....forgot to add that CAMS is running a new class at its meetings. For want of a better name we have named it the CAMS 150/250 Class. Rules are fairly open. Max 150cc Two Stroke/ 250 Four Stroke, singles and twins.. By open we mean open...development of specials or competition motors is to be applauded...this is not a development class...it is a race class.
It will end up being an A and a B class situation... any competition motors will be A class, irrespective of ...(anything).... F4 machinery is eligible for this class, of course...we will still be running and supporting F4 at our meetings...

Im sorry to have to be writing of a fatal accident at our CAMS Christmas meeting.

Craig Hyde from Ashburton, seemingly, lost the back end in the first sweeper at Levels and went down in front of a rider who had no chance to avoid him. It was within seconds of flag drop in their first race of the day. Despite the red flag being called straight away and the very speedy Ambulance response, they could not revive him.

It's a sad time for a lot of riders and friends of his from around the Canterbury area and further afield.

Tragic as it is, this is what we do. It was a racing incident and no other rider had any bearing on the incident.

No matter how hard we try to be one of the most safety conscious clubs and are pushing even harder to make safer racing, we have to be aware that when the green flag drops our fate is uncertain. No amount of off track preparation and enforcement of safety related rules can change this.

Our collective hearts go out to his family and friends.

Well said Neil,

Couldnt agree more with you re the C.A.M.S clubs efforts surrounding the improvement of safety,Incidents like this are reminders that what we do is dangerous and should be treated with the respect it so deserves,My phone was redhot on Saturday morning with complaints of safety breaches and I fully expected a call regarding a fatality,But not from your meeting.

My thoughts go out to not only Craigs family and friends,But also the officials and corner workers who have to deal with the incident,In particular Grant Ramage,Its the second time this year he's had to do the measure up and at a track where his own brother lost his life in similar circumstances.

Here ya are,

Attached is the Methven Street Race entry form and a welcome message from the Methven Lions who host this event with CAMS. Entry is on a first in basis if classes are over subscribed so get your entries in early. Entries close on Friday 15 March 2013.

The format is the same as last year’s event with the exception of the Formula CAMS 150/250 class replacing the Motards.

Like last year there will be a prize giving and meal following the conclusion of racing. This will be in Samuels Bar at the Blue Pub. Bar will be open from 5pm and meal from 6pm. The entry fee includes one meal ticket and further meal tickets will be available for purchase at sign-on ($15/head).

CAMS are not taking t-shirt orders this year, t-shirts can be purchased direct from the supplier or at the track on the day. See the attached Lions message for ordering details.

N.B. Remember you need a 'Championship' licence to compete at a street race.

We look forward to seeing you all there.

Don't forget there's a CAMS club race day on 23 March at Ruapuna B track, a good opportunity for a shake down before Methven the following week.

With freezing overnight temps and further snow, sleet, rain and 5 degree day time temps etc it wasn't going to be safe or fun.

Was a great day, lots of sun and heaps of racing. Everyone went home in their own vehicles.
Big thanks to all the officials, another clockwork like CAMS event:niceone:

Congrats to Neville Wills on his Norton, winner of the pre63 cup:first:

CAMS run a training/learners class at every meeting. This allows experienced riders to introduce first timers and less experienced riders to the track in a safe format. They are able to learn the track and about their bikes at a safe pace.
They are taught the rules, about safety, proper race etiquette and advice is given from observation on how they can ride better, safer faster. Once the trainers are happy, the riders can move into proper race classes.

CAMS have observed for years that many riders have serious crashes in their first 10 meetings. This is our take on introducing riders to the track safely, reducing these crashes and hopefully increasing membership, return rates but ultimately is about ensuring riders of all levels have fun.

Does this race coaching include consideration for others feelings with untrue comments about width or any other size or shape?.:bleh:

You would get bored having to stay behind me anyway cos you would get no action (oops this is not the sidecar thread)as you were.

Unlike the older guy that craped out on the 1st of the S's stayed on his bike in the cross hairs for several laps, but after having his arse taned by me and lachy he learnt like the young fella, means we did good... on my behalf next time I may decide to pull off and move the possome in the headlight on.

can you explain the Training class, is it the same as MCI? ie: no race licence etc. I'd love to bring my 12 year old along, he has 2.5 year experience with MCI's training class but I understand it opens a can of worms with permits etc.

Triplenut
27th April 2014, 21:03
Training class is for new or inexperienced riders and racers to learn race craft and riding etiquette in a safe class where speeds are modest and they aren't going to get carved up.
Experienced riders go out with them to observe, offer advice and demonstrate race lines etc.

Riders need to be eligible for and hold either a day license or MNZ club/junior/championship license.
From 13 years onwards juniors can obtain a license to ride.

While we want to encourage new riders and CAMS even have a junior post classic bike available, we feel unlicensed riders present a risk we cant accept at this stage with current resources.

It was our first trial of CAMS Senior which turned out very well.

(Just a reminder CAMS Senior is any Pre 89, 82,72,63 less than 50 HP and new riders with yellow vests. )

Two main things came up. People who have pre 63 bikes normally have more than one bike in that period, this, then gave them a chance to ride both bikes on the day. The grins were great.

The other was that a few people brought friends along and because the class was there they let them have a go at racing/participating.

Quite good to see fully kitted riders jumping up and down waiting for their bikes to get back in so that can have a turn.

How long will the LC last ?

It's been a one off scratch race, then a one off handicap...I'd assume it's possible that if enough qualifying bikes are there, it could be split into Senior and Junior class races as the pre 89 cup has been previously.

Like any of these meets it's going to depend on entries on the day.

It was incredible the amount of oil and debris that we had to clean off the track from the Friday testing day. Had to put concrete dust down on almost every corner, apparently you weren't the only one on the Friday to crash from oil on the track.

Yeah a fair few did in the same session as me apparently. I heard you had to spend a bit of time cleaning up the track; Canterbury car club really should be keeping an eye on the cars on track I think, as when I was stuck out on track while the cars where going round I watched about 3 of em cruising around pissing out blue smoke!

Its a lesson learned for me though and I take my lessons where I can, "Be very careful on car/bike test days as cars drop oil!"

That's exactly why a lot of us old hands won't do combined race days..

In fairness, a lot of what was there probably was left fron the big car meeting the previous weekend. No rain didn't help either. Nothing like a couple of days of rain to clean a track...

way back when (cue violin music...) the only motorcycle roadracing in the SI was as the reluctantly allowed support to car meetings...

Then a couple of clubs managed to get their act together to stage bike only meetings....and we all rejoiced.

Occasionally some bastard ignorant of history thinks combined meetings are a good idea - usually in an attempt to piggyback on the TV coverage.
Once those combined meetings are held, history usually repeats....Modern wide tyres really don't like oil...the old narrow, hard rubber wasn't actually too bad as grip levels were low anyway.

from the Methven Thunder facebook

The Methven Lions Club and CAMS (Classic Action Motorcycle Sports (SI) Inc) wish to advise that the Methven Mountain Thunder Motorcycle Street Race held annually at Easter for the previous 8 years will no longer be continuing.
The decision to no longer run the event has been mutally agreed by the Methven Lions Club and CAMS.
For a variety of reasons CAMS and Methven Lions now wish to focus their volunteer efforts and man-power on new opportunities within both of their organisations.
Methven Mountain Thunder would not have been possible without the support of the many sponsors, MNZ officials, flag marshals, CAMS members, riders, committee members and volunteers, also the Methven community and associated businesses. We thank everyone that has contributed to the event.

sad to see a street race go, i can understand why tho, thanks to all those that made it happen,

Hi All,
We regret to advise riders and members that we have had to cancel the CAMS Round 5 at Ruapuna tomorrow.

This is due to St Johns being unable to provide appropriate medical cover to ensure the the safety and care of injured riders at the track.

This is due to the mass shooting in CHCH taking priority for all ambulance and medical teams.

Our thoughts go out to all those affected by the shootings and their friends and family.
.
Please share and let riders who were coming know .

If you have pre entered the event so your entry fee (if paid) will automatically carry over to the next CAMS Round in March.

If you require a refund please advise by email to camspresident@gmail.com along with bank acct details and name.

Regards

The CAMS Committee
