I have decided to get my Bike licence before I turn Forty, Mid-life crisis?, Maybe lol.
I have a Suzuki Intruder 250, and have been practising the necessary things for the basic handling test, Trying to do the cone weave to the required specifications is a joke on a bike as long and big as that, so I'm gonna go for it on something smaller, save stressing out about it. My husband gave it a go and he couldn't do it either. Now to find a nice small bike to beg , borrow or steal.:Police: Love the site  Cheers Newbi.

First up and in the begining....
Choose the style of bike of which you think/feel is going to suit you.
Most importantly, choose a bike that you are very comfortable with....
A GN250 is pretty bullet proof as a learner..and from that, you can advance to any style you wish to settle on.
If you start on a cruiser, most likely you will stay with the cruiser style of bike, which is fine if thats what you want.
Welcome to KB and good luck with the BHS, is a piece of piss.
$1600?...cant go wrong http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/tourers/auction-398365664.htm (and no I dont know the seller:no:)

dunno about up there, but down here, the BHStester supplies the bike, usually either a ginny 125, or a sorpio 225, much easier to do the come weave on.rign around and see which ones provide the bike. Theyll usuallygive you a few minutes prior to the test to feel the bike out anyway.
And dont stress it, most of the people I know passed it first time with no practice.

Hi Newbi and congrats on taking up the challenge.
You are certainly on the right path. Cruisers are for looking good and cruising; mostly in straight lines. Just my opinion and as you can tell, I don't really like them.
A Suzuki GN250 or a Yamaha 250 Scorpio are great 'learn ride safely' options

That's fair enough, but I love mine, well at the moment anyway, who knows what bike I might move onto, I'm pretty short so my choices may be a bit limited.

Hey Newbi - I am a short-arse too and I don’t think you will be that limited to be honest…... unless you are super-midgetised. Some bikes can be lowered to short-arse mode, and if done correctly it won't affect handling that much/if at all.
I am on my tippy-toes on the Triple and learnt pretty quickly where to park/stop etc. Although there was a momentary lapse on Sunday :pinch:
So you get whatever bike tickles your fanny.
Good luck with your BHS and your mid-life crisis ;)

I don't really have a mid-life crisis, I just LOVE bikes, Had one as a teenager and loved it. Just realising how short life is , get out and do what ya want while ya can I say. My 17 yr old son wants to get his licence too, which is fine by me:shifty:

Hey Newbi,
Decided to start riding before my 40th also for similar reasons. Got myself the Yamaha Scorpio. It's very easy to ride.
I did my BHS on the bike the trainer provided. Was easy enough...I think it was a Keeway 150 or 200.
Good luck!

Send an e-mail to Steve or Dawn at: info@ridertraining.co.nz they are the best people to help you out. They also supply bikes that are easy to do course on.

Oh yes, now is good.
I'm living it at the moment & gone over to the dirty (smoky) side as a consequence & laughing my scrawny butt off.
Good luck & enjoy.

Congrads newbi anyone of the GN series, 125 or 250 for the BHS. They sharp & agile for the cones, just look at the next cone rather then the one you are trying to go around otherwise you'll get disoriented.
Simple rule about big bikes, if you can't pick it up or you can't balance it at the lights then it's not right for you.

I don't have any issues with my bike, balancing at lights etc, I purposely got a bike that I could sit astride with feet on ground for that reason, It's just the weaving through the effing cones that causes me grief. Maybe they need to change distances between cones depending on what size bike ya ride. I'd love to know exactly what situation on the road is going to need me to weave 6 times to avoid it anyway, WTF?
