A man suffered serious head injuries when a stolen motorcycle he was riding collided with a van in west Auckland today.

He was not wearing a helmet, said Constable Paul Hayward of the Serious Crash Unit.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Barrys Rd and Hepburn Rd, Glendene, shortly after midday.

The motorcyclist had been travelling up Barrys Rd when it went through a T-junction and crashed into the side of a van, Mr Hayward said.

It did not appear to have been a high-speed crash but because the rider was not wearing a helmet he had serious head injuries.

He was taken to Auckland Hospital.

The driver of the van was shocked but uninjured.

it is cases like this that as 'person' is committing a criminal act and is injured during that offence, that person should be made to cover all costs associated with that criminal act!

In this case the cost of hospitalisation, repair to the van that was damaged, assistance to the van driver if required, damage to the bike, damage to the property whilst stealing the bike, etc.

why does ACC cover injuries that criminals get while committing crime?

I think this was questioned in a thread awhile back (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/archive/index.php/t-109824.html)

A few years ago some cock escaped from prison up north, when he jumped off the wall he injured a leg (or both) - he was rewarded a lump ACC payment for his injuries.

And a while back some cock jumped into the lion enclosure at the zoo - he was rewarded ACC money for his injuries ..........

And then there was this guy who was vacuuming in the privacy of his own house and .........

To be honest i hope he doesn't actually get any permanent brain damage from this. He could be young and dumb and caught up in the wrong crowd and if it's a once off I seriously hope the owner gets reimbursed fully and the guy can learn his lesson.

Of course if he's been doing it again and again, it looks like karma may have caught up with him once and for all.

Cars have remote control engine disablement systems.

Bikes should have remote full throttle lock systems, enabled just as the thief approaches a van or truck at an intersection. (Glad the van driver was unhurt. Glad the bike thief wasnt.)

RP, less than 6 months ago I would have thought the same but since then my garage has been violated twice, $20k of bikes, tools, parts and accessories gone, and consequently I would wish all of it on them. From what I read, a few around here have also suffered similar losses so might be of like mind.

I don't wish brain injury on anyone. Quite frankly, I think so lowly of bike thieves, I don't wish them anything.

But motorcyclists are starting to actually see some of our warts.

Sometimes you have to face up to viewing genital warts though.

Mmm unfortunately I do have to look at them

And yes just because someone it a biker does not mean they are a good person, though just because person makes some shitty choices does not mean they are inherently bad person.

I would and without hesitation.
What's more, if I caught them in the act, I would have no compunction about delivering it myself.
It might be just a bike but it represents months of hard work to acquire it in the first place. Anyone who thinks they have the right to come and help themselves to months of my work will have their sense of values radically adjusted if it's within my power to do it.
This is important. I firmly believe that this sense of entitlement without equivalent effort is at the very root of the slow collapse of our society and what's more, it's self propagating.

Yep, a brain injured dickhead is even less use - but you miss the point that the person to whom the bike belongs, is the one who actually pays and suffers most - especially if they are a taxpayer!!
And, excuse my "doubting thomas" mentality, but I will bet you a dollar this is NOT a first offence, though I'm sure there will be plenty of excuses.

You might not realise this, but to many of us a bike is more than "just a possession". They are given names, get pampered, get a pat when they treat us well and we talk to our bikes.

Many years ago a g/f of mine told me I had to choose between the bike and her. "I'm gonna miss you" was my reply.

Therefore any lo-life scum who steals our bike has violated us and deserves a slow and painful death!

You can get another just like it, to me I get joy out of riding, many different bikes! Some more than others for sure but still enjoyment

I'm not saying you have no right to be extremely fucked off but not to the point of wishing hurt on people, justice yes, jail, fines etc sure but serious permanent harm?? I guess I just see it way too often, the full effects of stuff like this and I don't think a lot of the people that say they would do this or that or wish certain things fully grasp and comprehend the implications of it

And I'm glad you got rid of her, anyone who gives you stupid ultimatums like that isn't worth it

While I can understand a bike having sentimental value I still don't understand people being so caught up in a possession, and yes it is a possession, that they would go to these extremes

Any 'man' that names his bike, pampers it and pats it, should seriously consider having a cheap sex change in Thailand. Only chicks name their bikes.

Secondly...I very much doubt you're g/f left you because of the bike. It was more likely your bad sexual performance the started the ball rolling. She probably got freaked out by you pampering and patting your bike instead of her.

Re the g/f. You are partly right, it was not only the bike. It was the lifestyle. But to try and explain would be like trying to explain colours to a blind.

Gee. Once apon a time it was considered life endangering to steal a mans bike. Now we hope he didnt sustain too many injuries whilst crashing during his getaway.?

If someone steals my car, bicycle, lawnmower, breaks into my house when no one is home, Im going to be peeved, and claim insurance.

Some prick touches my kids or my bikes, im going to want their Head.

More people willing to stand up for themselves, and their family/bikes, the more some little twat is likely to think twice before tampering or stealing them.

Seems lots of PC bikers having their say lately....and the majority of older school thinking isnt online.

To be honest dude, for being a hard, non-PC bad-ass, I think you are being precious having to have someone on ignore!

Why is getting another car via insurance any different to a getting a new motorcycle?
Messing with your kids? sure I can understand that a little more

Nothing wrong with standing up for yourself

should i be ashamed of myself if i think child sex offenders deserve to have their brains blown out at close range with a large enough calibre gun??

if so shame on me...

Comparing a paedophile sex offender to someone who steals a motorcycle, not quite in the same league!

I dont consider myself hardarsed or badarsed or whatever. But yeah, am not PC either. somewhere in the middle ground Im told. And I have that fuckwit on ignore due to my inability to sort him, and my unwillingness to hear his Rascist, Sexist, Hatefull shit. - Began with his telling me he laughed when he raped my mother - perhaps thats not as serious as stealing someones bike, but still fucks me off the spineless cunt. Id like to do more than put him on ignore. But fuckwits like that, what do you do? In an online environment? I reluctantly chose Ignore.

And honestly, if someone steals some of my stuff, yeah im peeved. But its not a game stopper. But someone takes my bikes? Yes - thats serious. If you cannot understand the difference - then thats fine - just different people.

An eye for an eye - thieves better understand the importance of the item they are stealing when thinking about the vengeance that will be sought. (Dont steal a mans Bike!)

Regardless of his impending injuries

He's getting a flogging when he gets out of hospital?
