Im in the middle of a cafe racer build on an old CB125. One problem I have come across is in the handle bars. I want to go to clip ons but the smallest size I can source are 32mm. The forks on my ride are only 27mm. I have spoken with an engineer and they can make a 32mm sleeve for me, but the question I have is that I I go this way, are there likely to be any compliance problems when it comes time to being VIN'd??

You can get shims made up. The guy in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance made some out of cut up beer cans.

Robert Pusang or whatever. What a lot of LSD claptrap that was. Yes ok I understand, the dude has a mental health issue. Go see a clinic, don't try to give the rest of us brain damage in book form. Then a whole bunch of arthouse pseudo intellectuals praise the book probably as some sort of sick joke followed by the emperors new clothes effect making it a best seller. Bah.

Kiwibiker just happened :shit:

Physically there should be nothing wrong with just shimming it. Compliance wise it's a nightmare, the low volume vehicle cert association (google for their website) has a list of what mods are ok etc, but most of it seems to be written to be open to interpretation or just poorly worded or thought out.

Hayd3n has the right idea, if they reject the vin with clip-ons (unlikely imo), just put the standard ones back on.

a friend of mine who is an actual Doctor of Philosophy (and who understands all the bits of that book I skipped over - yes, I admit it) has a quite low opinion of Pirsig's book. I'm all "well if it had pictures of boobs in it, it would be better".

that applies to pretty much any book I find.

My daughter gave me that book as a present a while ago and I got tired reading it a few chapters in and gave up on it - sigh!!

Indeed Kiwibiker did happen.

Merv, you saved yourself some grief. Me, I want those hours of my life back, esp as I'm a slow reader & being in my 20s again might be kinda cool, at least for a while.

HDC, I think those types of books are called Periodicals & can be found on the high shelf of your corner diary.

btw my comments were in relation to the book ref in post above mine.

If you still want to talk sleeving clip-ons down to a smaller size then ask yourself the question:
Does the engineer fully appreciate; not only how to make such a sleeve, but also it's intended purpose & how much leverage will be put on it when you apply the brakes in an emergency stop situation 2 years later having ridden a million miles over our goat track roads? (actually, very little- knowing CB125 brakes)

Sure it isn't that hard, but to trust half the munters you'd encounter at a VIN station with some complete lash ups, - it would make you pretty suspicious of anything that didn't look like it was designed & made for a stock bike.

Zen and the Art of Kiwibiker. Sounds like scummy.

I would want to pretty sure that the guy making 'em knew what he was doing.

what about a clubman bar on the stock top triple clamp? sure not as sexually enticing as clipons, but no compliance issue

ehhhh, you might be surprised. I have heard that welded bars were not legal & that was why you couldn't find them any more. Not sure how true that is because some heli bars are welded & probably some production bars, cross bars on Dirt bikes spring to mind.

:gob: What just happened?

He forgot to take his medication today

I'd look for a set of GL145 front forks, pretty sure they're a bigger OD and have a better brake

He probably has a low opinon of it because it's fucking rubbish

I read it to the end but it was hard work

Have you looked at Clubmans bars?
