Ok, so Meanie failed to start this thread so I'll do it. Slapped some PR3's on the Connie today so let's see how they go eh?

What did you get out of the 2's - apparently the 3's last longer and stick better!

The tread looks kind of weird.

I stuck a pair of PR3s on my Tiger a couple of weeks back. I had read a negative story about them breaking up in extreme heat conditions. This is not something that could ever be a problem in New Zealand:lol:

My experience in wet and windy conditions is that they are heaps better than PR2s (which were previously the best tyre I had ever had). They might have a weird tread pattern however the grip and road holding has truly excellent in all conditions (so far).

A few more ks will give me a better idea, but so far so good

Whey hey - going to follow this thread with interest. Looking at the PR3 for the '14 when I wear out the Diablo Strada on there now.

The tread looks kind of weird.

I heard that generally speaking they were lasting about 5% longer, grip was about the same in the dry but in the wet they were a good step grippier.

So ideally you're looking for 11-12,000+ clicks, will be interesting. I guess we'll find out in about a month...:msn-wink::laugh:

Yep, 12k is my target. If they do that and offer other benefits over the 2's then there is a new standard. If they go longer then that will be the icing on the cake. Really hoping not to repeat my Angel experience...

Might take a tad longer than a month - but will either be on a new set or back to PR2's by say Marchish last year...

worth following Mr Chips thread on cupping developing on his fairly new tyre.

I have cupping issues on my PR2 (front after 10k) and hoped PR3 would solve all my problems.......

What pressures are you running and how do you ride?

42 rear and 42 front (although have tried 40 on front to get bit more grip over winter). Don't ride very hard ..mix of commuting, quick blasts at weekend and fully loaded trip round East Cape at Easter which did wear tires significantly. Have 11k on the tires so far which I am really pleased about.

Truth is they do tend to cup as you put it but i'm having a better run this time (although it's early days in this tires like as yet) as i'm running it with a little more pressure than in the past. I wouldn't let it worry you too much, 11k is quite reasonable for a big bike like yours.

thanks for that sarge

sorry if off-topic but does cupping cause any major problems as the tyre wears or is it best to replace once that starts?

Not to the best of my knowledge it doesn't, just wear it out and replace. Sounds like theRoad 3's are worth a look when the time comes.

I'd read all of the negatiive stuff before buying.

The problem seems to be that in certain environments, the tyre wears out before the tread does. I have only previously experienced cupping on very old tyres and took it as part of the perishing process.

The PR3 is an excellent tyre and if I can get 10k out of them before they are knackered, I'll be quite happy

Reading all this and other threads about PR2's with great interest. I currently have a set of PR2's on my Bandit and about half of my riding is two up. We're not lightweights, both of us together will be around 200kg plus luggage. My problem with the PR2's is that we are wearing out the softer sides on the rear very quickly with the tyre at it's maximum pressure of 42PSI, plenty of thread left in the centre of the tyre. Reading on the Michelin site I see that both the PR2 and the PR3 are available in a "B" version which has stiffer sidewalls to increase mileage on heavily loaded bikes. Have any of you run or are running this "B" version of the PR3 (or PR2)? I'd be interested to hear if these don't wear as much on the sides.

I'm riding from Coromandel up to Drury Tyres on Tuesday to have some PR3's fitted to the Street Triple. I've covered 10000 hard Km on Avon Storm 2 Ultra's and the rear is down to the wear bar. The Storms have been everything I'd come to expect from a long association with Avons, but time to compare them with something else.

Why??? Apart from curiosity, price was probably the tipping point. Last year, I paid $550 for a set of Storms. I've just been quoted $650 for their replacements but the PR3 set are only $600, fitted and balanced. Not so one-eyed that I'm not prepared to try something else!

I went from PR2s to PR3s. The difference was huge, however most of this can be attributed to the fact that I have gone from almost bald tyres to new fully treaded ones.

The most remarkable trait of PR3s (for me) is the improved handling in wet conditions.

Good luck :)

That's where the Storm Ultras scored for me - simply outstanding. There's probably little to choose between any of the major brands other than what you get used to.

Cheers :Punk:

Exactly right - new anything feels better than worn old tyres. I still haven't done enough k's (too much playing in the gravel on the DL lately) on the 3's to really offer much of an opinion other than they are better than my old worn 2's . I did ride on some wet roads (wet but not raining at the time) last weekend and had no complaints. Looking forward to a decent ride to really get to know them.

I think that's pretty right to Geoff. I'd still be keen to try some Metzlers at some stage (used to like them on my Bandits) but so far PR2's are the tyre for the Connie with Pirelli Stradas coming in second. I would not touch a Pirelli Angel again and never consider a Bridgestone.

Now to get some miles on the 3's...
