Congrats on the bike...there's nothing wrong with the XT

Suggest give Cycletreads a call or check their website

You might be able to run a wider rear tyre (120mm wide instead of the standard 100mm) but check first. If you are looking for a set, at that sort of money, your best bet would prob be Kenda K761 trail tyre. (rear 120/80-18 and front 90/90-21)

There is a giant dual purpose tyre thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/31920-Tyre-choice-for-adventure-riding-(Mixing-road-and-off-road)), but it's mainly focused on larger bikes, and the less roady end of the tyre spectrum.

For general on-road and gravel duty I like the TW301/302 combo. They worked well on my super sherpa, which is a very similar bike to the XT.

Pirelli MT40's aren't sold new, but if you can find them in the dusty corners of tyre racks, or at wreckers, they are a good tyre, and a bit roadier than the TW's. I've picked up a new set for $80 from a wrecker before.
