View Full Version : What happened to cheap tank bags?

5 years ago I bought a VCan magnetic tank bag for about $40 new from a shop. The main zip has finally given out but it's had a lot use and on the whole I've been very happy with it. I'm looking for a replacement but haven't been able to find anything a decent size for under $100 and a lot are much more than that. While for most things bike related I'm happy to shell out for quality, all I need out of a tank bag is a couple of magnets, some fabric and a zip. Any ideas where I might find something at a reasonable price?

Dunno how well it will work,
maybe a cheap smallish ruck sack and take the magnet inserts out of the old tank back put them in the ruck sack?
Could be a cheap idea to try.
Or maybe get the zip repaired/replaced?

I suspect trying to replace a zip would be more hassle than it's worth. The magnets are removable though so I might try placing them along the bottom of another bag on the tank. The problem with that will be that without seperate compartments they're going to clump together a lot.

Yeah, I saw that. I'd rather buy new for maximum time before it wears out but I'll probably get that one if there's nothing for that sort of price at TSS tomorrow.

Thats a good point,
maybe use some fabric/carpet glue so they stay in place in the bag?

:woohoo: Squeezing the slider with a pair of pliers has fixed the zip on my old bag.

While that solves my immediate problem I'd still be keen to hear if anyone has picked up a new tank bag for less than $100 recently.

I got a cheap wee one a while back a Joe Rocket one off ebay,
for like $30,
not quite big enough to hold a visor though, good for the odd stuff or your lunch haha

My oxford 18 litre tank bag was only $89 dollars, works fine.

I hadn't thought about ebay. There are a few options on there for less than NZ$50 shipped that look like they might do the job.

When did you buy it? They seem to be $110 these days.

Only about 6 months ago. They have them on sale every now and then.

I don't use my Oxford one much, so it's in pretty much "as new" condition.

(Never really liked the idea of grit getting between bag and tank-paint. Nor moving it to get at petrol cap.)

If you might be interested, let me know. I forget what I paid for it.
