I made more prize money than Chris Haldane was winning when he was racing his Ducati Superbike...in fact 5th place paid the same as first place in F1 from memory.

In one of last years Fast bikes magazine they did an article on the XR1200 race series that was at all the BSB rounds I think.
Looked like fun, you purchase the bike and kit off a Harley dealer and away you go. Wasnt too bad of a price either.

Imagine the pain of the guys that had to go home one year after Wanganui when I finished 3rd in Bears on my lil old 883 behind Robert Holden on his 916 Superbike, and Rodney O'Conner on his 748, and tell their mates what they got their asses whipped by then!!! Sad for them.

Awesome. Bring this class back please.
Ducatilover I really suggest you test ride an 883. They are damn good fun, and not as underpowered as I suspected.
But I guess that is the thing about perceptions. I was pleasantly surprised when I rode an 883. But absolutely gutted when I rode a 916. The 916 felt like 250 would lap it. But most of this was due to me putting it on a high honor. I gave it a perception it would never achieve. I thought it would do 300kmh and handle like a dream. I forgot it was 20 years old now.
The 883 I hoped was faster than a steam train. Where in reality it was as good as an old 600. Much better than I expected.

I took one from W(h)anganui to Wellington, had all these "cool" upgrades. It was a crap bike. Nice seat and looked cool, as a Sporty does. I hated it so much I woke up early the next morning to hate it more.
I've ridden a few Harleys and I can't say I like them, personal taste I suppose.
I thought it was massively underpowered, until I rode some other cruisers in the same size range, it wasn't too gutless. I'd take a Honda VF750 Magna any day. Image is overrated :Police:

I wouldn't be able to get my ZZR600 (in working condition) around there that fast, I wouldn't get anything around there that fast and I'm not concerned, I just hate the way the 883 sporty I rode...rode. It was crap, it's the only 883 sporty I have ridden, the other was a 1200 kitted gutless turd.

Low Horsepower and torque per liter. The fact that it's not a sports bike. I'm happy to carry on disliking them and it's okay because I have ridden several and throbbing cruisers don't float my boat, I like sports tourers and nekkid sport bikes. I'm keen to have a go on anything though and am not saying all Harleys are poo, just the few I have ridden.
So who's going to give me a go on one to change my mind?

883's and the Hyosung Cup, Both one make classes and provide great racing if there are lot's of entries. Can't remember any other one make classes in motorcycle racing at the moment. Car racing has done it many times over the years with great success. Mini's and Suzuki Swifts etc. I think it's an opportunity that motorcycle racing has missed. I wish the Hyosung Cup all the very best. I guess Protwins comes close with the SV650's. 1.19s or 2.19s? Not an issue for me. Some of the best racing I've ever seen was watching K100 karts at Manfield. 30 plus all going hell for leather. Hilarious.
As for dissing the 916, well I personally think it's a bloody brilliant bike. But then I guess it's a personal thing.

No. And no...just one at a time else the others would vibrate off! Fuck, one year at Puke, 3 laps to go and my fuel cap vibrated off. Trying to ride round there with my left hand over the fuel filler, as the venturi effect was sucking it out and blinding me.
After the race...when stories were being told, one of the guys warned me that I should have duct tape ove my front master cyl too, as they come off. Thought the cunt was having me on, as I'd never had it come loose. Guess what happened in race two? Thought I was losing it, as I'd taped my fuel cap on. Thought fuck that shit in my eyes is hurting a tad. Looked over and sure enough...master cyl cap was flapping in the breeze.
Last lap...heading into the hairpin and wondering about trying to outbrake Bruce. Is there any fluid left...will I simply sail off the end of the straight when the lever comes right back to the bar? Funny as. Took my fucking eyes days to get over that weekend.

Don't cry because I said something bad about a 916.
If you read the sentences completely you would have noticed I talked about the perceptions about the bikes.
916 is not a bad bike. I feel it simply doesn't hold up to the pedestal people put it on. But I guess that is the age old saying "Never meet your childhood hero's - they will only disappoint you".
To add to the list of disappointments while I am at it:
- Jag XJ12
- Kawasaki Z900
- Yamaha RD350
Not bad vehicles - but I was expecting much more. My expectations were set to high due to what people had told me.
As for you comment about the Hyosung cup. This class is also good. Real grass roots stuff.
Ducati owners will never enter because they can't stand the fact that the machine is going fine, its them that is slow :bleh::jerry:

Gawd, not often I feel sorry for bikes/cars but I feel sorry for those machines you've ridden and driven....what a waste. It's nothing to do with "what people have told you" it's your own inability to put them in their correct context.
The Z900 is coming up to 40 years old, 230kg's and 80-ish hp, what would you expect? But back in the day it was absolutely unrivalled.
And the 916 was never about straight line speed it was designed to beat 750 4's not the GSXR/ZX1100 gruntmasters, but get it on it's ear in a fast sweeper and nothing could compare. And awesome design and engineering for the time.
Please, stay away from the classics.
Weak crack from the sidelines against Ducati racers, Johan Aberg, Nick Prestidge, Malcolm Foster, Wendy Harding and Damian Mackie (just to name a few Ducati racers off the top of my head) all prove you couldn't be more wrong.
