View Full Version : How would you class the riding position of a Gladius?
St_Gabriel
1st August 2011, 20:14
As asked in the thread title, what is a gladius classed as? Sports? tourer? and secondly, what other bikes have a similar upright riding position?
Was looking to get rid of the "training bra" (VL250) and get the "big boys bike". Went looking around Hams at the dealers and there was very few secondhand cruisers around but got talking to Greg Boyd (herein referred to as The Temptor) when he suggested I get my fat arse on a sfv650 to try it. Well I got back and called hima few names under my breath as I didnt expect that I would enjoy a sportier style and have had to broaden my search to include not just cruisers......
Suggestions? But please bear in mind my generous proportions
Cheers in advance

Good grief. Go and take one for a ride. Riding position aside, you'll love it. There's not much a Gladius can't do.

I did, hence why Greg is now referred to as "The Temptor", now i have to make my new bike search broader than just a cruiser as I couldnt keep the grin from my face.

Cruisers are the preserve of old men and short women. Otherwise avoid them.

Bikes I can think of that are similar are Yamaha FZ6N, Kwaka Z750, STREET TRIPLE, Honda Hornet 600, Mid sized Ducati Monsters. I'm sure there's lots more out there, ride as much as you can and enjoy finding a new bike.:scooter:

Suzuki also make a GSX650F (an absolute stunner) and the SV650. Aprilia make the Shiver 750 (the Mark I is worth a look, the Mark II is not as good).

I'd classify the Gladius as a Modern Standard. You know, what bikes all used to be before all this god-awful fragmentation of genres happened.
The Gladius will go three times as many places and give you ten times as much fun than a cruiser or pure sports bike.
And don't fall for brand bigot's crap. All bikes are good (even those crappy ones that idiot DB rides).

"Relaxed"
I've ridden a Gladius (and I love my sports bike) and found it too be alot of fun and very nimble around town would make good weekend weapon and would be a good step up for most learners......
I don't know how you ride so can't say if this bike is for you or not,but as already mentioned, get out on the bikes and see what you feel comfy on its your arse in the saddle....

Only 5"10 but around the 130 kg mark so true sports bikes aint in the game for me (cant get the belly over the tank, but havent actually tried either)

There's a certain bloke on this site that would be at least at those proportions so I wouldn't rule out 'sports bikes' entirely re riding position etc.
The Gladius is a good bike but I would also consider looking at the ER range plus some others have mentioned the Yamahas too.
A lot of it will come down to your budget

1996 RF900RThey're reasonably comfy for a sportyish bike, and dirt cheap to boot. OP if you can handle a little pork, then take one of those for a thrash too... another bike the owners seem to like, a lot... GSXR motor, so basically unkillable. Much cheaper to write one of these off.... Forget the smaller ones, they're shit. Ignore that suggestion if you've no control over your right wrist.
riffer
4th August 2011, 16:40
Talking of pork, the motor in the RF is the GSXR1100 1127cc destroked to 937cc. 25 lss HP (125), BUT a massive 30kg less weight than the GSXR. Do the sums. Very similar performance and a hell of a lot more chuckable than a gixxer.
Of course the looks are somewhat polarising.

130kg and 5'10"....you'll look like a drum sitting on a ghey pea :innocent:
Love the SV650 engine, and had a curvy and a pointy (naked and S versions). Sitting on the Gladius was really low to the ground and not quite what I wanted. Plumped for the V-strom....it has a very generous seat and the seat height is lowish (getting short fat lags over may be a challenge).
BTW I'm a slim 127kgs and 5'10" ......you'll fit a sports bike, but you may need to put rearsets on so your hams and calves aren't permanently in contact and staringin your knees.
What was the question again?

Not a girls bike but borderline ...had a Gladius ( Though that's a girls name - surely ) as a loaner when I had the 'Busa in for a service .
Had a ball and did'nt wanna give it back , not a bike for me longterm but ...maybe my Mrs.. ?

Not sure I'd call it a girls bike, more tending toward the effeminate. Especially in the pink/white colour scheme

Have you tried one, Imdying? or are you just being elitist? I tried one right after a Busa and a Gixxer, and thought it was more FUN than both of them.

It is - they took the perfectly good looking SV650 naked and girled it up. It even comes in pretty colours. They need to do a Harley on it and bring out a 'night' version for the men.
Plus I despise the plastic cover over the frame made to look like it is steel tubing (aka Ducatish).
Otherwise they are good bikes.
I suggest you have a look in the KB "for sale" as there is a nice green naked Z1000 going for a silly price that would be a much better proposition. even for a portly fella

Its bike aimed at girls, plain and simple.
Otherwise why would suzuki design a bike almost the same as the SV? They are the same style (naked SV anyway), same motor etc... just the gladius' proportions and dimensions are more suited to women.
FZ6 imo is the superior bike in that class, all the others are lacking power (ghey small twins) whearas a 100hp IL4 is a whole lot more fun :D

So clearly destined for girlies then. So a girl placing her 'sheath' (look up the meaning of vagina) on the Gladius (sword). Wouldn't want to be Gladiused (is that a word) in the ring would you?
