Now before you all take this the wrong way (too late I know...)

I am seriously considering making an external shell (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SolAXn-FCwQ/R1FDiwJVbpI/AAAAAAAAABg/bVtqPgpM0cU/s1600-R/halo-3-legendary-edition-20070307043453785-000.jpg) for my helmet. The plan is too keep it just as safe as it is, but look a whole lot more awesome.

Now every 5th or so thread in here is either "I scraped my helmet with my fingernail while putting it on, is it still usable??!??" or "You can't wash it with that concentrated liquid soap, that'll ruin the shell!!!"

So what exactly can I put on the exterior of a helmet that doesn't effect its safety or my mental stability while riding?

I saw the dude behind the drivers being interviewed after the car race at the weekend (the American one Scott Dixon races in). Obviously a sponsor of some kind but his helmet was like a chicken head with prominent yellow beak below the visor. Looked great and gave me some ideas. Not sure how it would work at any kind of speed though.

Viking horns ?

Helmet drops are often not so much to do with damage to the outer liner, but damage to the inner energy absorbing liner. The liners compress each time they absorb energy, and as a result, are good for only one use.

So your helmet will most likely already have two liners. Adding a third wont do anything for safety. But if you want to change the look of the helmet ...

Be careful with solvents and glues (and paints ...). Some of the petrochemical ingredients can do harm to the inner and outer liners.

So velcro should be ok depending on what it uses to stick onto the helmet?

Ask Jay lol

...and yes, velcro is fine on helmets, I use 3M Dual Lock on mine to hold the tachyon XC camera in place...works great and dosn't effect the helmet.

Good luck with the project

Viking horns ?

I knew a guy long time ago in Palmmie North who glued cows horns on his helmet exactly like that ...

Cycle treads don't have the gold iridium visor that I need.

is it possible and relatively easy to change the clippy things that that visor attaches to to another brand's?
