Hi people.
Im Ky
A 22 year old living in central Auckland.

Just wondering if there might be any young chick riders out there?
I just bought a Harley and dont have many people my age to ride with... or even 10 years older.

So please reply so I can make some new biker mates :)
Always keen to go on trips, or you can join me on some of my rides :)

Its not a bad thing.
All my mates who I ride with currently are in their late 40's and all though the 50's.
Would just like some people who I can relate to a little better. :D

I got a bike 6 months ago and im still not brave enough to ride it over the bridge ;(lmfao.

wait for a day when it's not too windy. pick your lane well before getting on. stay clear of 4x4s.
there's nothing to it.

practice sis!

city riding is shit. the only good bit is lane splitting up to stop lights etc past miles-long car queues.

and speaking of this. forgive me if it's been answered or in another thread (i haven't searched) but is there a shadow-program going on anywhere in NZ... where people can sign up to follow n00bs on their bikes, imparting wisdom, and being paid beer.
and n00bs can sign up to be followed to buy beer and receive wisdom?

I do :2thumbsup I just got a bike. I've done a bit of practice in a carpark and I'm aiming to get my learners in the midsemester break (after exams).
Once I've got that, I'd be really keen to get in as much practice as possible cause I'll need the confidence to commute into the city.

As for the first question - 21 living on the North Shore :)

If you want I will ask about to see if any shore based riders can help out, if not then Im sure I can come up one evening to help.

Its not at all hard. In fact probably one of the easiest sections of road in Auckland. Everybody is going the same way.

My mates and I often shadow newbies - or we put the newbie in the middle so we are the buffer. Loud and obnoxious at the back to prevent tailgaters and the quiet experienced bike at the front. Works well.

Confidence certificate, basic handling test same thing. Seriously recommend getting that done from a good place like Passrite as the 1st thing you do, they teach you slow riding skills and the style to use before testing you. A lot of fun as well.

Actually it's not. Basic Handling Skills is mandatory to obtain your learner's licence. The confidence course is optional, provided by some providers to assist you in improving your control of your bike.

I would not recommend Passrite for riding training, and would recommend some of the more motorcycle specific people, with more experience, such as Rider Training, Riderskills or the like.

I went to Passrite in Hamilton and must of done both on the same day then. The instructor was very helpful and said he teaches stunt riding aswell so my guess is he was very motorbike specific. Guessing Auckland Passrite has room for improvement?

The first time I went across I was pretty nervous for a whole lot of reasons...getting squished, blown over by the wind, choosing the wrong lane but in hindsight I had nothing to worry about :2thumbsup

It is pretty simple really, once you've done it you will realise it isn't that hard or scary! It sounds like you've had some people offer to take you across, I think that's a great idea. Especially with a loud Harley at the back...

I am going to beg to differ on the bridge. Per km it is as dangerous as any piece of road I know.
Actually, I don't use it much now, but reckon I have crossed it on 2 wheels about 2000 times.
Pleased to say that so far I have always made it.

Usually it is just fine, but here are some things that have happened to me on the Ak Harbour Bridge:
* struck on the ankle by a piece of 4x2 off a builder's ute - hobbled for 2 days afterwards
* hit by a tennis ball sized rock squeezed out like an orange pip from a truck tyre (bruise on leg)
* overtaken by a motorcyclist southbound at peak hour doing over 100mph (estimated)
* overtaken on scooter at speed & then nearly pushed into side as car returned to my lane out of space
* truck & trailer attempt to overtake my scooter at 100 kph (truck was not actually fast enough)
* Was desperate & crossed (motorcycle) in a cylone (160kph gusts) (Yes I was crazy - not allowed now)

That is just what I can remember off the cuff. Please be very careful out there! Far worse than this happens.

I do it twice a day everyday, I've been sweet everyday. You've just gotta be observant and remember the wind factor.
Don't forget, a lot of that could happen on a normal bit of road too. Keep your eyes peeled, don't ride like a retard, don't lane split and you'll be sweet.

You should go to the Pink Ribbon Ride - a breast cancer rundraising ride on the 14th October. Lots of ladies (and men) to meet, and potential riding friends....... you could ride at the back if crowds worry you. There will be plenty of different clubs there. You could also go to the Hyosung shop in Barrys Point Rd, Takapuna as I believe they have a club that does rides.

Ive ridden with a few groups, and when I was still learning they were the most sensible, and you learn a fair amount about riding with sensible experienced riders, rather than other people who are just starting out. That and you learn some sweet new riding routes at the same time.

Hey,
Just moved from west to central, and ride my honda bros over the bridge every day, had my licence since Feb this year and would love to have some people to ride with! I'm 25..:woohoo:

I'm usually fairly busy but I might be keen? Are you just interested in short trips or touring? I do a lot of the latter on my ginny.

Don't suppose you bought that off a guy out west? If you did, it was probably off a work mate of mine who had to sell it after an accident. Nice bike too, if it's the same one.

Yep, same one. Unfortunate about his accident, he was organising an office group ride at the end of last year but was obviously cancelled. A shame not seeing that bike in the carpark any longer, was really quite fond of it. A mate of mine almost bought it too, but luckily for you he was too late. Glad it's still rolling around Auckland though. :)
