The shuttle is about 5 mins from leaving orbit on it's last flight.

I stayed home from school to watch the first test flight of the Enterprise. I put Thus Spake Zach Zarathustra on the Fountain 3-in-1 and cranked it. The Enterprise touched down at the climax of that evocative piece.
it's the end of an era all right, but I really think that focusing on unmanned space operations is a mistake. Yes, computers are more powerful, yes decision making algorithms have become very sophisticated, but show me the robot who can navigate in 3D with a sextant and a pad and pencil and I'll prove it's CGI nonsense.
I'd much rather spend money getting Buzz Aldrins and Jim Lovells into space.

If my memory works right, me and a friend got up early in the morning to watch the first lift-off.
So watching the last landing, for sure. Feeling a bit "odd".

Awesome.
Announcer tried to say something like "we are trying to imagine what it's like for you", in reply to the Commander talking about the plasma during re-entry.
But he flubbed the words three times.
The Commander simply replied "that's easy for you to say".

I remember watching Columbia's first landing...
I remember staying up to watch the first liftoff, only to have launch aborted and another attempt the next day.
I guess it was still under warranty back then!
Never known to land at night before?
They did it quite often.
