I took the end off the DRZ exhaust & his is what I found. I'm not sure what it's supposed to look like.

Is there any way of repacking this? i've not repacked an exhaust before.

2T and some straight-through race 4T pipes have it.

That bit there is the outlet - in will fit inside a core or chamber. Chances are the chamber has perforated holes in it and packing. Nothing to pack on the piece in the picture. If you want it louder :innocent: drill out the rivets holding the bent over piece on the inlet end and remove that piece of metal.

Whats left inside the pipe Padders? Just a big whole of nothing or some pipework coming out of another chamber and stuff, got a pic?

That's the spark arrestor. If it's a straight through system it will have packing,if it has baffles then no packing....then again maybe as some baffled systems still use a packed chamber.

why would you want to repack a muffler on a 4 stroke?

it took 20000km on the klr for the packing to disintegrate and give a fine mellow bark - kind of like ageing a fine wine :woohoo:

- kind of like ageing a fine wine :woohoo:

And having it turn into vinegar...

Really sharp, bitey vinegar that makes you screw your face up.

Then someone will come along and go "I quite like that..."

I'll try to take a pic up my back passage. It's pretty dark up there. When I looked all I could see was some fish scaled like covering around the outside of the can. I don't think there was another skin if you know what I mean.

I want to quieten it down so thought maybe wrapping packing around that insert may work.

I will prob rejet back to stock as my mech warned I may be gettting major bore wash i'm using so much fuel for so little mileage.

Getting an idea of whether there's just a big full length empty hole right down to the far end of the pipe vrs the pipe being chambered and having smaller pipes coming through from the previous chamber should give an idea about whether that section was supposed to be packed or not.

What pipe has Topo just pulled off his DRZ to put the carbon fibre jobbie on?

What pipe has Topo just pulled off his DRZ to put the carbon fibre jobbie on?

I'm gona keep the standard pipe for adv duty (can't stand loud pipes for more than a few hours), but padmei your welcome to try my standard end cap to confirm that the rest of yours is ok while i'm over at safari, the only real (practical) difference to your butcher'd one is it has a 20-25mm cap in the end of it. would be easy enough to make a restrictor to bolt into your pipe to do the same job.

I also have a few main jet's that should get you in the ballpark, i've currently got a 155 in with the std pipe and will run a 160 0r 162 with the open carbon one, i've also just done the "eddie mod" and set it up propperly if you want a hand. It seems to work really well but am waiting on a new float bowl gasket before giving it a propper test run.

Cheers
Topo

I put an Aftermarket pipe on my 2000 model Drz400 from new to make it quieter. They were loud stock.

That's a non O-ring chain there Padders, fine for offroad but don't tend to last long.
If you need a hand fitting, let me know, should take no more than 15 mins (or so!)

The CZ stuff on trademe seems to be good value, I was lining one up but the LBD knocked 10% off a DID so there was only $6 in it.

I tend to do lots of muddy rides and quality is the only defense there. It might be less painful to buy & throw away cheap stuff more often, but they tend to cost more in the long run.

I'm seeing how an $80 EK chain lasts on the DR...

Sweet after 1 month and 500km so far.

500km in 1 month  That's got to be a record...

Pre TT350 it was 2,000km per month...

I am reviving this old thread because I didn't want to start a fresh one for what is effectively the same subject.

Anyway, I have a glass pack Nojima race muffler on my 1300, it's sounds horrny, also looks the 'bidness' on the end of the 4-1 full titanium headers. The problem is that I ride the bike every single day and the 'droning' that occurs when cruising at 3000RPM has been driving me insane! Literally it's chewing out my ear holes with its brain aching dronyness! Also when cruising next to cages with their windows open, I notice that they promptly wind that shit up to escape the droning mess

Anyway, I looked into re-packing kits and the price looked to be in the $200-$300 range for the big can on the XJR, effectively I'd need 3-4 FMF dirt bike kits to do the job once :shit:

So more research had me looking at Pink batts and other insulation wool, however I had serious doubts that this crap would stay put or put up with the punishment that the big 4 is going to be putting on it. What I did find was 'Rockwool', it is insulation wool but it's spun from basalt rock and is stable to 1000Degrees C apparently, perfect! I managed to get a brick of Rockwool from 'Switched on gardner' (they use it as a grow medium), the brick can be cut to size and you can easily 'de-laminate' it to make manageable sheets the same length as the can. I drilled the rivets on the can and sure enough, after 30,000Km the old packing was fucking shot! Burnt and gutted, stuff all left.
After an hour of wrapping and wiring up the Rockwool onto the perforated core pipe, I man handled the furry sausage back into the can, riveted it up and went for a burn.

Shit what a difference, 1000% improvement, sounds a lot nicer, not a shit load quieter, but no droning and less baqckfiring on the over run.

Much recommended, one brick of Rockwool cost $25 and will do 3 full re-packs on a big 1300cc carbon muffler :Punk: :wings:

Cheap tricks: from cheap to cheapest...

1/ I would suggest you buy some of that header wrap, unravel it and shove it into the cavity.

2/ Buy some 'woven roving' from a fibreglass place and use that.

3/ Buy some chopped strand fibreglass from same.

I have used all of the above and they DO work !
