As a few of you know, I managed to get a stone hole in my radiator in the weekend. I got a call back from the bike shop today saying that they can't fix the hole. They have to replace the whole damn thing, that’s all good and well. The thing is it $1300 for a new radiator, I need to find a second hand radiator. Because I'm not a magician, and there is no way I can pull that kind of money from any orifice from my body.
So I need some help locating a second hand radiator.

How big a hole is it? I've heard that some radiator specialists can patch these to quite a good standard!

Go see a radiator repair shop (or tell the bike shop to go see them). They can put a new core onto the existing header tanks etc.

Yeah this is true... but the only reason they cant fix it is because they cant garentee the work without flushing with a pressurised cleaner because of the curve...
Go to another shop with the pressure cleaner... get the leak fixed, get it flushed and hope it dont leak again... a stone went clean through mine on the Coro ride 5/6/05  done 1000mls since and not a drip, saved me alot of money.

Will check tomorrow for ya
That stinks CLS. Must have been a rock if they can't weld it up. Did the same to my CBR929 and Motorad closed off the damaged line (fin or whatever you call each of those thin plates that make up the core) with a quick weld. Cheap fix, worked without any probs and didn't alter the running temp. You must have done more damage than most. Don't like your chances of finding a second hand one in NZ but try Victoria M/C Wreckers in Australia. Email : vicwreck@iinet.net.au I've used them and good service and reasonable prices.
Doubt the 03-04 model will work because I think they increased its size and curve for 2005
Good luck

will do Going to go to a radiator store tomorrow and ask some questions.
Oh dear, modern bikes eh? If it's curved you won't get a recore, only a complete radiator.Because of Consumer Rights no radiator repairer will go near it...you'll be back next week saying he did a bad job because it's leaking again, not worth the hassle on their part.Ah,an air cooled bike has a few advantages don't you think?

Suggestion from my husband, try Barry Senn from Pukekohe Radiators, 092386383. He has seen him repair some pretty mangled motor cross radiators,or John at Smythe and McCord(was Smythe and Yates) in Cambridge. Good luck

dude I had the exact same problem when a stone went thru the radiator on my TL. Took said radiator out... down to this dude who specialises in aluminium radiators, and he stripped it (was painted black), welded the one little row of widgets shut that had the hole, then pressure tested it, repainted it shiney black, then I put it back in the bike with some fresh coolant... hey presto.. just like a bought one.
The temperature gauge doesnt even go past 82 degrees either(in normal conditions) so one less row of widgets didnt make a difference.
ps.. i was told by a reputuble bike shop..."she's poked mate... you'll never fix that bastard"... guess who didnt get my $1300... repair was 200 and odd dollars.
Edit: I see your in Wellywood. If it gets no where you could courior it up here and it would still be worth the cost.
Damn I'm going to try and fix it.......................

Call Mt Eden. I heard a word that an 05 was recently written off. Give 'em a buzz and find out the condition of the rad. Not sure if it was damaged or not. The bike was more rear damage from what I've heard. Could be worth a shot 09 303 1960

THERES A RADIATOR SHOP IN NEWTON AUCKLAND THAT CAN EPOXY AND LEAK TEST ANY HOLE IN ANY RADIATOR , DONT GET IT WELDED THEY WILL ONLY FUCKIT UP, I HAD A GSXR1000 EPOXYED FOR $30 AND 2 YEARS LATER ITS FINE , THEY DID MY KAWASAKI RACE BIKE AND THEN I CRASHED IT BENDING THE RADAITOR EVEN MORE BUT IT DIDNT LEAK, I FIXED A TLR RADIATOR IN AN EMERGENCY AND IT LASTED OVER A YEAR THEN MY MATE SOLD IT

Is that like RadWeld? Can you get that here? It's great stuff for small holes in radiators - basically its loads of metallic particles in aliquid form mixed with some other fluidtypegunk. It congeals when it comes into contact with air and blocks up holes. So you empty it into your radiator as per the destructions.
I'm not sure how long you should ride around with it in for, as I was led to believe it was only a temporary fix - but I used RadWeld once on an old bike of mine and it was fine for almost a year before I sold the bike.

Nick. Pull the radiator, take it in to Wellington Motorcycles, book it in and ask to have Hayden to fix it. He's done his once and Johanns twice.
Fucken magician when it comes to welding aluminium, you'll have to let them know you realise there's no garauntees to its effectiveness but it's worth a shot.
Then, go to Repco or Super Cheap, get yourself some alluminium mesh and build a fucken gaurd!

This has sufficiently scared me enough to consider going home and making a radiator guard for mine... jeez, $1300!! Cops shouldn't worry about demerit points and bullshit fines, they should just put a stone through the radiator... With my priorities at the moment, that'd get me off the road for a year!!
If the 2004 radiator fits the 2005 636, then look here.

otherwise, keep your eye out on ebay. They'll be bound to have one up soon.

A repair - but not a reputable repair....if it had overheated your engine would you be down there hammering on his door to pay for your engine? With Consumer rights no radiator shop would go near that sort of repair and put their name on the job.Sure, they can be fixed - but you walk away, and stay away.

RADIATORS, Alloy Repairs For Motorcycles, I can fix most bent, twisted or leaking Alloy Radiators. I can also fix Alloy Oil coolers. Wheel & Frame NZ, 39 Lake Street, Cambridge, Contact John Yeates, Phone 07-827- 6688, Fax 07-827-8907.
I've used this guy to fix a bent and busted radiator. It came back like a new one and cost about $200 as I recall. I'd highly reccomend John for any radiator repairs.

the first time I heard it happenning in Kawasaki.....it happened on R series alot, though. I managed to punch 2 R1s and 1 R6 in the past.
Nothing that a dab of superglue can't fix. That's my advice. (disclaimer: only works if the hole is small)

The thing is it $1300 for a new radiator, .
I havn't read this whole thread but have to wonder what is going on NZ$1300 here yet the same Radiator out of the US is around NZ$750..funny how quite a few things have RRP based on the low exchange rate of a few years ago..i am in no doubt the dealer network is creaming it!!! ???..funny how the Kawasaki radiator is $1300 then you take that current US$529 (NZ$750) cost and do the exchange on the super low rate of a few years back of around 41c on the $ and you get...yep $NZ1290 ???
Another case..someone posted on TLP about the RRP of over NZ$1000 for a TL1000S radiator (they cost that back when the exchange rate was super low)... the same radiator from the US is NZ$643 ??? ..on the old rate, yep you got it,over $NZ1000...tell me that is not a scam even on a 20 % error margin?

the 05 bike is new from the rubber up. Virtually nothing from previous bikes will fit the 05..
I wanted to make a guard for my bike for ages. Just not found any decent mesh. Where's the best place? I've been to Repco (couple of different stores) and they sell the mesh for boi racers, but it's not wide enough to fit, and it's fukin expensive to make a crap job of it (I know, the cost of that isn't as much as a rad..)..
anyone know where's good in Auckland for some decent mesh?

I've fixed a few in the past with arildite(?two pack epoxy) and they seem to last fine.
The best repair I've seen was a couple of years ago when we were riding to the gp in aussie, one of the boys holed his TLs rad and we found some shithouse barn they they called a workshop, the guy whipped it off and ally soldered up the hole in no time :niceone:
