So, Friday 22 July is National Poetry day.
There are events all over the country, but very few poems are likely to deal with bikes. This is your chance to change that!
Glenn Colquhoun once compared Shakespeare and a Suzuki in the immortal lines ''Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?'/ A man revving his motorcycle outside a woman's house'
What have you got? A rhyming couplet? A haiku? An acrostic poem, perhaps?
I'll start us off:
"Ax100 Haiku"
kick start, throttle, choke
my bike says ring a ding ding
clouds of thick blue smoke

A limerick:
I ride an '08 'blade,
despite how much I paid,
around the hood,
the ride is good,
like I've just been laid.
I once had an itch for a cruiser
Till a friend of mine said "what a loser"
"If you ride that round town
You'll have fags all around
Hoping to suck on your Kooza!!"

I rode a friend's upright
everything was going alright
until some bees
flew into my knees
maybe that wasn't so bright

Rose are gay,
Honda's are too,
Why do people keep buying CBR600's,
and paint them Yamaha blue?
I thought I'd write you a poem,
but motorbike names don't rhyme.
So when I try to insert "Ducati".
"Mechanic" is all that comes to mind.
So we are left with this dilemma,
of how to put CT110 on the page,
but for god sakes you Harley riders,
Don't forget to wave!
Triumph are a lovely brand,
but the owners seem such wanks,
probably because on the track,
Suzuki leave them spanked.
I should go, time to sign off,
its been a burst of fun,
but I have pulled apart a Kawasaki,
AND NOW THE BASTARD WON"T RUN!

Here's one for my bike, Poppy
Panic attack red
Over optimistic speedo
Pollutor number one
Practically non-existent brakes
Yes, I ride 'that thing'

Shall I compare thee to a bucket bike?
Thou art more shiny and less temperate:
Rough winds do shake us more than we would like
And your top speed means we are often late,
Sometime your gears have a mind of their own,
And often you do sulk on colder days,
Drum brakes don’t work, that much you have shown,
And your blue smoke leaves roads engulfed in haze.
Even if your speedo over-reads a jot
You’re cheap to fill, not thirsty on the gas,
You engine runs, your pipes get really hot -
You’ve well and truly scarred this biking lass,
So long as you have oil and gas and me,
So long we’ll ride, forever chasing speed.
So now it's time to break out the sonnets... where's GIJoe when you need him?

A Haiku.
Sturdy and strong, rolling.
Heavy, Cumbersome and titanic, still.
Behemoth, my bike.

On the old Munch Mammut 1500
A magnificent bike was the Munch
Of cc's it had, oh a bunch
And the view from the seat
Was Germanically neat
But a Z1 would eat it for lunch
