I had a Dommie for three years and loved it, great machine but it pooed the camshaft and rockers, other than that Honda solid.

Wasn't big money to do the cam and rockers either so all worked out well.

RMX250 would be a good bet, there was a road legal on TM down Masterton way a week ago.

As you can see from the replies there is a different interpretation of what you wanted. When you said enduro I would have suggested what WW recommended - when you say you like the look of the dommie you're in a different genre really.
What do ya want to do with it?
I spent a good deal of time looking for a cheap smaller offroad bike but they're all pretty much overpriced or in need of maintenance which can swalllow the dollars.

What do ya wanna do with it?

I do like the look of a Dommie. I like a bike I can load up and do some adv rides. Comming off DR650 was hard as it was a good versitile bike. Would get another one but budget forbids at the mo. The reason i mentioned Enduro was so it can do wee bit more then just gravel roads

XR650L - great machines - like XR600's but electric start: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=404087298
Or a DR350 - no road legal ones on TM right now but they come up quite often.

I have actually seen the odd KTM 520 EXC come up for that money, but unfortunately most people have their 520 prices far over what they should be despite 520s being good bikes

Yes CRM. That is the one I was looking at. 1988 is wee bit old for one these days, but then again my budget is small too. I saw a nice 03 KTM 400 with a motar kit (road legal) for $3500, but it went pretty quickly.
Or shall I say, I took my time thinking about it.

This one only set me back about $2500 including the WP front, XR shock etc and it seems ok.
And fat cunts can ride them, they are reknown for doing epic 2 up journeys.246485

Seems a good price with the tank and exhaust. New they would surely cost well over $1k?

Cheers

At some stage it will get parted from it's current owner, but it's not likely to be in the next few months.

Nah, I've just finished building it.
Easy enough to do with a few basic skills and a shed full of junk tho.

They are out there....I know of a bike just traded that may go for $3500, Husqvarna Te570....Needs a bit of cosmetic touching up, but will be awesome. I actually have my eye on it right now. Keep looking and ask around...It may just jump out at you quicker than you think...:) Buy it, save some more and then when you can, do it up and work on farkling it bit by bit, rather that all at once and blowing the budget!
