View Full Version : Filtering rage!

He he, i was out on the CBR yesterday, in the pouring rain, very windy, riding in the CBD. Filtered past a line of cars and sat at the front.BMW 7 series at front of the que toots his horn a couple of times, but i ignored it. Took off when it went green, not overly fast, and definatly not slow. Look in the mirror and the bimmer is tailgateing very close, so i gave him the one finger salute and kept riding. Next set of lights and he is revving his engine and inching up right behind my wheel, so gave him the finger again, and he gives me two fingers back and can see him mouthing off. Take off at the green at regular pace, bimmer starts backing off then flooring it and jambing on his brakes right behind me, so stopped bike in middle of road and got off bike to "have a word" with the bimmer driver, he swerves around me and takes off, i catch up at the next lights and park bike next to him, get off bike, bimmers doors lock and his window comes down 5cm as he starts to proclaim "whats your problem a$%wipe" i asked what his problew is and he says "you pushed in in front of me at the lights" , "so you endanger my LIFE because i got 1 car ahead of you at the lights" i said (well yelled, with much more colourfull language) . He didnt have a comeback to that and looked away (the old if i cant see you you aint here) and kept looking away while i told him what i thought of him,(again very loudly with colourfull language) he really did not look very comfortable, looked like he was just wanting to sink into his seat. I kept it together and left it at that and rode away. Funny enuf, he waited to let a couple of cars get between me and him and kept his distance.
Im not really into violence, but sometimes people just need to be told when they are being a dick.
How does everyone else react to bike haters? or being threatend by a car?
I keep thinking i maybe over reacted, but my mates rekon i should have done more.
Sorry for the rant,

you were lucky he backed down once you pointed out he was acting like a dick in reaction to a minor ego dent (what real harm does filtering do to the cager?). He must have been a basically reasonable person having a bad reaction and only brave whilst he had a tonne or so of metal to protect him.
You could have *555'd him or an online report of him for dangerous driving so guess he was lucky you only argued with him and seems you got him to see sense :niceone: Anymore would have been too much.

Yea some Wellington drivers can be like that. Not just young ones either, had an old fella try to take Mrs Berg and me off our bikes in Otaki just because we filtered past (legally I might add) much to his unhappiness. Funny thing was, most of the traffic eased the way for us but this guy was watching his mirror and decided, if he had to sit in the traffic, we should have to sit as well.

Have had some people get a bit shitty at myself for filtering to the front, but most of the time I just write it off due to being tired and wanting to get home etc. Guess it's kinda annoying having sat through 4 phases of lights and some cunt on a bike gets to go ahead of you lol.
But actions as decribed in the OP are just disgusting and not on. Was all the agro worth it because of the fact a biker moved to the front....

Not as bad as the pooftah that pushed me of my bike at a petrol station.
After getting the bike off me I went up to him in his car (Locked doors and windows up) and in a fit of anger put my glove through his drivers side window.
Finally calmed down (Thought it best to stop as it would be on camera) and wait for the popo.
As it turned out the driver had been cut off in Upper Hutt by a red bike and took his anger out on me. I had come from the other direction so it couldn't have been me.
Cop asked if I wanted to press charges, I said "as long as I do not get a bill for his broken window I'm fine."
Your action of having a "Word" to the guy is fully justified.

So was I.
But being in full gear I could have done some serious damage to him.

How does everyone else react to bike haters? or being threatend by a car?Lean on his drivers door with your bar end and wiggle the bars whilst you eyeball them.
- It fucks the paint good and proper down to the metal, and it's only a bar end for you to replace
- They can't open the door with a combined 250kg+ jamming it closed
- Let them take off before you, then they can't plate you
I'm against destroying other peoples stuff on the whole, so only do it if they've earnt it.

First thing is tell him it's perfectly legal to filter. Most? car drivers don't seem to know that, and that is where a lot of the agro stems from.

If you're going to filter, it's going to happen. I understand your anger at being endangered and I've been there, done that and in hindsight believe I have got away with some unconscious adrenaline reactions that could have ended badly.
These days I just use the capabilities of the bike to put some distance between me and whatever bell-end is having an ego meltdown. I'm not saying I use excess speed to do it, just keep manoeuvring til I'm in safe road space. That has included pulling over and letting them go.
In the past, my adrenaline and ego was reacting to their adrenaline and ego. If the driver was on P or in some steroid rage, I could have ended up in hospital (or the mortuary) after taking them on.
Yes, they are being an absolute cock. But at least one of us needs to be the grown-up and since I cannot make it them, I have to try to make it me. YMMV.

I have encountered a few cases of cager road rage, but I usually just get the hell out of there, or if there is lot's of traffic I just stop and pull over,as it's not worth the potential of getting knocked of your bike. The same goes for tailgaters as well,it makes me really nervous when a cager follows me to closely.

Thanks for the replys everyone,
sometimes i think im a magnet for this type of behavior, and the adrenilan rush of the confrontation gets to me and sometimes make poor decisions. A month or so ago i got cut off while lane splitting then got given a finger, so i punched his side mirror as i came thru, in hindsight, and as pointed out by the mrs (who was pillion at the time) he only had to jerk his wheel to the side and hit the gas "by accident" to cause both us a good deal of injury, but i didnt think of that at the time
Plus im probably helping the stereotype of the angry street bike rider with loud exhaust and bad attitude

yes, that is what i should have told him, a bit of education would have been the one, instead of my going nuts with profanity and yelling that probably didnt cover my point too well.

you have three options, kick in a headlight/taillight/head and have himhate bikers, and take it out onthe next one he sees.
or
Try and reason and explain to him that you're entitled to do what you did by law and suggest he go and research it
or
accept that some people are just assholes, ignore it, and get on with your life. Have a guy like that behind you in a car on the road, and wind him up by flipping him off and you wont win the fight, youll get sqaushed. Its really not worth the aggro most of the time.

I had a filter rage incident a while back; the knob-end stopped next to me at a subsequent red light and started to abuse me roundly through his passenger window (two lane road), I just asked him why he cared so much if I was in front of him or not and got a completely blank look, I guess he was expecting a yelling match.
Then I told him to grow up and stop acting like a fucking 3 year old.

Was coming up to a roundabout and had split up to a few cars behind the roundabout, had a van that was behind me (there was alot of space where i pulled into) come past me and tap me with his wing mirror, sped up to get away and the fucker does it again.
By now i am shitting myself because my exit options were limited, he started screaming at me through his window and we exchanged some friendly words. Was so tempted to smash his mirror or kick his van door but thought that the kind of driver that would tap me with his mirror would most likely do something worse when provoked.
Ended up managing to pull off into the side street and then go on my merry way,

The thing is, these people who get pissed off because we filter to the front just haven't thought it out. Unless you're on such a crap-arse bike that it holds them up when the lights turn green (or you stall it, which I've done a couple of times), the nett affect on them is zip. It's Eggs Zachary as if you'd done nothing: you haven't slowed them down, or cost them a place in the queue, because (a) you've gone around the queue, and (b) by the time they've reacted to the light change, you're on the other side of the intersection.

Filtering rage is merely the infantile reaction of jealousy in response to the observation of the expedited advancement of a motorcyclist relative to that of the subject driver impeded by the traffic congestion to which they find themselves subjected.

You want to be careful giving the fingers because it might incite him to smash you. From experience "he was getting smart bro" is a valid defence in NZ.

Spot on. But some bikers need to differentiate between filtering and queue jumping - and there is a difference.
If you can filter to the front at the lights and get the jump on the queue, you're not holding anyone up. Those drivers who object to it are just being childishly petulant.
I recently had a situation in the car where a biker roared up alongside the line of cars moving through the lights, by (illegally) using the empty turn-only lane. He then forced his way in between me and the car in front, and instantly started aggressively gesticulating for me to back off and give him room. He was quite obviously rather indignant when I chose not to do so - he's probably still raging about the ignorant cager...

I have had a few people get upset while filtering. Its mostly people who have paid $90,000 for a fast car, but get to spend hours every day parked on what we jokingly call highways.
But for everyone who has been upset, there have been
~ a hundred cars pull to the left to let me past, kids and mums on the footpath giving me thumbs up and gesturing me to honk my horn,
~old guys in ancient Mitsubishi's flashing indicators to help me past, old riders no doubt
~chicks in tourist buses flashing their tits until they realise I'm (a) enjoying it too much and (b) grandad
~ Normal kiwis smiling and being nice

I hear what you are saying, i even said a page or two back that i will probably get my beats if i go off at everyone, im definatly not a tuff guy, and i dont see myself as one. It took a lot of provoking to get me to stop and have "words". In hindsight i should have *555 the guy, but i had to tell that guy whats up, i mean, slaming the brakes 10cm off my back wheel while going down hill in the rain is quite dangerous towards me. I do admire you guys that can just let it go, i would like to get to that stage, and i am trying to improve my quick fuse.
My guess is it wont take long.....
Cheers dude. Yep, im gonna get my face smashed in one of these days by someone, be it on my bike and losing my temper, or doing part time document serving (that can get a bit sticky sometimes).
I just hope the bimmer driver thinks twice before harrasing bikers next time

Guess you have to be a rider to really understand and appreciate filtering. I've found most drivers quite good when I've done that, and lane splitting; never had anyone abuse me. In fact most dickheads I've met on the road have been moving along in "normal" traffic.
Post 7 does point out though that there truly is a mentality alive and well in NZ that if a bike rider pisses a driver off then the next rider they encounter is likely to be the target of their anger. Rational behaviour just doesn't seem to be in these people's vocabulary; their grievance (imagined, or otherwise) sees other riders bear the brunt.

I guess the guy in the beemer was also lucky he didnīt mis-judge and knock the guy off his bike, equally lucky the guy on the bike was fairly reasonable about it. Would he do the same to a patched up gang member?
No excuses for what he did, its not the same thing as a car accidentally cutting him off or pulling out in front of him without looking properly. If the cops had seen it would have been dangerous driving charge.

Knocked an old guy to the ground a year because he threw a fucking LOG right in front of me from the footpath.
Dunno where his alpha as fuck attitude went when I brought attempted manslaughter to air. Kinda got a short tolerance for that shit, I might be a grumpy cunt but fist to face is last resort, in my books.

Reading this story brings back my own memories of a very similar incident with an asshole in a BMW. After filtering to the front he overtakes me after we take off again and stops dead in the middle of the road. I stop and cautiously manouvre around him and he guns it and swerves towards me. I wasnt hanging around to find out what his problem was. Was still quite new to riding at that stage and was my very first sort of "they are really out to kill you" moment. Cursed myself for the rest of the day for not having the presence of mind to get his licence plate and go to the cop shop.
