew straight away what i had done wrong, but the panic over rode it. Definitely a code brown moment.
The victim of a very powerful survival reaction! Target Fixation!

I had a 1200 Trophy, it was a handfull in the wind. I actually avoided going out if it was blowing. The current bike a HD Roadking is brillant in the wind. I would say it only needs 25% of the effort to hold the thing on line and it is very stable when passing past a line of trees or being blown around by on coming trucks.

Not from to many beans but when riding. Went out today and got blown about a bit. Felt a bit unstable in gusts. Any tips?
Find a bus and hunker down in it's lee. Done that more than once going over the harbour bridge over the years.

Stucking your knee out on the side the wind is hitting you seems to help.
(Oops, read the rest of the thread and saw it was already mentioned, doh!)

Completely ignore it. After a few years riding you don't even notice it, or if you do notice, you're like wtf was that?? Keep your speed up and just be really ready on the bars, and just concentrate and steer. Riding in wind is almost as much fun as riding in rain!

Riding in the rain is not that run when you have plastic meeting the ground instead of rubber
Does make it challenging though

A big thing is thinking about when the wind will hit, and were it will push you - you are then ready. For example if you come out of the protection of a bank on your side of the road, you can expect a push when you get clear.
The advice about letting the bike go is fine if you have a good place to go. Found riding in the middle land on the motorway in Wellington above the ferry terminal on a light bike a bit of active management was needed. It seems to be about the windiest place in Wellington, and you do need to keep in your lane. You need to manage the bike, and try and keep clear of a cager coming through on the down wind lane.
A lot depends on the bike, the most interesting windy ride I had was going from Wellington to Napier. Going through the Wairarapa came across a curtain sider truck on it side, blown over by the wind. Two up on the bandit was still OK, a light bike would have been different - but slowed down, went faster, constantly aware of where the wind was coming from, and were it was more likely to gust. Had to be aware and manage.
It is good advice not to grip the bars like your life depended on it, but that does not mean you do need to stay in control. Good advice about weight shifting etc, but wind is just an example of where you use your ability to control the bike, and there are a whole lot of things that give you control.

Windy conditions....counter steer same as cornering, treat wind from the right same as a turn to the right, by counter steering to left. With practice and improved reaction time, the bike will move under you but your head should be traveling fairly straight. Just leaning to differing degrees.
And brings to mind riding a fast sweeper to the right with a strong cross wind from the left....turning right leaning to left mucks with the senses.

damn windy in Wellington today. Lived here all my life and don't think I've ever seen it this bad.
Saw a poor geezer on a guzzi get blown off at the lights on The Terrace this morning.
I expect the streets of Wgtn to be scattered with scooters today!!!!!

Can't be bothered reading all the previous post but for me, especially on the Rimutakas, best way to beat strong wind/gusts is to hunker down and speed up. You seem to cut through the wind and side gusts, whereas if you slow they hit you harder.
The pain in the arse on the Takas is when poofters in cars get scared and slow down, which places any following bikes in more danger.
On a side topic, has anyone else noticed how the new hill cuttings to replace Muldoons corner, near the top of the Takas have created a terrible wind tunnel? I know one rider who got blown off going through the unsealed road works section on an otherwise calm day recently.
Nothing raising the speed limit through there wont fix.
