English Police are to use new 3D laser scanning devices at the scene of serious motorway crashes. The device creates a 3D image of the site, meaning that investigators do not have to create a manual log of everything. This means that the crash scene can be reopened quickly, rather than being closed for hours as details are recorded.

The device takes a 360 degree, 3D image of the crash site, recording 30m data points down to a resolution of under a millimetre.

The 20 scanners have been purchased at a total cost of £3 million, but Roads Minister Mike Penning – a motorcyclist – felt the investment was “money well spent” when considering an estimated £1 billion loss to the economy from road closures each year, or £50,000 per hour a motorway is closed.
