In my experience, walking is far more dangerous than riding a bike.

First it was a ligament, now it is a broken ankle

I am giving up walking for good!

Its the white boot that will look out of place...
Could paint it black but, when the walkable cast gets fitted, maybe they can use black and save us the trouble?
Even a Hi-Viz vest wouldn't have saved this one...:corn:

I have had more ACC claims for injuries sustained while ballroom dancing than I have ever had from motorcycle accidents. (Course, errrr, most of my more serious accidents happened before ACC was invented...)

Reckon I should stop dancing..?

Nah - hell no - then I wouldn't get to hold on close to all those delicious ladies, eh...

Fucking Oww. I've sprained both ankles several times, including twice ripping anterior ligaments clean off the bone. I've still got bone chips floating around both joints.

You've got my sympathy, it bloody hurts.

No, it was dark is all, and no lights meant I did not see the hole until I stepped on the side of it. It happened at Ruakaka Motorcamp, no street lights to be seen LOL.

Never broken mine but I'd imagine a simple break could be reasonably painless.

Significant soft tissue damage in areas where there's little room for swelling fucking hurts big time.

You've really started a major upheaval.

Now ACC will get a report going on the prevention of walking and pothole injuries.

They will start an investigation on how they can tax walking because it's obviously dangerous.

And to top it off all potholes will be required to have self illumination during the hours of darkness if not lit by street lights!!

He is being wonderful! I am not good at being dependant, but as I have no choice a the moment, I have decided to accept my lot gracefully and ask for all the help I need. I am blessed with wonderful friends who have offered to drive me where I need to be, my youngest daughter who lives in town will go fetch for me during the day if she is not at work. I can see myself getting very spoilled.

Well, I can attest to the pain, when I did it I knew immediately I had done damage, I could not put my foot on the ground and it doubled in size in minutes.

Right now it is sore (I have a couple of Tramadol on board though) but manageable. I am not allowed to weight bare on it, so my arms are sore from using crutches, I am not fit for that you see :baby:

I expect things will settle in a few days when the swelling settles. I also munted my left knee/calf which is swollen and has got quite a bit of skin missing which is not helping. Loose chip seal tends to do that with out ATGATT  Track pants were no match for it

New from ACC

All walkers must wear ski style boots to prevent twisted or broken ankles.
All potholes must be outlined in reflective paint 50mm wide.

Bad luck Mom, as they say ,get well soon just don't let on so Maha has to continue to make the hot drinks

Well I'll be a pickled jellied eel! Yes indeedy Mike is a biker of CB1300 fame, he rode Maha's and rated it good enough for him. We have been going to Ruakaka for many years now, I was not dissing the camp or its management in anyway shape or form, quite the opposite infact.

Mike picked me up and drove me back to our site, Ann-marie called the ambulance and directed to us. If you are going to do something as dumb as break an ankle at least having folk around to help makes it seem not so bad.

Yeah, a lovely 650 Bandit. It will be a few weeks before I will be riding her again I am afraid. I went and had the cast changed today, still too swollen for a proper, walking one, so I cope.Got some decent drugs today, so pain is finally ok :sunny:

I had a call from ACC yesterday just getting the big picture of how this is going to impact my life. I expect to get a call from my case manager today or tomorrow. It appears that ACC will actually fund my transport to work once I am fit. It will depend on whether my work will take me back on crutches (I cant see why not) and even if I can do 2 days a week, it will make the world of difference to them. Payroll is a huge job Monday/Tuesday and if I can get in there and do those 2 days it will really help them out.

Want to be my case manager?

I bought plums on the weekend, for some reason they were really cheap, considering they are out of season. I intended to make Jam on Sunday, well that was not a happening thang. I could not see them go to waste though, so today, I have managed to get them in a pot, and cooked. Then Maha came home and we turned them into jam :sunny: He is a real whizz in the jam making department.

He is in the process of cooking tea, and at some stage he will help me have a shower :pinch:

I am amazed at the support I am being shown. I guess you cant argue a snapped bone, but all the same the speed with which things are being organised is amazing.

I have an in home assessment tomorrow, to gauge what hours help I need around the place. Maha has taken over all the cooking duties as well as my personal cares, on top of his job that is more than enough! In the mean time I have been approved 5 hours a week home help to cover off the washing and cleaning stuff.

I have an at work assessment on September 19th with a view to getting me back to work as soon as I am fit. They are a little pushy around that, but I am firm, I wont go back to work until I no longer need opiate based pain relief, I have to have my wits about me in my job, besides it is up to my Doctor to determine when I am fit to go back.

ACC will pay for my transport to work, not taxis as I am too far away from work, but will pay expenses for someone to drive me to work, until I am able to do so myself.

All this is just a few days since I hurt myself. Amazing!

For the first time I am claiming "properly" the response has been fantastic! Lets see how it continues...

Anything is better than sitting home all day trust me.

That happened on Monday, today I was assessed at my work place to see what extras I need to be able to do my job. Nothing really, I drive a desk

But, I cant drive a car at the moment, so I need transport. I have just had my travel to work approved for 3 trips to work, and 2 home. Excellent, I dont object in the least to paying for my usual transport costs, so this will work out fine :sunny:

Only problem? It is only approved for 2 weeks

Excellent, next week and the week after I can go to work, after that I am not sure what will happen, I guess I will sit at home again :pinch:

I have volunteerily opted for physio on my ankle prior to getting the cast off. I went to see my old mate Scott. He just shook his head at me. I took a couple of ligaments out of this ankle about 10 years ago, and it took forever to come right.

He tells me to forget about the previous injury, for this is NOTHING by comparison :woohoo:

I now have some excercises to do to recover the lost muscle, despite being in plaster still, and he reckons all things being equal I will be driving a week after the plaster comes off :sunny:

As far as riding Millie north, easy, peasy as long as the swelling is under control :scooter: It WILL BE!

I am happy as a pig in shit tonight :sunny:

I can see his associate on Nov 11th :wings:

Hopefully when they cut this cast off it will be all better :sunny: Another 3 weeks will make the world of difference

In case this is not true and I need surgery :pinch: there is still time for it to be healed enough to be out of plaster by Xmas :wari:

We were planning a trip around the East Cape Labour Weekend, put that on hold due to my specialness. So we booked into the camp knowing I would be free of plaster.

I am not free of plaster, so tonight I have just reserved the Disabled bathroom facilities at the camp for the weekend and I will take my shower chair with me :pinch:

All I hope for now is that ACC will come to the party and provide transport that we cant do, so that I can get to work every day. Amazingly enough that has been a bit of a problem up to now

First bit no. I have been encouraged to weight bear as soon as I could, it was only the day before that I actually struck up enough balls to "walk". I was told to be guided by my pain levels. If it hurt at night I had done too much, there fore dont walk was the instruction.

As far as why it has not healed? How long is a piece of string? There are many, many reasons why it may not have done and no doubt a smart arse will find reasons why my ankle has not healed up. You got any idea?

It appears I can "walk" , albeit slowly, completely unaided and inside the house. My ankle feels really weird in bed with no support, but it is getting better every day.

I went out today for the first time sans crutches, with a moon boot and it was OK!

Small things make for HUGE enjoyment and celebration.

I did something today I have not done in 2 months. I made a list.

A very short list to be fair, but a list all the same. It was of things I wanted to buy.

I was driven home from work as usual, and walked up the stairs. I am tired, I started work at my normal time today.

I put my bag down and walked back down the stairs. Walking down stairs should rather be described as creeping crab like, as the moon boot does not allow proper bending of the ankle and you have to go down sideways. I walked to the car, sat down in the drivers seat and took off my boot!

I drove to the shops, put my boot back on, walked in and purchased the items on my list, went back to the car, took the boot off and drove home :wings:

What a strange feeling, still need a bit of strengthening of the old ankle/calf to feel totally comfortable about driving to work, but I am now independantly mobile :sunny:

I had to go back to the doctors for a further medical certificate for work. I am fit and ready so am wanting to go back full time as of next week. The next question is when can I start driving again. It is all very well getting driven around everywhere but the loss of independance really bites, and I have had enough of it.

I have been excercising hard out to regain movement in my ankle and am really happy with where it is at. Turns out the doctor is really happy too, so I have a full clearance to start driving again and can start back at work full time next week. Only rules are...

Wear proper supportive shoes to drive, and put the boot back on when I get to work to walk around in. I have been told to take it easy too

High friggen five! I am mobile once again. All I have to do now is get my bike boot back on and build up some muscle tone and I will be riding once again :wings:

Imagine taking off your footwear, and walking down the hard pressed white sand to paddle in the water. I have been for the past 10 weeks. Yesterday I DID IT! What a fantastic feeling, very cold water rushing around my ankle, sand between my toes, bliss...

Feel like a fraud coming into this thread Sooooooooo late, but hey. Mom, it never rains but it pours aye, but as usual you've simply gotten up and given it an upper cut, well done on the rehab and getting back out there. Now get back on da Millie asap. K.

I tell ya, my bike riding is very, very sadly missed. I can at least drive the poxy car now, though even that proved a challenge the other day in the shittly, city traffic. I simply need to build more strength so I can sustain the throttle a little bit then brake, then throttle then brake, over and over and over again all the while busting a boil to get up the outside and filter

Another X-ray today. Apparently ankles are very, very slow to heal. Nearly 11 weeks and still the fracture is clearly visible. There is however some healing happening, albeit slowly. So I still have to take it easy...

Wonder when I can get a clearance to ride :devil2:

I had another x-ray today, and it is not healed :(

Still looks alot like it did the day I broke it really :weird:

Investigating options so I can at least get in the water when we go camping next weekend :niceone:

I have worn out my moonboot.

It was a bit shabby before 2 weeks camping, but now it is simply dangerous

The sole is seperating from the actual boot at the toe, creating a really dangerous trip hazard. I cant stop myself from pitching forward onto my face if I really catch it  The few times I have caught it have sent me doing "BIG STEPS" and praying

I also have worn a hole in the liner <_< Velco hooks are not that comfy on your pathetically white and sensitive skin :pinch:

So today I rang my ACC care co-ordinator and explained myself.

She was surprised.

You dont wear these things out.

Well yes you do, if you actually follow your doctors instructions and keep mobile. I have done everything I can think of to keep active, and try to keep muscles sort of working. She told me to go back where I got it from and get a replacement. OK, an out patients clinic at North Shore Hospital? Just how long would it take to get an appointment there? She agreed that was not an option, so simply said, buy a new one and we will reimburse you :gob:

So, I have a new boot on order - I hope it is the racing variety

One of the women at work had this most lovely pair of shoes on the other day. I thought about stealing them when she was not looking (probably would have needed to bash her to get her attention elsewhere mind) then I realised I could not wear them anyway *sigh*

Yeah, sucks at the moment, I HAVE to be sooooooooo good LOL. Thanks caseye, I AM getting better. The last xray said "the partial union is progressing but not complete". I took that as a big positive, as before the comments were more along the lines of "there has been very little improvement etc..."

Yes indeedy folks, one hardly worn moon boot surplus to requirements :first:

Had an xray today, and amazingly enough, it has finally healed. 5 months and 1 week later I can start my rehabilitation at last :niceone:

I can not beieve the time it has taken to mend, but as they say, good things take time :sunny:

Physio starts asap and back on my beloved Millie in no time :wings:

Doc reckons it is as good as new and wont break again unless I put as much force through it as I did to break it the first time :pinch: Not a chance of that happening anytime soon

I can not seem to wipe the grin off my face

Gee Millie enjoyed that :innocent: She was a tiny bit rusty to start with, but by the time we got to Wainui she was back in the groove :sunny:

SH16 was fun, went for a wee slip on a tar snake, oops. Woodcocks is in really crap condition in places, stupid pea metal :pinch:

Ankle was fine, bum a bit sore on the bad side, a bit of cramp in my calf at the beginning. It does not like using the rear brake, might adjust it up a tad to assist.

Apart from that it was a fabulous first ride out, Mangawhai for lunch tomorrow methinks :scooter:

10am...;)
I had a couple of rear wheel slips on w/cocks...one on a bit of dirt and the other on tar (really hot out there today) but they tend to be pretty cool moments most of the time.
Woodcocks was really busy with bikes.
Spankin' day to be out on the bike..1hr 20mins only but, first outting on the bike after five months.
