View Full Version : Dr Who?

So what did people think of the new Dr Who series?
They've kept it pretty true to the original series - low budget special effects, silly story lines, and lame humour. Bit of a larf tho!

Fucken loved it. The whole thing.
Pissed myself start to finish, but then, you know that.
I was more than pleased with it......

Yeah. I guess it will become a Thursday night staple.
Just cheesy enough to still be cool.

Awesome - quite edgy too. Been a Dr Who fan since the first one with William Hartnell, which gives my age away I guess  A mate sent me this series on disc and all of them are superb.

Looks like the boys have found a way to get the TV turned on for an hour on thursdays. It was pretty cool I thought,as mentioned...cheezy and low budget keeping to the original,be a shame to see it turn into a 21st century remake. The web search was a good touch, but I kinda hoped as the geek turned the history of the Doctor back through time we'd see all the old Doctors, after all,the whole reason it kept going was that the physical appearance of the DR didn't matter.

Here I was thinking 'LOST' was bad.
Really really disapointed with 'Doctor Who'! Maybe it will get better next week.
I seem to remember saying that about 'LOST' too!

I've seen all the Doctors and I must admit I was pretty impressed. Still maintained that sense of irreverence that it always had.
I thought that the new chap was excellent. Seemed like a mix of the Tom Baker, and Peter Davidson characters. Even my teenage boys enjoyed it!

I was really disappointed..... that I missed it.
I caught only the last few minutes (which were incomprehensible) as I was busy booking accommodation for our vacation next week (attempt number 4, after booking and cancelling 3 others destination....)
But the end was so good - she didn't go,and the TARDUS dissapeared....then he came back and said...''it travels in time too''
What would you do? I'm pretty sure I'd of done anything to beat her to the door!

If it helps he's already quit (end of the first season). Didn't want to be typecasted. Which is good, the changing doctors is an intengral part of Dr. Who. Although it was never ment to be, it is.
Personally I was pleasantly surprised, when I first saw it. Most of the feedback from the hardcore who'ites has been positive.
Hmmm...
From the ads I didn't think it looked very good. But maybe now I'll have to give it a watch...

Loved it, true to the original series.
"Hmm, that'll never last. He's gay and she's an alien". Loved that line, wonder who he was referring to....? (Before everyone points it out for me, it had to be the David and Victortia)

she's SO TINY, but very nice and a lot of fun.
my memories are somewhat muddled from that night - but i think i had a great time.

Only 1 item to note:
It could be my fading memory, but I thought each new Dr Who series started with the 'death' of the previous doctor, who then fades away and is replaced with the new 'face'. Maybe we'll see Sylvester McCoy 'die' in a flashback. This excludes the recent feature film I gues, which was surprisingly not a total hack job as one would cringe and expect from a Hollywood studio.

it could be that this is an indication of what's going to happen.

Sylvester McCoy's transformation was into Paul McGann - for the Fox TV Movie. The current Doctor comes after the McGann Doctor. BBC's reason for not filming a transformation is they reckon it only works if the audience has had time to form an emotional attachment to the previous Doctor - which, with only one movie appearance, never had a chance to occur.

Kept with the BBC "Dr Who" tradition so cool in my book. My 7 yr old watched it with me and spent a bit of time with a blanket over his head, but liked it though. Loved the gay/alien comment.

To be honest, I was not very impressed with it (and yes I'm a sci-fi nut). I thought for the opening program it was very lacking in action and effects, not the sort of thing to get someone hooked onto the series. I only hope that it will improve (the shorts for next week look better). So far, I must say that I enjoy the original more. Although I hope that will be changing shortly.

Brilliant!
Cheap (sih), tacky, silly, great story line - everything Dr Who should be.
The second and third episodes are even better. And one of them (the one with the gas zombies) was filmed in my home town of Swansea.

Caught up with the first two episodes courtesy of my Office Mangler - the female tree was indeed sexy - think the Doctor was gettin a wood, too.
My three-year-old, Taliesin, sat on my lap and watched it with me - was fascinated. Must be genetic or there's subliminals in that theme music - it had a rivetting efect on him, he was as fascinated with the show as I was when I was a kid. Can't wait til he sees the Daleks - they're my favourite Doctor Who "monster" of all time (was rapt when I heard they had squared things up with Terry Nation's Estate and got the rights to have Daleks)
The new series looks good so far - definitely scary and tense.
Last Time Lord? Surely not, surely there were others wandering out and about, other renegades.

Interesting idea - Jeremy Clarkson as Doctor Who? The Gerbil could be K9.
Actually I've got a copy of the Comic Relief spoof they did a few years ago, where the Doctor is played by Rowan Atkinson, Richard E. Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Joanna Lumley in succession. Most amusing.

The difference between the old series and the new?
The old series had crappy special efx and a crappy story line. That worked
The new series had great special efx and still a crappy story line. Just did not work for me.
Conclusion. The makers have tried to capture the storylines of the old series and married that with computer generated special effects.
Bit like and old man getting married to a teenager. Great for the old man but no fun for the teenager.
Old hands might 'dig it' but the younger generation................I don't think so.

The previous week's Top Gear was a repeat. This week is a repeat of the Lamborghini tribute. The Dr Who re-screen was because a large bloc of Whovians requested it. Despite Sci-Fi geeks apparently being a minority, they managed a much larger number of people to request the re-screen than any motorcycling bloc has managed to request MotoGP, hence why MotoGP isn't live any more.
Billie Piper's lips are second only to Angelina Jolie's.

Saw that episode yesterday, TS, and I felt it was quite well covered and explained. Historically something not too dissimilar occured with a previous Doctor.
I don't want to say any more for fear of ruining it for those who have yet to see it.

Hang in there. We watched the whole series a couple of weeks back (not that I condone piracy or participate in it, it juts happened to be on ;-0) and it gets a lot betterer. There's still enuff cheese to satisfy the oldies, but some of the horror aspects at around ep 8 they come up with scared the willies out of us.
