Key ora tin a cocoa!
Pick up me new (to me) wheels on Friday and part of the excitement about that is the plan to do a wee solo jaunt around the top of the SI with my camera and a good book.
I'll have 5 days which will need to include the ferry rides.

Excellent. Springtime.
Don't know much about the top end, I'm from the deep south. Nice trip up the Wairau valley to St Arnaud though. Add Glenhope and Nelson for a nice day trip.
Interested in a bit of exploring up into golden Bay one day...

Today I purchased my second edition New Zealand Motorcycle Atlas :woohoo: and started to plan out my route and solo trip details in more...well, detail!
Planning to depart on the morning of my birthday to return 5 days later.
I've just booked in for two nights in Hanmer springs - I have always wanted to go to this hot pool mecca in the south! :) I plan to spend two days getting there and one day getting back to Picton in time to catch a ferry.
Route "subject to change' is:
Day One: Ferry from Wellington to Picton then ride Picton to Collingwood
Day Two: Collingwood to Westport
Day Three & Four: Hanmer for two nights...hot pools mmmmmmmmmmmm
Day Five: Hanmer to Picton (lunch in Kaikoura to say hello to the whales) jump on the Ferry and then home :)
Twill be an awesome journey. I'll be packing super lite. Just spare undies and polyprops, my slippers a book and my camera....what bliss!
Feel free to let me know of any good spots along the way for pics or food or anything else of note that I should check out along my travels :)
For now it will be head down and bum up until HOLIDAY TIME!

If you have time when your in westport: Go and have a look up at the old Denniston coal mine, the views, history are worth the trip up the hill. If you had a day in westport I would say head up to Karmea as the road is a good mix of straights and hill's.
when heading for Hanmer, head south on the coast road to Greymouth, with a stop at pancake rocks on the way, then head back to Reefton and over to Hanmer Springs.
You'll go past about 2-3 seal colony's on your route if your into that sort of thing, one on the point just south of Westport (20 min walk), One out at the end of the road on the Kaikoura peninsula, and if your lucky, one at the Ohau waterfall about 20min north of kaikoura, and a ten Minute walk each way. This is baby seals playing in a fresh water pool below a waterfall See Video.

Second the Denniston trip, have spent a lot of time up there fossicking about, amazing place with an amazing history, not to mention the view. Many women would arrive in Westport by boat from Ireland, once up there they never got to go back down such was the remoteness of the place back then.

It's a damn shame they ruined the ride up there though.
Have you bought a monster Numero Uno?
If so what one and pics please.
You'll love the ride no matter which way you go and if you are stopping at the Pancake Rocks try to get there towards full tide.If the sea is running the sights and sounds are amazing.(Wear your wet weather gear though).
Hamner Springs is fantastic. If you are financial enough go on the Four Wheel Bike ride.More fun then a barrel full of naked girls.(Well nearly).

Forget Collingwood ... stay in Takaha ... or just go there ... and back to Motueka. The road following the Motueka river down to Kohatu is nice too.
A detour into Lake Rotoiti (St Arnaud) is well worth the effort. 20 min's off the road to Murchison ... Although the road to Lake Rotoiti ... via Tophouse is fun on a bike (weather permitting)
A visit to the "formally" The Blackball Hilton (near Greymouth)... worth the effort ... and a shortcut to the Greymouth/Reefton highway too ...
The Reefton / Springs junction road is awesome ... but watch out for the 15km corner at the Springs end ... About 20 km's past Springs is Maruia Springs ... worth a stop for the beautiful hot pools (Do the private ones)
