Not my R1 as its a yamaha and they dont break down
But the young fella brought his first bike, a moped a 2 stroker and today he finally got his license and is chewing at the bit to have a ride and the fucking thing wont start
so far I have
replaced the plug, checked for spark
checked compression (finger over the hole method)
checked fuel (its getting fuel as the plug comes out wet
and now I dunno what to look at.
Any ideas
any keen mechanics want a box of piss ?
thanks in advance for the help

Im a retard when it comes to bike mechanics, butttt possibly a battery, I had a similar problem with my cb125 bucket, had spark but no fire, replaced the battery and it fired to life,
that or give it the old school bumpy bump start

Is it fresh fuel?
Battery is good, Fuel is two weeks old and 98 oct
do these mopeds have fuel pumps ?
I actually got it going after shaking the fuck out of it and starting it on a slope, after about 50 attempts it went

If you've got spark and compression and fresh fuel then the only thing I can add is if it's been sitting around for a while is it's possibly flooded the crank-case.
I don't understand these moped thingies but if you can push it around in gear then whip out the plug put it in gear and push the fucker around until you have a coronary.
You should see a shit load of fuel get pumped out the plughole and when it stops...or you have a heart attack...clean the plug and try from there.
Also adjust or replace fuel cock and/or floats.

The beauty of a twostroke Quasi is it's basically just a pump.
As long as the crank/piston is turning over it will pump the fuel out of the crankcase through the sparkplug hole
Auto gearbox's are the devils work and i don't want anything to do with em.

ok, I actually did that and turned it over for a while with no plug in, I wonder if that was the solution

Well shit Bret, or Brent or whatever. Don't spare the detail will you?
Are you a newebe here?
A 2 stroke you say? geee well now it's clear. oh its a moped, whatever that means.
So it was going before? or no idea? c'mon.
So how does the choke operate? Does it start ok with engine start? (indicating a choke issue).
what is it? history?

The R1 taking it's name of course from it's predecessor the YR1
http://www.classicyams.com/brochures/brochures/yamaha-yr1-2/c-3/c-brochures.html
in 1967 a far more ground breaking machine & if course more advanced even now as having the correct number of strokes. Almost 45 years ago & hp/litre hardly progressed.

I would have said drain the 98 and use 91 octane. Can make quite the difference.
Keep it in mind if troubles persist.

really 2 strokes run better on lower octane ?
Racey Rider
17th July 2011, 08:17
Competition two strokes would have reason to run higher octane If There Motors Are Built For It!
But your talking Moped.
Unless it's had compression work done, or spark advance, it's designed to run on 91.
91 will certainly help it Start easier as the flame front burns faster.
and if the motor is old, it's propabley down on compression anyway.

Ok, well there hasnt been any mods done to it at all, its a TOPFUN branded scooter (yes chinese but looks decent quality)
I filled it up with 98 for the young fella perhaps that wasnt a good idea, as since then the problem started !
engine has done 5000kms to btw

NO, no, no you're not concluding the thread yet surely! No-one has been insulted about their heritage/choice of bike/religion yet!
Here is my 1st bike experience;
1, buy an old run down RT360 yamaha.
2, test ride to be sure it goes
3, get it home and ride it for about 10 min until it stops
4, spend weeks trying to restart the thing, where everynow and then it will fire out the exhaust with a huge long blue flame. Alternately it will kick back like a bastard, jarring every joint in your 14yr old leg
5, finally get up enough courage to start removing things to establish cause, starting with carburettor and culminating in flywheel where;
6, find that flywheel to crank taper fit is more worn than a hookers g string. This has in turn caused the woodruff key, and subsequent replacements, to shear to the point where someone has had to loctite the flywheel on. So it has been revolving bit by bit on the crank meaning that timing is out but every now and then it comes right round again to the point where it fires up briefly or is in the right place to fire up a flooded exhaust pipe full of petrol, scaring, literally, the living shit out of the chooks!
7, by now the cheese like structure of the kickstart shaft housing is worn and starts to crack rendering the whole lot into the parts bin.
Oh joy!
NEXT!!!!!

If you emptied your house out of chinese made products how much would be left smart arse?
however, it has better brakes and better rubber than the Yamaha Jog and the Suzuki thing, the Honda seemed overpriced.
So yes the bike is a better deal and was a better over all spec than the jappas, had more storage also and better seat.
Headlights are brilliant so Im happy with the young fellas purchase.
There is no problem now, but I will get the carbs checked out tomorrow.

Im not going to say a single thing about how that comment reflects your decision making processes....which led to being happy with a chinese bike.... Not a sound.

theres your problem right there
someone told the chinese that pushing a moped around for ages was considered"FUN"in western society
so clearly they decided to make one that was an absolute asshole to start, therefore providing those crazeee westeners with "TOPFUN'
Get a Honda sticker for the tank,it might help
