Lots of discussion on the two together topping the no GST limit... win some loose some though the Safari might be there all by itself in which case the more the merrier..
Have you looked at justgastanks.com ? Sometimes cheaper IIRC, but then I don't need one so why am I even here ???

Justgastanks won't ship Safari tanks to NZ or Aus. And I can confirm that one safari tank is enough to top the no GST limit

Just emailed them both, I believe NZ falls under the "no freight to Australia" umbrella agreement. I have just emailed them, hopdefully they do, aside from the super fast service the price difference is $688 (JGT) to $832 (Safari) - both less freight

Safari (http://www.safaritanks.com.au) don't, have you looked at JGT (http://www.justgastanks.com)?

Here is an option from a TDM rider, Gateman on the Yamaha TDM riders forum on advrider.
Seems a good idea and only clipped on when needed. Got to be cheaper than a Safari tank.

Just have to chime in here & say the extra volume of the safari is worth so much more than the one off extra expense of the GST & freight etc-
ie When I look at all that fuel & not having to worry about fuel stops every hour -thats priceless.

Agreed, regardless of price I will be getting the safari tank, it just would have been nicer paying $688 rather than $832 for the exact same item...

Safari are arseholes.
But they are building a fairing for the DR650...
Ummm...
They're good arseholes...

Have a look at Nomad tanks, I have their 5L unit, it straps/bolts over the rear gard and is plumbed into the main gas line with a tap, all supplied. It also allows you to choose between having it along or not if just commuting.

Cheers guys but I'm decking it out on a kind of no expense spared scenario based on a build plan that I spent a truck load of time researching and putting together, quite looking forward to bringing it to fruition. I'm getting the 28 litre safari + the Wolfman racks and fuel/water system giving me 32 litres of fuel capacity and 4 litres of water capacity... Setting the bike up not only for hassle free NZ adventure riding but also for a Northern Territory / Western Australia trip next year

looks like Safari and JGT are just protecting and respecting each others territories. Fair enough in my book.
I agree with padmei about not having to worry about running out of gas all the time, its a pita when you wanna go up a new road but not sure if you will get back or worse have to turn back before you know where it ends:angry:.
The build sounds great advgd:woohoo: Keep us posted.

I foresee a rise in the use of freight forwarders...

Will do mate, however everything is under wraps till it is 100% complete, after that I'll do a final build report. Early days at this stage:
Day 1: a nice shiny new 2011 DRZ400E was delivered to my door today. I couldn't resist having a ride so went out for a quick 30 minute blast, bloody love it :headbang: but it is now in the garage being severely stripped ready for the big ADV rebuild...

I have never used RotoPaxs before so this will be the first time, from the research I have done they have a very good reputation for durability. This is the Wolfman setup ordered to accompany the 28 litre tank:

If quiet is the aim then my one is no good, it is as loud as buggery, pretty sure it has been modified by the Suzuki guys when they unrestricted the carb because that's what I asked them to do to the 250 when I bought it from them. I am sure isn't stock db. Loud droning bloody thing, did my head in even on that first 30 minute ride, can't wait to get it off and get the FMF on there
If you still do want it Padmei let me know

Hmmm this will be interesting. I actually like loud pipes but mine is ridiculously loud - Nordie measured it the other week & it was about 1000 reicters.
I was talking to another mate with the same bike who had a FMF pipe & his (well his mrs' really)was just as loud if not louder.
I wouldn't mind catching up next time I'm down in Chch & seeing if it is as loud.
I want to quieten mine down but don't think there is any really good way apart from going stock.
Doing a bit of maintenace on mine tonite - fluids etc & not looking forward to wrestling the full tank of gas of it.:violin:
Do you know any wy of getting some coolant into the resoivoir? All the tubes are pretty small to try to pour fluid down.

You should be able to do some research on the DRZ muffler and build up the part that has been removed/modified. It should be pretty straight forward for a Kiwi DIY guy like yourself :msn-wink:
This this insert option (http://www.bboffroad.com.au/drz_400.htm) could be worth researching db levels

He is buying these from Just gas Tanks or somewhere similar. The prices are approx the same but I got mine less price and shipping with the exchange rate, plus I note ho doesn't have the Husqvarna, which IMS do in-fact stock. The service is good, the build quality is good, they hold gas, don't leak, so that's a plus right :) OH, and they sure as hell increase your range :)

Yeah fitting the bracket was a real pain, seems a bit more stable when its full of fuel but I might make a support for around the frame , I had a look at the stealy website for a bash plate for the xt and don,t think they make one so will keep looking around and maybe find one thats not going to cost the earth....

forget it, the one I found was in Europe with a Aus distributor. 4-6 weeks turnaround and over $400 NZD...Makes the 50kph, give way signs a good prospect I say :) If you are going to find one, it will be Europe. Most of the bash plates are for the older Tenere, not the later xt600e. The bike that was for sale in Queenstown had one, I enquired. It came from UK. I followed up on the maker and will try to find it for you. I gave up once I got the price and time factor to deliver it.
