View Full Version : Bike sale unease

Guys,
I have a bit of a dilemma. I have a bike on trademe for sale. just today i received a text from somebody in Malaysia wanting it and giving us a contact email address which i duly emailed. They have come back saying yes they want the bike, at the price i am asking. They will pay for it, before it is shipped, and how do I want to be paid. Now this is the problem. I am a tad uneasy about this as it could be a scam and they are just phishing for bank details. So my question is, if I do decide to go ahead, how safe is a bank draft? I am loathe to give a bank account number, so thought a bank draft that is cleared before I let the bike out of my hands, would be the safest option. Any suggestions or constructive comments duly welcome.

It is a scam, don't send them anything! I've had a few of these texts and got one today as well. You will definitely lose your money and your bike if you go along with it.

Mate, to me, it sounds like you are trying to sell it for more than its worth.
Otherwise - why would you even consider entering into a bargain which even you must realise is likely to end in tears. (or extra work for no gain, and having to relist the bike).
Put that malaysian number on ignore.
Drop the price on your bike.

Unless you have signed a authority form for a direct debit, they cannot do anything with your account number except put money in it. (barring of course, if they get your password/PIN/etc..)
if you wanted to be totally safe, use paypal. They would send the money to you through paypal's system without knowing your bank account number.

Paypal is really only good for buying. The buyer has all the power. In my experience anyway.

Get them to put the money into you account
And wait a few days - like a week.
And if the $$$ are still there you might just have a genuine buyer.
About a likely as finding a factory 4-into-1 and Yoshi can for a pan-head Harley...
Absolutely a scam, do nothing, tell them nothing , apart from f-ing off
If you don't believe me then ask yourself why on earth would anyone in Malaysia, a land of a million cheap motorcycles, ever need to shop for a second hand bike as far a way as NZ? If you can't find a buyer in Malaysia for a second hand bike in NZ try running adverts in Nigeria.
Oh, and Malaysia is a close second place for scams and fraudulent bank drafts behind Nigeria.

Yep, I'm with the others. Unless your selling a bike that is super rare, or for $10k less than you should be, why would anyone from Malaysia feel the need to buy a bike of someone in NZ? Just odd, and not worth the hassle.

Tell him congratulations he won a competition to be the 100th buyer of a bike this month, to get his million dollars all he has to do is send the money for the bike and shipping plus a further 30% for the legal fees to release the million dollars to a non New Zealand resident.

Totally wrong sorry! Paypal is exactly what they tried to use to scam me. Unless you can log into your bank account and see the money and then re-check in 24hrs, then it is a scam. But this deal is so obviously a scam.

The only way you could get away with using PayPal would be to have them say something like "I am paying for goods that I have already received in person. There was no shipping information, because I picked up the item locally. I am happy with my transaction and am now paying for something I owe. I give up my right to chargeback since I have already received the goods"
Even then, I wouldn't recommend it...

Paypal is commonly used by scammers because it's bloody easy to use with anonymity.
It's a shit way to receive payment though because paypal will always reverse a payment (to you, the seller) at the the drop of a hat if;
the credit card used by the buyer is stolen or fraudulent
the buyer complains that the goods were not received (or not received in the expected condition)
if paypal themselves suspect the transaction is dodgy/illegal in nature
or paypal just decide not to pass on payment (see what happened to wikileaks)
Paypal pride themselves on having terrible customer service and their loyalty is to whoever is actually sending money using their system. So, credit companies get the most say, then the buyer, then the seller.
Friends don't let friends use paypal.
Western Union on the other hand is real good, they never reverse anything. Just make sure you actually receive the cash in your hand before sending the goods. There are heaps of money-order form generators on the internet that they send you to make you believe that they have sent the money.

Look at it this way, you want rid of the bike anyway don't you ?
Just think of it as an expensive lesson if you even think this is close to being legit. Think it through. And whatever you do, as the post above says, do not believe any links that the guy sends you.
If it was me I would tag along for a bit and wind the guy up for a laugh. See if he'll throw in a shrunken skull or his sister.

The paypal one's a common one. They'll ask for your paypal details, then tell you they'll paypal the asking price and sort out the shipping themselves. You'll get a seemingly legit email from a paypal email address saying that such and such is the shipping co, confirming that they've received eg. $12000 for the bike and $800 shipping fees. Could you please refund the $800 shipping to bank acc # xyz and they'll begin transport proceedings.
Get a couple of those a week here. Always gets a giggle.

There is fuck all the cunts can do with your bank account details (but I wouldn't want to tempt fate if unsure). Most likely is they'll follow up with some dodgy request or put some money in to give you confidence then try to ream your ringpiece until it prolapses.
Jeremy Clarkson published his bank account details saying the same thing as a challenge. Funny thing was there was a law in the UK allowing unauthorised withdrawals up to 500 quid direct to charities and he ended up donating Diabetes UK

I still can't believe you thought this might be a genuine offer, but at least you had the sense to ask for other peoples opinions, and god knows KB is the place to go for getting other folks opinions.:innocent:

Andrew needs to ship my 1988 250cc bike to Malaysia urgently - maybe there is a shortage? How should I reply to his e-mail?
Hello,
Thanks for the swift reply, there is no doubt about it, i like the
bike and I am pleased with the price but I want you to get back to me
with the pictures and all dents on the bike if there are any because i
am not local. I am presently in Malaysia on business and could not
come over to check it out,but no worries as i am willing to handle the
pick up of this bike through a legitimate shipping agent that has
their headquarter situated here in Malaysia, it will be picked up
after payment, so i really need to know the mode of payment
so that we can proceed thereafter cos i really need this bike urgently.
I'd like to know certain things too
Does the bike have any mechanical disabilities presently?
What is your reason for selling it?
I'm sorry, just want to be sure about the sale before i proceed.

are you aware of how hard it is to import a motorcycle into Malaysia?
unless I am hugely mistaken,its a scam
best way to flush them out is to start talking really technical to them about the bike,99% of Malaysians have never seen a bike over 200cc let alone ridden one.
Tell them you have a friend in Singapore who will pop over to visit them before the bike is shipped, just to be sure everything is OK.
I bet you never hear from them again

My Reply:
Hi Andrew,
I am actually the second owner of this bike, I inherited it from my uncle 5 years ago when he tragically came down with hypergonadism. The reason for me selling the bike is that I am also beginning to suffer the symptoms of my uncles affliction and believe that it may be attributed to riding a bike that is too dense for me, as well as the fact that it is lightly haunted.
I don't think there is anything mechanically wrong with the bike but it may need its power-bands replaced to get a WOF here in New Zealand (I am not sure if you need this in Malaysia?). I had it running fine yesterday though there was a faint buzzing each time I turned it off which concerned me but upon closer inspection I found it was just the wasps is the exhaust. You can keep them if you would like, I think they increase the bike's overall horsepower as long as you make sure to use non-synthetic engine oil.
Sorry, I can't send you photos at the moment because I am in Australia and my older brother who is looking after my bike doesn't handle anything that may contain lithium due his religious beliefs. I can assure you that cosmetic damage is minimal though aside from the crack in the front fender and a problem with the left mirror whereby it only reflects in black and white.
Kind regards,
Jonathan

As others have already said, this is definately a scam, if they send an e amil address you can try and google it and you will more than likely get a hit back. Do not give any bank details out. A friend of mine had a similar situation via TM over a golf cart and the proepsctive buyer was based in Nigeria. There is a web site which lists various scams sorry I cannit remember the name of the page but I will have a look for it.

This is also the only major buying scam that google has turned up.

No more details needed, clearly a scam - as mentioned by someone else, no one in Malaysia would buy a bike from NZ. These scams have been mentioned numerous times in these forums and all over the internet.
