I thought it was about time I started my own thread rather than intruding into other people’s threads all the time, so here is a ride report thread with my New Zealand adventure rides.
Most of the location details, route details and downloadable GPS files will be on the website www.adventureguide.co.nz, but if there is a route or location you are interested that it is not detailed feel free to PM or email me for the info.

Hi mate, Dad has nearly come right after his spill but unfortunately not quite in time to pickup on the ride we had planned, we have rescheduled that ride to next year when he returns and did manage to squeeze in this trip (http://www.adventureguide.co.nz/articles/12/172/march-heli-trip.php). Best wishes for a fast recovery for your upcoming op, once you are fighting fit again and looking to sniff around the South Island for a ride/fish hit me up, it'd be great to catch up, I have a number of great places up my sleeve
Keep well mate :niceone:

No fuel carried on the rear pannier cages as the 28 litre tank keeps me well fueled up. The cages hold the MSR fuel bottle/pump, fire extinguisher, snow chains (in winter), oil, etc.

Hey ya Clint, don't ask that questions mate, you'll make me cringe! I only managed a little over 20k. To be fair I believe I caused this by installing a Rekluse clutch. While I should be on my 1st clutch pack at 20k I am on my 3rd (and went through two Rekluse units) so I believe it was clutch fiber oil contamination that was the cause of the running big end and oil consumption. The Rekluse clutch was/is such a nice system to ride with, but for strings of long days of fully laden riding in techy terrain there is just too much continual clutch slip no matter how the Rekluse is tuned. Needless to say I won't be installing one on this engine so should have a long trouble free run
Have a great MMMMM mate :niceone:

Interesting what yer say about the Rekluse.... Might pay to go to 1,500km oil/filter changes..
The XTR being a dry sump motor.... Wonder if that going to be a help or not....

Good to hear you are back riding again, what oil do you run and how frequent to you do oil changes? After my recent stator problems, big end trouble would be something I would like to stay away from, what mileage should you get out of DRZ engine?

Ah, you've fallen into my cunning trap.
Have an ask around about the Chasm Track...
Palmer Rd to Ikamatua...
Public all the way...
Indeed, your plan worked and I have been busy doing a lot of homework
Palmer Road out to Ikamatua was a great route, with "was" being the primary work. At the Snowy River end the McVicars landowner is a nice chap and happy for people to go through however at the Palmer Road end there is a new land owner and the access has been fenced off and the land owner is reportedly not allowing access through. I will follow up on that, but I was distracted by this...
Regarding the Chasm Track (actual name Bulletproof Chasm Track), it's not very well known to adventure riders probably because it is one of the toughest 4X4 tracks in the South Island. I had a yarn with Paul (TrialsRider) for a good hour about this track. One of Paul's 4X4 buddies (Bulletproof) actually built the track, Paul has done it a number of times in his 4X4 and played a role in maintaining it/repairing it after major floods. To the best of his knowledge it has never been done by unsupported adventure bikes, Paul and I decided this just won't do so a trip is being planned. I am in the middle of organising winching gear and flotation devices as there are a couple of gnarly near vertical sections getting in and out of the chasm that bikes will most likely need to be winched plus crossing the Grey, a 50 foot wide bouldery river that runs at a minimum of 3 feet at normal flows (that has been known to drown its fair share of 4X4s) that we will have to float the bikes across.
Will be limiting the ride to 6 riders, there is a spot reserved for you should you choose to take on the challenge! Will follow up with more info through PM
Here are some photos/videos

Good to know the house survived the flooding, close call!
Gorgeous pics as always.

We used to get that sort of close call flooding back in Hope.
All the nearby properties used to drain onto ours...

It's certainly an uneasy feeling living in a house that is prone to flood. The actual building a house where you can open the door to a water raging up the steps on an biannual basis defies logic I can comprehend

En route to Christchurch for Christmas, currently in a motel in Blenheim, came through Nelson, Picton, Queen Charlotte Drive, Port Underwood. Really surprised to see so few people on the road for this time of year.
Each time I go through the twisty section heading out from Hira I am continually impressed at how courteous the drivers are at pulling over and letting bikes pass.
Freaking awesome blast around Port Underwood Road, no traffic, I was the only one on the road :headbang:
I may have to retrace my steps tomorrow, it appears I left half my rear tyre tread behind :innocent:

Nice pics man. Pop into the shop for a yarn if you end up retracing your steps XD
You weren't wrong about it being quiet. All the traffic is heading south =/

Cheers mate, I will do. I'll be in your neck of the woods over the next few weeks.
I am presuming the traffic did find you and your shop? Like an explosion on the morning of the 24th, cars appeared from everywhere, it was crazy! Thank god for back roads =)

Yeah they sure did! The hire companies had ridiculous amounts of cars booked to go out on the 24th and 25th so we can blame them haha
Went for a spin down QCD on Xmas day but turned back at Ngakuta because it was more like playing roulette with cars on the corners than a relaxing ride. Made it out alive and the weather was awesome so no complaints.
Well done on avoiding the rain. It's been pretty hit and miss here over the last week.
