View Full Version : Auckland to Raglan-ish, Sunday 7 August

Edit: I've got the flu so can't make it, read on in case someone else is picking up the reins!
Yet another meandering tour of the gravel between Auckland and that outpost of bohemian Tron escapees for all those interested in scenery, mudslides and gravel (farmers, sheep and cattle are thrown in for free). Just a note to any south islanders wanting to come (you listening Woodman ?) it's a bit more than a day trip for you guys, ok?

So, departing the last fringes of civilisation (Papakura Autobahn) at 8am heading via Tuakau bridge either down the coast via Klondyke or centrally on Ponganui road to Nikau caves cafe for a coffee and preliminary bout of lies and exageration (be there 9.30 ish?).

Carry on towards Raglan, fuel at Te Uku (about 150kms from the start) then Bridal Veil road, around the mountain, Whale bay etc and to Raglan for lunch around the middle of the day. If time permits this may become a quick run down to Kawhia rather than round the mountain but past experience shows that by the time we have stuffed around time runs out.

Lunch and lies then back up the north via more gravel (whichever route we didn't us to get down)...

So, lots of gravel and it's on regardless of weather unless it really is cyclonic in which case I will post up on saturday evening and Deano & Taz can give me shit about my woosiness.

If we haven't met I'm the bald one on an orange chook chaser.

Hi Ian,
I will probably meet up with you civilised lot in Raglan/Te Uku.
(kanny has promised me a haircut, and I might even shave, so I shouldn't scare the Auckland boys too much)

My ride hasn't even got clearance from the tower yet, let alone taxi, ing down the run way, so a chat will have to do instead.

Hopefully Dino/Mark/SuzyGirl/Kanny etc will make it also.:sunny:

You will need to check if you can still get fuel at Te Uku the last Britten ride we did around there the store had stopped selling fuel.

A good plan and I even have a pinlock these days to help with the most likely weather. The arse is that I'm on a course all weekend so I can't come and annoy everyone. Will try harder to make it next time....

Possibly the pub or one of the two cafes directly over the road from it dependant on the state of our hydration....

Looks good to me Deano, what can possibly go wrong?

As it looks like there will be few to meet in Raglan I suggest the route i snow definately like this.....

8am at Papakura
9.30 ish at Nikau caves
Te Uku 11.30ish (absolutely no guarantees on the time!)
Around the mountain to Raglan for 1.30ish.

Understand that the times all depend on who turns up, who has a flat, rides slow and takes too long for a coffee.... you will need a degree of patience.

I'm open to suggestions on this ie: straight to Raglan and around the mountain after lunch & talking? Maybe fuel will be an issue here?

Let me know what you think.

you could go to the bp then back out to mangatawhiri rd (good views) over to the te mata rd then round the mountian to lunch at Rags or maybe after the BP head out to the golf club and over Te Hutewai rd to Te Mata then round the hill... just ideas, i personally dont give a rats i got 400kms in the tank :D

I have successfully got the man-flu and it shows no signs of buggering off in the near future so, I'm out for this sunday.

Fight amongst youselves for the privilege of leading this small shambles or, if you can't decide, I will post up another date (next weekend?) after I emerge from this near death experience.

Chocolates and nubile dancing girls welcome.....

Stink man.
And it looks like you picked a shocker of a day for it weather-wise. I think I shall probably just go for a ride on Saturday while the weather is nice. Probably just hit Muriwai beach/dunes/Wilsons road for a play.

Ok, so it looks like it is falling apart. Or has fallen apart.

So I can't do Saturday, but weather permitting, would be keen to go in a northerly direction on Sunday.

Let me know or I will entertain myself, so to speak.
