Manukau Heads?

Hi, I'm going to cover some new ground on Friday, heading up past Waiuku to the Manukau heads. Thought I would just spend a day nosing around that area.

Has anyone been over those roads lately? Are there any roads to steer clear of, or to seek out? Cheers.

There is the lighthouse overlooking the bar after a short walk up to the base of the lighthouse you can either look out over the bar from a couple of viewing platforms or go up inside the lighthouse

Heading North on Manukau Heads Road you will get to a sharp right hander where the road looks like it should have gone straight ahead and changes to gravel. The short gravel road leads on to the lighthouse care park. Dont get confused with the road on the left called lighthouse road cause is don't live up to its name.
I think you have to ride back to boiler gully road and ride down the hill to get to the inner harbour beaches.
Roads were good condition, just a bit of gravel where a drive or road meets the main road especially if the gravel road is on the high side, I remember a blanket of pine needles on a bend but cant remember the road(?), the roads are full of curves and the traffic is very light. Good food at Waiuku.

Spearfish; Thanks for the info, I'll have a decent map with me. Thought I would come up through SH22, take a lunch and camera and have a leisurely ride around the place. I see there is a campground at the end of the pennisula.

How far, roughly, from Waiuku to the tip? Google doesn't show any distances.

About 25 km to the top from memory.

After you turn right before the Caltex garage in Waiuku to get on to King St. there's a road sign as you head out of town telling you the distances to various places on the heads.

After you turn right before the Caltex garage in Waiuku to get on to King St. there's a road sign as you head out of town telling you the distances to various places on the heads.

That caltex is now a Shell.

Well, I hope you dont get sucked in by those broken arsed employees, making out they are too crook to come in, especially, if they happen to own a motorbike.

Too be honest, I rarely get sick. Tomorrows a day off.

Came home from work this morning to find I've sold my my riding jeans on trade me. Fuck! I hope its not too cold tomorrow, riding in my jacket and boxers, :gob:

It's 50kms from Waiuku to the light house.
The gas station at Matakawu is shut after mid day Sundays.
Watch for locals on the wrong side of the road in the corners,,,we own the road,,even more so if we happen to be driving a land cruiser.
The roads are better than highway 22.

Less Gravel,better camber,less pot holes,the deer are only really a problem early mornings.
With the huge increase in people in the area over the last 20 years,the deer numbers have been reduced a lot,but the places to be on the look out for them is from Cockranes gap through to Matakawau.
The name "Road kill" comes from an old habit of mine,,,their still good if you get em' in the first hour or so,,,:laugh:
