where is he - welcome to take my old girl for a spin if he is down this way to give him some idea - she is a state of the art '05 (basically an '87 with new paint job i am told)
just re read your post - he is not trying to decide betwixt the two he just wants a KLR? - smart man that mate of yours! - anyway if he is down here and wants a spin just for fits and giggles..................

Is he still your mate?
and no matter how much persuasion you offered, he still wants one?

Not for me to tell him what to buy. The KLR fits his interpretation of adventure. As you know we all interpret it differently. KLR is more pillion friendly than most others also if you rule out the F650. Plus I was very impressed with the KLR leant to me when down in Nelson. Thanks Padmei.

+ one double bollocks I hit some hard trails on my old KLR and it smoked them no worries, and I was comfy on the Highways.
the KLR is the best under $10 k bike on the market period.

If I didn't already have the best Adv bike ever made then I would seriously consider a KLR. I would get a KLR over a DR.

Yep - I'm going to pull the trigger on one in the morning.
They are $AU7,995 ride away for an '11 in Brisbane and it will really suit for in between my new gigs and where I'm living now.

I take it he's keeping an eye on trademe? Some newish minters have gone for $6K. Some of the owners of earlier ones are asking tooo much when comparing them to the same year DRs - still some owners don't really want to sell.

You've obviously never gone riding with anyone with a KLR then.

prick :girlfight:
but it does highlight the major problem with a klr offroad - lack of ground clearance. its also a teeny bit heavy to drag on its side out of a deep muddy rut
its still the most fun bike I've ever owned (although I tend to think that about whatever bike I've last ridden) :woohoo:

Pads your bike really surprised me at how well it did the tracks we went on. Bent handlebars, bald tyre and silly screen included.
I am keeping an eye on TM and am letting him know the options. He aint got no internet but as he's a trained killer I try not to hassle him about it too much.

Job done. Hopefully picking it up on Saturday.
I could have bought a DR for the same coin, and it would be a more versatile bike, but the real decider for me was 'which one would I rather ride Brisbane to Sydney?' which is what I'm likely to do more often than a hard-core ADV ride. (I'm quite comfortable doing dirt on the KLR too.)

Yeah mate - I did make a bit of a production of leaving - short story is the Mrs applied for a job in Mt Wellington and got offered a more senior one in Brisbane.
I'm now the Australian Correspondent for KR and have picked up some work for the Aus mags as well.
Most of the new bike releases happen over here now anyhoo.
Bit of luck I'll be back for the Burt Munro.

theres no problem doing long distances on a DR....an hours riding and all pain below ya waist is gone  its only 1/2hr on a stock 690 seat :gob:

I never really acquired one, but I make a gag out of chance, dance, France and chips anyway.
Nobody has laid a sheep-shagger line on me yet either.
