Feckin computers. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c227/terrano1/emoticons/comp26.gif
Where the Fuck are all my e-mails and settings and internet favorites etc gone? I know they are still where they were in the hard drive, but why the fuck can't the computer see them now???? How do I restore them on thunderbird, outlook express and firefox/google chrome? I've tried copy and pasting the files on thunderbird, but it still can't see them. I've tried the import tool, but it can't see the folder, outlook just plain can't see it even though it belongs to it, and thunderbird will only import from outlook, which is no fucken use coz that's jens stuff, and it will still only import the e-mails, and nothing else. I tried re-setting up t bird, but it won't recognize my password, which If it isn't right, I've forgotten.
How the fuck do I fix this crap, and why the fuck does it happen in the first place???? http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c227/terrano1/emoticons/aanewbsod.gif
Thanks.

Virus? Is there one that causes the mail folders to be assigned as "hidden"?

Can you see if they are set to hidden?

Nope, un hid them. I can find them, I just can't get the stoopid fucken thing to read them.
It happened last time I replaced the motherboard/cpu too...couldn't figure it out then either....

Ok, so to start, is the operating system the same? Usually replacing items like the motherboard is going to really annoy the operating system. The OS hasn't been re-installed has it?

I'd be doing a search, for *.xyz, where xyz is the file extension you're after... make sure you search system files, hidden folders etc. I have used Thunderbird very little, but did some stuff for Mom, and it was quite happy to let me mess it around and replace it's files with other ones etc.

Would prefer the steps you did to fix the computer in the beginning, to try to understand how it could have gone wrong?

I might be able to help. Stuck indoors in front of the computer anyway. I need to know old OS/new OS and file extensions for starters. Same as they been telling you.

Replaced cpu/motherboard/hard drive, but have retained the old h/d as well. New install of XP onto new hard drive. Old h/d still has everything as it was. I've tried re-installing thunderbird on the new drive and copy/pasting the file off the old one, no go. I've tried running it from the old h/d and still no go.
Sounds like the fresh os install is the problem. Why?
What's a file extension?

File extensions are the 3 characters after the name of the file. Like death.doc where the extension is the doc part indicating it's a document or acdc.mp3 where the file extension is mp3.

Sounds to me like the data you have may have been corrupted. Sorry

I may be mistaken but i thought Firefox/Mozilla bookmarks were saved in jsn files same as text. Chrome should be able to import those, also.

The problem is, because firefox/thunderbird won't recognize them, nor will anything else

install all the software new do not copy from old HDD, then once installed try "import" usually under "file" (I think???) then point to the old HDD ver, it should theoretically be able to import the old shit from there.

Kind of difficult to help like this. Are you specifying a path when you import from Firefox to the old jsn file. Have you opened the old jsn file and checked contents? Try saving export to the same folder and see if you can open a new file. If you want help would PM or messenger be easier?

Tried that too, using the tool from thunderbird....it won't import from mozilla to mozilla... or at least I couldn't get it to...also tried a toll from mozillas website with the same amount of success.
Same problem with outlook express, tell it to import, then try to point it at the file but it cannot see it, even though it's there....

I haven't tried too much with firefox, it's more thunderbird and outlook that I'm really concerned about. I think with firefox I just tried the import 'button' and it will only import from explorer....
I can download msn or something, but I'm at work for another couple of hours....

Cheers, I'll see if I can boot it up off the old system then....wish me luck.... It would only run in safe mode last time I ran it....that's sorta where it all started... :shit:

With Thunderbird and Mozilla, let it create new profiles, don't mess with that.

Once the new profiles are created, shut the relevant program down, and copy the new files to somewhere else, inserting the old files (they should have the same file names from memory). I did this with Mom's PC and it worked quite well.

If you're using the correct files etc (you're sure?) and it's still not working, then it is possible the data is corrupt. A chkdsk and/or defrag miiiight help.

From memory, on XP Thunderbird stores the data in the hidden folders under your user profile
c:\documents and settings\USERNAME\Application Data
c:\documents and settings\USERNAME\Local Settings

Copy the data across and also the profile.ini in the thunderbird subfolder.

Vioala...all your emails will appear.

Piece of piss.

Now set-up an IMAP mail server (I like Gmail) and use some of the address book add-ons to keep everything synced properly.

Another great reason to move to the cloud. This scenario would never happen with Gmail. Why on earth anybody wants to have local email dependent on the vagaries of a PC and an ISP is beyond me. Google Documents, Google Calendar, Springpad, Avast. I'm never going to buy software ever again.

The only decent thing that can be done with Internet Explorer is downloading Chrome.
