Home made radar screamer issues

i have just made this and cant get it to work! dam it

i want somthing that is not connected via a cable because i am sick of the headphone wire flapping about in the wind no matter what i do. and then it pulls half way out of my ear, which is most annoying


ive looked at the original poster and seems they have not posted for some time so i though they were probably incactive now. so i did not bother sending them a pm.

i have followed the diagram exactly using the exact same parts from jay car. when i connect it to my detector it does nothing but i do hear the relay click.

i am not a sparky, but i can follow diagrams and connect cables and solder etc no probs

i have checked all the components seperatly with a tester and they are all working.

i am powering it off a 9v batery. however, i do have a 12v relay on my bike to connect it to once it working ( with an inline fuse aswell)

ive tried the buzzer conected stright to the 9v battery and it goes off.. ive tried taking it to bits and starting again and got the same result...........the relay clicks when i conect the pos and neg to the 9v battery but nothing from the buzzer when i initiate the RD to beep

any ideas electrical gurus? .............oh and in laymans terms please.

There was an error in the wiring diagram supplied by the OP in that old thread. The capacitor should be in parrallel with the piezo, not in series.

I've got a bluetooth setup at the moment; and I have a receiver for sale ($40) if you're interested which can receive from two sources (i.e. radar and music/phone/whatever). e-bay has many bluetooth transmitters which are reasonably priced (about $20) and plug into the headphone output of your radar. You'll need to plug in any headphones to the receiver; I've got mine permanently fixed into the helmet.

Update: It's an ARWH1, and Acoustic Research say "You can either listen to music or speak on the telephone, you can't do both simultaneously. A message indicating an incoming call would display on the screen and you have to press a button to change sources" - I assume this [manual source change] also applies to two audio sources (i.e if you weren't interested in answering phone calls). So not much use for listening to music and also hearing your radar when it goes off; or hearing your radar and also receiving incoming calls. Bummer; that's nowhere near as cool as I thought it would be when I ordered it.

It'd still make a good receiver for a single source; and offer you a remote handsfree phone receiver (with headphones of your choice) with audio control for when you're not on the bike.

Sorry I'm not much help diagnosing your screamer issues ... I looked at this option but decided to be a bit more discreet

firstly, thanks for the replies. please forgive my lack of understanding. But, to clarify, does that mean that the capacitor should be wired 'in line' to the siren?

positive supply of the siren to positive on cap, and neg of the siren to neg of the cap?

i dont really want to spend 200 bucks on a hard system. i want an audio alert as no matter where im looking i ll hear it, unlike a visual alert.

rapid van cleef, you mention the relay is clicking.... it should not make a sound, it should be a solid state relay. A normal coil relay won't work in most cases and might damage your detector.

ok, iv ordered a solid state relay as recommended by another kb poster from the original thread that i got the instructions from. thanks for that

hi. well ive finally got the relay today and im stumped. the relay(5v solid state relay from jaycar)

so, as im looking at the printed markings on the front, do they correspond with the terminals that are immediatly oppositte them on the rear? thats how ive wired it. and when the ignition is switched on, the sirens goes off, no switching occurs, its just on!

Or,

Are the terminals actually the oppositte way round ,so the top left terminal which is marked pin 2 neg on the printed side corresponds with the top left pin when i turn it around? so it is in fact oppositte?

does that make sense?
