View Full Version : Does dirty air filter on carb motors induce a rich condition?

I know on a fuel injected motor that the air flow sensor will just inject less fuel for a dirty or restricted air filter but on carb bikes will it just run rich instead? Or less fuel will be sucked through the venturi for the reduced air flow too?

Yes they will run richer.

It depends on how the float chamber is vented. If it's vented to the atmosphere then it will run rich. If it's vented into the airhorn (on carb side of aircleaner) then it won't go rich....although at full throttle and max rpm it possibly will.

So what about a Keihin FCR carb? Do you know how that's vented?

As a general rule ... yes ..

It's all good ! Don't worry be happy ! servicing is for rosi's !

OP think through your question. Its not really rocket science is it? less air same amount of fuel and..... Incidently even FI engines have their limitations when it comes to clogged filters.

Frosty is right about efi motors too, they mostly use a very simple efi system that doesn't compensate for jack. Our bike Systems are very basic.

Ah,efi engines use an airflow meter of some sort - it measures how much air the engine is using and gives the appropriate amount of fuel. The condition of the airfliter makes no difference to fuel economy.

Ummmmm, why not just clean or replace the airfilter?

Next thing, you'll be saying regular oil changes area good thing...

Real bikes like MVX250's don't need oil changes mate. Get with the program.

For the MVX, don't you just replace the word oil for piston?

Nope. Done 144kms on it since the rebuild, it's reliable as.

Must have been an expert rebuild as that's more than they did from new!

Sorry I didn't think it's that simple and thought that it would use less fuel for less air. I thought carbs draw fuel according to the air flow through the carb into the venturi sucking the fuel out of the jets, hence me wondering if the mixture remains the same despite less air going in from an obstructed or dirty filter. I never thought fuel is just pumped in at a certain amount and that I could see would cause a rich mixture.
