I passed my licence today... taken me 25 years or riding to get it (usless)

The question is... should I sell the RF and buy a 250 just to be legal?

Yes or No (risk it)

FYI... I am 6 foot and 135kg, I'm an experienced rider (if there is such a thing) and I'll ride two or three times a week.
I ride for fun not just to get from A to B

Dude, I rode a TT600 on a learners for a year. So speaking from experience, keep the RF900 and get your ass onto the CBTA fast track system ASAP.
Just enquire at your local AA. You should get your full pretty quick, possibly within three months.
If you get pulled over, just explain to the copper that your fast tracking at present, be sure to carry some proof in your wallet. Most coppers will be reasonable and understand your situation.

Try applying for an exemption from the waiting period or bike size from L.T.S.A.
You can get forms from AA or VTNZ or similar; if you have previous riding experience (which you obviously do) to the current license system and/or off-road experience they can take it into consideration.
Try making a couple of calls and get some advice on it. You do need to avoid saying to them outright that you've been riding unlicensed (I'm guessing you have) or anything, obviously.
Good luck!

I have attached an info form RE: CBTA training and also the application form.

The following email address is for Andrew & Lynne Templeton in Wellington. They are both AA motorcycle examiners. They're very helpful and will point you in the right direction for the Tauranga area.

admin@roadsafe.co.nz

The only catch with CBTA is the course will cost about $275. But it will get you legal quickly and the best part is that you will undergo a very good motorcycle safety course in the process.

Yes or No (risk it)

How does that affect your insurance?

I'd say keep the RF, and beg, borrow or buy a 250 to get thru the fastrack system then get rid of it. Or (keep RF) and buy an old 100cc then after yr got yr full turn it into a bucket racer!

I just hired a 250 from a local dealer to do the two tests - $80 a day each time.
It honestly only takes 20 minutes riding to familiarise yourself well enough with a 250.

Over 25 there are no waiting periods on the CBTA course. You still have to sit two courses, 6L>6R and 6R>6F. That's around $550 all up. Not that much more expensive than a ticket for breaking your licence restrictions.

From experience, there's about a 3-4 week wait on approval from LTSA to do the course. Riders over 25 can apply to use their current bike to sit the course. In applying for this, you will need to give them some info about how long you've had the bike for, how long you've been riding etc.

One of the ideas behind it is to allow experienced riders such as yourself who have 'forgotten' to go through the normal licencing process to get legal without subjecting you to cc restrictions and that like that may be appropriate for a learner rider.

How many demerit points do you have? (i.e. in a car)

I suppose it also depends on where you ride and how fast you ride.

If you can handle sticking to about 10 kmh over the speed limit and you've got a low amount of demerit points, i'd just stick it out on the rf.

As long as you don't do anything to attract attention to yourself theres a good chance you'll get away with riding on the wrong class of licence.

Keep the RF. Stay out of trouble Ie speeding and stuff. If they have no reason to pull you over you will probably get away with it. However I have a mate that was done for caring a passenger on an L plate no L sticker and 19kmh over the speed limit and a worn rear tyre. $1,100.00 fine. Reduced by $150.00 when he replaced the tyre. The other problem is the worry about getting picked up. But if it was me I would carry all the info of your time on a bike and take a chance. Just keep the speed down etc. Good luck.

Keep the RF. Get hold of a 250 somehow and persevere with it until you are legal. Fastracking sounds good (whatever that is).

skidz
7th July 2005, 11:36
Whats the problem? Obviously you've been riding the RF for some time, so why change? As long as you sort of obey the main things of the law, you should be right. But whatever you do, don't put the L plate on the RF.

At last. Somebody whose "love handles" are bigger than mine...

Oh yeah. Do the right thing and ride the 250. Do a CBTA and get your full licence ASAP. You can even apply for an exemption to sit the tests on the bike you "normally ride"...
