zxr250 rebuild

Hi Im back at the forums and i have my zxr 250 in bits and am planning on making a low budget street fighter when i put it back together is there any way of milking a few more hp out of the engine while its out of the bike without spending heaps?

You have a 20yr old bike which makes nearly 160hp/litre... what do you think?

A free-er flowing exhaust, flatslide carbs, and some porting. You probably can extract some more ponies but it won't be cheap by any means.

Spend the money on better suspension. Won't increase your horsepower but you'll get a bit more use out of what you already have.

porting the exhaust wont be too hard actually. I was thinking if theres any way of advancing the timing a slight bit and also i heard theres a power restrictor somwhere... Just a bit interested in seeing how much potential these little motors have

Spend the effort instead on losing weight. that will make it go much faster. a 55kg rider on a zxr250 flies...

Personally I wouldn't bother a hell of a lot with the engine side of things. Not much to gain and far too much to spend. Besides, a bunch of engine parts arn't available anymore and will get worse as each month passes. Especially if it is the A model. The C model is not so bad.

If you want to "feel" more power as opposed to adding a lot, my best recommendation is to get yourself a 1/4 turn throttle.

Some of the extras on the ZXR:

Braided brake lines front and rear
1/4 turn throttle
Risers
Dirt bars
Z1000 mirrors
Custom cut tank (Took off the air valve fitments and welded in mesh)
Full after market header and pipe system
Aftermarket Headlight
Aftermarket digital dash
Powder coated rearsets and pipe hanger
Race pegs (anodised black, not the fold-up type)
Powder coated rocker cover

If you decide to put dirt bars on there I would highly recommend a steering damper or something else on the front end with a bit of weight. It is super prone to tank slappers even at low speed with such a light front end.243530243531

nice zxr yea might as well just focus on getting it going first then tidying up the frame. dont want to spend too much a its a 250 but i heard zxr 400 rear shocks are also better and bolt straight in too

Make it turn and stop better. Flatsides, porting, a full exhaust system and ignition advance is a huge waste of money. You'll end up with around 50hp at the crank if you spent a ton of cash on it, and then it's all going to be above 14,000rpm. Waste of time, you'll be faster on a standard one with re-valved forks/shocks etc etc.

Robert Taylor will tell you the direction to head in with suspension.

With these old 250s, it's suspension which is definitely in need of some updating. The ZXR250 is better than the CBR250 thank god but it is still a shocker.

Yeah I was pretty proud of it. Looking back now I would never have wasted that much time (or money) on it... especially after writting it off :bye:

But a great learning curve none the less!
