View Full Version : Opinion piece: A motorcycle race on the Isle of Wight? Why not?

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Kara Rann, the young woman driving the 'Campaign for an Isle of Wight TT' for Motor Cycle Monthly.
Kara's vision is simple; the Isle of Man runs a tremendously successful road race that pulls in millions of Pounds for the Island's economy. So why can't the Isle of Wight do something similar?

As for tourist season... you don't think it will work with all the pensioners walking across the track...:innocent:

So long as it isn't during the summer tourist season or Cowes week, there is plenty of scope to hold such an event.
You can fire a shotgun down Cowes High Street at any other time of the year without risk to anyone... and that is supposedly a "busy" shopping street.

Nothing wrong with Wanno........was there meself before going to Parkhurst.....as a screw not a client!
The only place on the island to open up the throttle would be the tiny motorway along side St Mary's Hospital!

Always make it the TT tour of the West Wight..... Newport to Yarmouth to Totland then rip up the Military Road

The IoM covers the central part of that island, so a route could be made "somewhere" on the IoW.
West or East?
Hopefully something can be organised!:woohoo:

There are plenty of good roads which could be used.
It would be a good tourist attraction for the Island. Perhaps who-ever organises it could have it coincide with Cowes Week or even the off shore power boat competion which used to be held down off the coast at Sandown.
I think it would be a great attraction.

Ha!!! I left Wandsworth for the sunnier climbs of Devon... Channings Wood not Dartmoor... enjoyed it down there, only left because we moved here.

True, technically the IoM has some autonomy with regards to that stuff, IoW on the other hand would have to work with the HSE and that is never any fun.

Not sure if the Off Shores still run there, if they do that would be a fantastic double header, not with Cowes week though, to many geezers in blazers sipping G'n'T's:facepalm:

Can you imagine a TT race during Cowes week though? Even if the authorities fenced off Cowes to keep the toffs away from the rest of the island, there would still be problems.
Make it into a stand-alone event that creates its own atmosphere and draws a different audience.

That would make the most sense has each of the different events would, as you say draw different crowds.....Some of the roads are awesome to ride on. It can probably be done without too much fuss, I know that they still run the round the island cycle race, I know a different mode of transport but a good majority of the ride is on the public highway.
May be the organisers could contact the IoM TT organisers and see what could be achieved.

Think I mentioned this in the MCM article, but the IoM TT organisers were not really interested. The guys who organise the road races in Northern Ireland were way more co-operative.
That said, funny how not all that long after the IoW race gets proposed, than the IoM starts looking to see if a "TT World championship" is viable!
