I hope the all blacks win because ...
If they win we'll have to put up with a couple of months of back slapping, and generally wanking on about it, but if they lose then we'll have to put up with another 4 years of wanking on about it until the next one. So a win will mean they'll fuck off from the news sooner. Other than that, I couldn't give a toss about it.

I saw a wonderful piece of investigative journalism on tv3s coverage of the crowds gathering in downtown Auckland this afternoon. Live feed to reporter Tony... (somethingorother) standing there with the microphone and he approaches a couple dressed head to toe in South African rugby gear carrying a giant South African flag.... he asks them ".... and where are you from"

After not having much to do with Rugger for a few years now I am finding the RWC bloody exciting. Great to see so many behind it, fantastic. The tall poppy syndromers will crawl out from under their rocks of course, but who cares. Go the mighty ABS.

Also big ups to Tonga who played bloody class footy last night. Stuck to their strengths and their gameplan and really gave the ABs a fright. I think that some of the other teams will be watching Tonga a bit more closely now. Good on you Tonga, just don't do anything stupid.

Who said SBW can't play???

(Oh goodness it's so funny seeing the "I hate Union" people come out any time there's a thread on the All Blacks or the RWC or whatever. Do sprot bike riders keep jumping into threads in the "Hogs and other cruisers" section to keep writing "your bikes all suck", or threads in the "Wannabe & Newbie Bikers" section to write "you're all losers"? Geez, how about just not posting, if you really don't care? Oh the joy of the Internet and the "freeeeedom!11!11!! I can post what I want where I want and you can't stop me na na na na naaaa na" attitude. Vandals. No better (mentally) than drop kicks who would key your bike out spite. Reminds me of hipsters (or any other trend de jour) - people so desperate to prove they are not one of the sheep, they simply become a different kind of sheep. Whatever.)

I enjoyed the game. Plenty of good skills shown, among the screw-ups. It would have been bad for the team for the first game to have been a walk-over; instead they got a little wake up, getting a good hard "practice" (half the point of pool games, for the top teams) for the later more difficult games. I'm looking forward to a good few more games...

I take back all the shit I've put on Moneybill,,,,,, most of it anyway.
I believe the AB's backed off to avoid injury in the second half,,after all they weren't going to lose from there an there's no point in showing anymore than you have to.

I guess I'm a sheeple cos I also enjoy watching the games. I don't really like crowds of people so don't go to the games and would have hated to have been anywhere in Auckland last night. I have friends who mock people for supporting the RWC but they all seem to be the type who don't like stuff just for the sake of being different. If anything's popular, they hate it. Meh, they can like or dislike whatever they like. I just tell them to not impose their views on others

Man I'm so sick of these sad cunts that bitch and moan about the rugby

This world cup is one of the best things that has happened to nz, a way to showcase our pretty little country to the world

Most of them are 'bad ass' bikers showing us how much of a 'biker' they are by not liking a popular sport, or something that doesn't involve a motorcycle.
Sure I don't particularly love rugby but will get behind the All Blacks and enjoy watching it if it is with a bunch of friends that are really into it!

Why not celebrate something that we are very good at on the international stage?

Fuck you lot are easily pleased

The first and only upset in a string of boring and predictable games. Granted it was a tense encounter and a close contest. Hardly a spectacle though....5 penalty kicks to 2 penalty kicks - and they were only the infringements they actually scored from.

That's your sixth post in this thread. You're not doing a very good job of not caring.

Clearly you don't like the sport - but I've definitely found most of the games very enjoyable to watch. Why do you you feel this obsessive need to shit on everyone? (You may think it's the other people who are sheep - but you are saying "baa" just like anyone you might criticise).

That may have been the first upset, but lots of games have come close. The rugby fans have also appreciated the efforts of teams that didn't win, but showed guts etc. and improvement over previous years. It's been a good tournament so far.

(By the way, one of the Irish scores wasn't a penalty - do you understand this game you don't like but need to post so much about?)

Yep enjoyable game. Like most kiwis, I was Irish last night (after being Fijian for the day:)). You can never count out the Aussies and it wasn't until the 78th minute that I felt I could celebrate. Also great to see the Wallabies hopes crushed by a Cooper fuck up, just a shame the irish winger didn't have the legs to finish it off.

The added bonus is that barring no more major upsets, Aus will be facing SA in the quarter final sending home one of our biggest rivals.

Great RWC so far, loving all the rugby non-stop every weekend!

Ohh also great game from the Warriors last night too. Two edge of my seat in the last 5 min matches in one night! Awesome stuff.

Aussie/SA and the All Blacks all look woefull when you get them rattled, and it does not take much. All three teams think they are above everyone else and cant beleive whats happening when another ''lesser'' team take it to them...

But Ireland's win now means we will only face one of them instead of both. An Arg,Aus,SA finals run now becomes Arg,SA/Aus, Best Nthn Hemi team. I picked Ireland, England, SA and AB's to win.
Lucky I got one right!!

Cruden looked good.

Conrad Smith needs a knighthood, that dude is LEGEND.

I reckon we have a good chance against the Wallabies. Especially if our back three are Jane, Kahui and Dagg. Smith and Nonu in the centre, Cruden at 10, Piri at 9, cowan and SBW off the bench.
Powerful attacking weapons and the defence is pretty good too.

Forwards are a mystery to me!

Naaa. That was a good wake up call for the ABs .. and who knows who Henry's Number One team actually is ...

And they played a bit experimental against Argentina ... had forwards running in the backs off line outs ... mixing the play up a bit ... They only had to win the game and they did that - they did not have to win convincingly (but they did that too)

I think it was another bit of a run out to see what happens .. Next game will be the crunch ... If they get passed Auzzie then it's either France or Wales in the final ...

Forwards are playing pretty good, no worries there, leave them alone although MCcaw hasn't got 80 minutes in him and probly won't have for the duration of the cup. Aussie played a blinder final bledisloe game against the kiwis, but haven't played anywhere near that mark since.Sure all blacks been up and down, but against south africa aussie did enough to win, which is all required by each team in knock out stage.

I hate the fact we can't seem to change game plan when it goes to shit, first and formost get the forwards dominating up front, may take 15-20mins,then give the backs the ball, committ the opposition forwards to allow the gaps out wide, and LEAVE SBW on the friggin bench.

Yes we can win the cup,but we have to play sensible maybe so called boring rugby, keep it tight, kick the goals, and that means taking any drop kick opportunity when arises, not just in last 10 mins when 1-2 points downand shitloads of pressure,do it early on,build the points gap, sounds simple and is completely simple.

Against that is our fear of taking 3 point by drop goals early on,hell when the team sees the TAB odds for first scoring play by all blacks and drop goal is $20 why don't they get friends and family to plunge be and do it lol.

Wales lost because their goal kicking was rubbish. France didn't deserve to win but with goal kicking like that Wales let themselves down badly! They should have got at least two of the three they missed but the kickers were impatient and didn't take the time they should have to settle themselves.

16th October 2011, 08:20
Wales lost because rugby union is a farce. That send off wouldn't have happened in any other code - League, Aussie Rules etc. The Warburton tackle would have been put on report or given 10 mins at worst. The game was wrecked in the 18th minute - and again these incidents are typical in Union which is a structureless mess of a game at the best of times. It doesn't take much to fuck up a sport that is a shambles in the first place. $1500 down the pan for a night in the drizzle.

Sad for Wales and for spectators who might have seen a pretty interesting contest if not for crap adjudicating. The Welsh team have stood out in what has been a pretty dull competition overall.

However (as an All Black hater), I think that France going through is probably the best result: - The All Blacks and NZers in general have created a mythology around France that they buy into time and again much to my delight. IF and it's a very big IF the All Blacks get past Australia, they will probably hex themselves yet again. France on the other hand can think on their feet, do what is required in the moment, and they never seem to get overawed or buy into bullshit about the "invinceability" of the All Blacks.

In pool play France cleverly threw the game fielding a B team against the All Blacks - giving the ABS a shallow victory. Last night once again France gave nothing away (typically doing the minimum required for the result). They took points when offered, kicked into the corners, withdrew key forwards as early as possible. They didn't show their hand and remained injury free.

On a different note - Australia Vs France final anyone :corn:

Yea na Short circuit, everyone was warned that any lifting tackles would be punished severely well before the tournament began. You are right it was harsh and the wrong decision to send him off. Rugby a farce?? yeah why not, its just a game, bloody good game, but just a game that people PLAY, and dress up in silly costumes to watch and have a great time. Saying its worse or sillier than any other sport is not comparing apples with apples, it is what it is.
Actually I am a bit over a lot of the rugby haters, sure its fun to have a laugh, but some are just so bitter and twisted I wonder where the hate comes from. Its not just that they like another sport, it goes way deeper than that and it would be interesting to find out what really drives their hatred.

Yeah. When the Warriors lost the final, did the "Union people" post "warriors are chokers" threads everywhere? Most of what I saw, was "Union people" appreciating that game for what it was and that team for who they are.

The motives driving the "Union haters" ... maybe a good psychology thesis to be written.

France if on the back foot can use niggly tactics, stuffing out the flowing game, thus becomes kick fest, all of a sudden you go from 12 points in front to 2 and frogs are dominant and dangerous, best thing is we secure the ball early and win it in forward play, which hopefully will happen.

While the media and the fans might be writing France off and predicting a comfortable win, I reckon the AB's have learnt enough over previous world cups that there is still a tough 80 minutes to go. Once the whistle goes to start the game, either team can win it.

I am damn sure the AB's won't be counting this as a win, they will be preparing hard from now on, focus on the game ahead, forget the rest.

They did deserve a bit of time to blow off steam, celebrate the win against AUS, remember that AUS is no 2 in the world I think. Now with that out of their system it will be heads down, bums up and on to the FINAL

Agree 100%. They really made a fucken meal of that. It's amazing how they play at the same level as their opposition. Where was the team from last week? I wouldn't have even called that the B team

AB's may not have been best team on the day, but were best team of the tournament (and for most of the preceeding four years or more). That was a real nail biter, but in the end they deserved the win as much as anyone. Phew.

...the score... 8-7...

No wonder I couldn't find the game on any of the 'adult' channels...
I'd been told coverage would be not screened on the standard channels because 15 French arseholes being hammered for 80 minutes wasn't suitable on free-to-air. But the hammering didn't happen.

Can anyone confirm the rumour that Piri has been returned to the factory for re-booting?

should be called......... THE GREAT RUGBY WORLD CUP SWINDLE.......although i am gratefull the ABs scummied a win coz New Zealand would have imploded with analytical what if and maybes had they lost, the game itself was an utter let down IMHO.
I ran a stopwatch over the game...........the ball was in play for 18 minutes in the first half.........20 minutes the second half...........nothing like an 80 minute epic battle as hype would have us believe..........smoke and mirrors............

So you don't like injecting overseas money into the economy or the 10's of thousands of tourists taking great impressions of NZ around the world or just the plain sense of fun about the place over the last few weeks? Sad bugger....

What game where you watching. Two teams giving it their all, edge of the seat stuff the whole game. Either team could have won it.

That is what a final should be all about. I am just stoked we came out on the right side of the score sheet.

Awesome final!

I was pretty surprised at the level of support for the whole event that occurred throughout New Zealand. It would have to be the first thing that has had such a unifying effect since god knows when. I even found myself a little swept up in it all.

My main memory of rugby in my own life was of, as a prop, reaching through the scrum to find an opposition team member's ear, and instantly grabbing said ear and screwing the fuck out of it. I'll never forget him screaming "NO SCREWING EARS! NO SCREWING EARS!"

I still giggle about that when the demons get loose...

What do you consider out of play?

Personally I like the "chess" aspect of rugby. Watching the scrums set and reset is something I enjoy a lot (ex prop). Its all goodand it has to stop occaisionally otherwise no one would last 80 minutes. I don't wanna go the rugby vs league route, but most of the players aren't involved much of the time at all, just running back and forth like a 13 man back line.

I like what Richie said post match. "We didn't play very well, but we played well enough"

Fantastic 6 week break for all of us, back to life now.

So you don't like injecting overseas money into the economy ...
That is debateable for some business people out there. I have had many discussions where retailers have had their weekly takings DOWN by 30-45% over the time of this event. Some are wondering how they will stay in business and others are wondering what will happen now this game is all over.
The much vaunted "party central" area at the bottom of Auckland was absolutely dead on the days when a game was not being played.

If people have somehow not spent up large (obviously not bought tickets to a game...) then they have christmas shopping and the silly-season approaching at full speed.

Apparently he went down during kicking warmup before the game and was laid out on the field for 10 mins receiving treatment. Good on him for getting back up for the game. I can't imagine how hard it would be preparing for a pivotal role in the most important game of NZ Rugby history, only to pick up an injury minutes before the match.

Yep, I know what you mean, with Wellington Cuba Street businesses not seeing the expected influx, with most folks hitting Courtney Place etc instead. Contrast that with my better half being rushed off her feet out in lil' ol' Martinborough. But regardless, even if you didn't see the $$$ directly, it all goes into the economic blender and is eventually re-distrubuted by the businesses who gained. You can't make all of the people happy all of the time and overall an influx of tourism and export of good experiences (from my missus experience 99% of tourists were having a great time) has to be a good thing.
